Fun fact, the plastic cap ("pommel") hides a roughly 1,5 inch steel sleeve inside the grip, grab a stick and there you go, you have a spear. Hide some small nails in the grip to secure the stick to the knife by hammering the nails through the holes just below the pommel. I use the Glock knife for "rough" things, as a secondary knife. Greetings from Austria :)

Agreed, as a secondary knife. I used mine as a light, easy in, and easy out-one hand operated utility knife. These would never be my first choice for an all around survival blade but it makes one good easy access utility knife..

I ground down 4 teeth at the guard for a striker steel, and a great reverse grip finger over guard hold for hard close cutting. I also ground a groove at the top of the false edge for a fire pot handle grabber. One of these hangs at the side of my off grid kitchen. I also reprofile a 17° edge for better cutting!

I agree with you on this knife being in the category of a truck knife or in a motorcycle saddle bag. I chose the SRKs. One’s in my Jeep 24-7 The other in a saddlebag on my bike. Stay safe

I would lean toward the SRK or SRK-C for sure.

Years ago, I had one of the original glock knives. It was "lost" when my belongings were being transferred to a new car (by the dealer's employees) and never recovered. It was a KNIFE, not a saw or multitool. I would buy another if I could find one with a straight spine. It should be noted, however, that the "saw" is intended to be used as a roof saw for digging fox holes. They were somewhat popular in South East Asia.

Thanks for that fair review. I agree about having this as a backup knife. I would get it at that price. I always carry 3 different types of knives with me when I’m in the bush, at that size I wouldn’t have a problem with packing that Clock with me.

The sawback is not for cutting, it cuts only forward and his task is to create a larger wound when you stab , it has some friction when you go through the flesh, but no resistance when you pull out. For bushcraft/ survival tasks i'd choose the 78, for sd and combat the 81 model with the sawback

The discontinued Glock 78 without the root saw back is better, if you can find one at a decent price, it's better as a fighting tool, than the Glock 81 saw-back. They are one of the most indestructible survival knives you can get.

The FM78 is not discontinued. Where do people get this from. I read it more often. Maybe in the USA? Not in Europe. Plenty of websites selling it. And Glock Company confirmed it is in production. Only in black.

Great honest assessment. I like the military style knives as general purpose / deer hunting use. By the way the cost is great! That price is a bottle of whisky in New Zealand 🇳🇿! I will take the knife over a bottle of whiskey! Go well Dave

5160. It's the only no brainer steel in existence. Even subpar manufactured products made out of that will do you justice. My fav steel. Not the best steel, but a complete no brainer

As for that admitedly bullshit handle symmetry, all one need do is grind the flanks flat. Slowly, mindfully, deliberately, judiciously flatten the two sides of the handle. It becomes a whole new knife, with just a modest investment in modification & personalization.

Best knife ever made, imo and proves 98% of knives are a rip off. And I've had everything! Ps, your right the handle isnt perfect, but it also is - do you know why KABAR, Glock and many others have round handles? It was done for a reason following WWI. Think about it.

Worst knife I have ever used. Had it for 7 years, in the army. Can't keep an edge and rusts constantly. Using this as a survival knife, is for people who don't want to survive.

Im not surprised that it cant cut it for military use. Steel choice is just off for that. I have it for throwing and it is a dream, the weight is just right and it's pretty much indestructible. But I wouldn't want to take it out with me as my only knife.

The reason one calls it a "survival knife" is it is supposed to be part of the the go-ready, bug-out bag kit whatevr, it's not supposed to be used on a normal basis , it must be packed away and forgotten about int he bug out system one has , which itself is checked at least annually. So that when you really do need it, it will be fresh off the shelf, sharp as fuck, still good. Oneuat keep other lnobes for 9ther functions or daily use, but teh concept survival tools is taht regardless of anything if one has a survival kit, it include sclknife which youight need for various reasons in tejcas etaht you don't have the other sthat you keep. So, one does not have to pay 10k for a whatever, taht way if it gets lost of broken or stolen it's not taht bad seeing as it saved your life in the lprocess, or aided in it. It has psychological benefits. Now, if one wants to use it everyday ithink for normal camping and hunting it's good to have, and will last, but them you MUST keep a "survival knife" in your survival kit, one which you don't use everyday
