Iarla Ó Lionáird gives some background to Casadh an tSúgáin / The Twisting of the Hayrope.
"One of my favorite songs from the folk world in the 1970s is Micheal O Domhnaill’s rendition of Casadh an tSúgáin. Paradoxically I never really sang it myself until quite recently - although Micheál was the first person to record me in a studio (Trend studios, in Dublin) many years ago.
Casadh an tSúgain / TheTwisting of The Hayrope is a whimsical love story told in the usual shy and playful manner that characterizes many Irish folksongs when approaching the subject of love. Boy meets girl, calls around to her house only to be met by her rather protective mother who cleverly asks him to twist a hayrope (which by the way were used for many a thing in 19th-century Ireland, though usually to fashion a seat for chairs- hence the phrase Súgan Chair).
In his efforts to cooperate with the girl's mother, the young suitor compliantly twists the hayrope but in doing so finds that as it lengthens he is once again outside the door whereupon it is summarily shut in his face by the ever expedient matriarch."

My grandparents raised me. My parents had to work hard, and they did good by doing it. I'm a Newfoundlander, and most of us are Irish - including myself. My grandfather used to sing this to me to put me to sleep. Only because of him do I know every word of this by heart. His father was taught by his grandfather, and in return, his great-grandfather taught his grandfather who taught his father who then taught his son. Many memories of going to Mass Sunday mornings after falling asleep to this tune. Indeed I had him sing it to me a week before he died - when I was thirteen. On his deathbed, myself and my mother sang it to him in return. This was his favourite song along with " Fiddler's Green "

As a basque, this song breaks my heart every time. The pain of having to leave your homeland behind is one hard to describe, and so many of my people had to flee the country because they were getting imprisoned and masacred for simply existing. They banned our language, our culture, our history... It hurts to think so many left this beautiful green land never to return, and it hurts even more to think it wasn't that long ago. Words can't describe how emotional and warming this song is. This has become one of my favourite pieces to listen to. Described by many that the girl most likely a personification of Ireland a deep story of home sickness. Featured in my favourite film Brooklyn. I am homesick for Ireland and I am not Irish. I miss Ireland. I only went to West Cork for 1 week last year and I miss Ireland so much. When I took the coach from Schull to Cork City for my flight I cried most of the way back to Cork City for leaving this place and it stole my heart. I have since learnt to sing this song from phonetics and an Irish friend said I did a good job with it, I know I make mistakes but I am trying to learn better ways to sing this song.

As I listen to this wonderful song from County Cork here in Wales, where I have lived since 1960, I feel that I have to thank the policy of the Irish governments during my schooldays (1944 - 1956) who made Irish compulsory during all those years. Yes indeed, they forced it down my throat and I hated it then. My husband is scottish with Irish ancestry (specifically what we call now Northern Ireland) and this touches my heart. It’s a shame that the English tried to destroy both cultures when they are unique all over the world.
