So to answer the walkie-talkie issue of static in the cabin, they're picking up interference caused by the close proximity that they are to one another. My family used walkie-talkies all the time during my childhood so I could go play video games in the electronics section when they used to have playable games on display. I don't know what was going on with static and howl coming through when they were in the forest though.
