I ran into Kelly at a sushi restaurant in Santa Barbara once. It was his birthday. I bought a saki for him and we raised our cups together in celebration. Afterwards, he graciously stopped to thank me on his way out and shook my hand. It was one of the most memorable days of my life as a lifelong surfer and fan of Kelly's. Here's to you, Kelly. You are the greatest of all time and a goddamned gentlemen.

I have found his genuine emotion over the last couple of years to be really heartwarming and pretty amazing. His Pipe win in 2022 was it. The cut is making it hard for all the best young guys also. Guys that are in their prime. Medina , Italo , new guys right off challenger series etc. It’s really not conducive to for someone on tour to get into a “rhythm” which could take 4 events sometimes. And only top 5 get into final ?? Horrible.
