@@realappalachia I believe the only exception to this rule Melody is a mini-series based on three books written by the same author. The mini-series, "North and South" was written by John Jakes and tells the story of two families before and during the Civil War. There is NO way that all of the characters and events in the three books could have been included in the mini-series. The books were very complex and one had to be a Civil War buff to really understand the scenes. The mini-series made it easier.

I never heard of her book “the glass castle” I found it at a home we bought to remodel, I put it in the goodwill box until my daughter said mom that is a good book you should read it. So I’m reading it now. I was abused as a kid and she’s my age so I can relate to so much of her book. Thanks for showing a small part of the book and making it real. ❤️💙

The only problem with Gypsy parents is that they are only capable of two things. Ultimate victory or catastrophic failure. Usually in a "rinse and repeat" never ending family and soul destroying cycle. The only ones who were "lucky" are those who become strong enough to get the hell away from it!

Thx so much for showing us that area and Hobart street and the grandmas street I love this book so much, read it 2007 the first time and always wondered how everything would have been looked :) I think if I remember correctly, the grandmas house burned down after her death in the 70s, because uncle standley fell as sleep with a cigarette lit on … The grandfather and uncle standley then moved in to a flat where drug lords pained stuff on their walls and no one ever repainted …. When Jeannette and her family moved to Welch, Loris age 13 was mentioned when she got in a fight with Erma , it was also said said that Lori was already a teenager and Jeannette and Brian would be too soon . Jeannette also went in grade 5 in maybe remember … She must be around 11 or 12 when they moved there. Lori is one or two years older Jeannette was still ten In Phoenix and then they stayed there for a while when the father tried to get sober … :)) thx so much :)

Thanks for all y’all’s videos I really enjoy watching them they bring back memories of growing up in McDowell county Riding all those country roads and working in Welch at the Budweiser place there and started working atHeilig-Meyers, in Keystone It was a great place to grow up back then. I've never heard of the book or the movie, but I watched this because it's you guys.🙂 Wow, I can't believe that Court Street (around the 2 minute mark I think), where it runs on the side of the mountain. I can't believe how narrow it was, before you bore right at the fork, and went down from there. That looked scary even for me. Beautiful scenery in this video, and I learned a lot about that movie. Shane and Melody, I am very impressed with your videos. My family lives in Cabell County, WV. I have been infatuated with Appalachia since the late 70s and now am looking to pursue a PhD in Appalachian Studies. If you two aren’t teachers then you have missed your calling. To me, Appalachia is like going home. It’s Waltons Mountain, it’s Mayberry and yes it’s the Hatfields and McCoys. The people, their history and the future of the people and Appalachia itself is why I want to teach in Appalachia and about this land that is quintessentially America. The plight of the people and how to improve their lives is as difficult a fix as finding peace in the Middle East. Why our politicians do not do more to improve the lives of the people that for decades help this country work. Anyway, I look forward to your shows. Did I read that you have a podcast or another show as well? If so please send me the info. Thanks again for this treat that everyone should see.

@@davebryant8050 David, you are preaching to the choir my brother. To me the issue of the “generational poor” is heartbreaking. The industries are gone and there is absolutely no reason for any corporation to move into most parts of Appalachia. Not that there wouldn’t be a work force readily available but there is nothing to offer. Schools, communication, infrastructure, or anything approaching a sustainable way of life that a company could offer an employee is nonexistent. I do see in the people of Appalachia a hope for a better life, a fight to want to make things better. This issue reminds me of the indigenous peoples and the same plight, infrastructure and even running water into their homes is promised but not ever delivered. Then there is also the medical issue or I should say lack of available medical facilities or even a Doctor in many areas of this proud land. I keep reading about how West Virginia is taking the land back from the Devastation of Mountain Top removal mining and “repairing” what was destroyed. Well there is a lot to do. I will continue to follow, like and share because you have a lot to show us and a lot to say. Regards

I’m from Welch and my sister went to school with Jeanette and I went to school with some of her younger siblings. It was quite a thrill to see a thanks to my sister in the movie as she helped with a few props. The movie was good but I wasn’t thrilled with the way our town was portrayed, but that’s movies for you!

This is so cool that you and your siblings know Jeannette and her siblings … Your town is very beautiful… I guess the memoir emphasized an economic change in the book / movie … it seems to me, that Welch or the area was Beeing in some sort of recession while Jeannette was living there and everything was a bit runned down, also she may be around family members who struggled financially so she may never noticed the nice areas :)) (I’m from Germany, I have no idea of your town, I just read the book / saw the movie and that’s may impression why it could be portrayed the way it was by the author)

Al that sand stone work is amazing. I live in Bellaire Ohio, We are Appalachia here. We have a huge sandstone rail road bridge here with tons of history. The stone part has been bought by a local group to preserve and that they did with a walking trail on atop and platform at the end where it would connect to a still active line so you can take pictures. They even lit it so at night the solar panel run led lights turn on and show it's beauty until the batteries run dead nightly. It's beaitiful and there is a ton of old sand stone work in this area. Italy certainly gave us some great masons

I had an aunt who lived on Hobart Street for many years. She passed away in 2020. She may have known these people. I think locals pronounce it more like Hobert Street. I could be wrong about that.

😂 the roads right. Sketchy to say the least. I was there a couple of weeks ago and the roads on the side of the mountain made me nervous. I can’t imagine winter time there it’s gotta be dangerous. I appreciate your alls videos they are fun and informative. Be safe out there! Especially in those areas. One question I have is when you were there did you feel welcome? I had two cars beep at me from behind and I wasn’t going that slow. Just curious it left me with mixed emotions about whether the people are in general nice to outsiders or not.

Yes the winter would be especially nerve wracking! We did feel welcome in Welch this visit! I think they’ve really gotten used to outsiders with all the ATV tourists now. - Melody

Watched twice. Did you ever find 93 Hobart Street? Edit: Have a neighbor who grew up on Hobart Street and walked to school with the oldest girl. Her husband showed her your YT video and she pinpointed where their house was. At 9:17, 9:18 on the downhill side in those woods is where their place was down a path. She said it was a pretty rough shack. She also said the kids went to school clean and with clean clothes.
