Same man. Currently sitting with a heating pad on my back wishing I had something like this :(
@JSGilbert
@JSGilbert 3 жыл бұрын
I may be considered one of their original “test subjects”. I suffer from chronic pain and a condition called spinal stenosis. About 7 years ago (I think), it was almost impossible for me to sit and work for more than 20 minutes at a time. I live in San Francisco and happened upon these guys, who had a tiny showroom in a work share building. I tried it out and it seemed that it could work for me. While there are many, many things I don’t like about it, including the undersized, wobbly desk, I can safely say that it has allowed me the ability to work for hours at a time doing audio and video editing, writing, Zoom meetings, etc. I do not believe my productivity would be 25% of what is has been, if I didn’t own this desk. Additionally, I had a support issue recently and they took care of it almost immediately. When I say “test subject”, I simply refer to my being an early adopter. I have been given no compensation of any kind, and I paid the full retail price. Although, I believe that was closer to $5,000, when I bought it. I think it’s funny that much of their marketing has been “hipster” based; as in to companies looking to attract high end talent by offering the chair as a perk. If this were looked at more as a medical device, perhaps in conjunction with insurance coverage, I think they’d be hitting the nail on the head. The younger, healthier me would have zero interest in this product. But the rickety, broken me, couldn’t appreciate it more.

Being on your webcam like that reminds me of a client I met with once. His company builds sensors for commercial robotics applications and he actually set up a full size commercial robotic arm in his office with one of their sensors and a webcam on the end and programmed it to track him around his office when he makes calls. It also has a mechanical gripper on the end so he can push a button and the arm will swing around and pour him a drink from the bar and then set it on his desk. The only caveat is all the bottles have to be open ahead of time.

What I did is I purchased a hospital bed tray that the table that lifts tilts and locks. Reversed the wheel assembly so they face outward and attached some weights to the end of the wheel support frame to prevent tilting attached a 1 x 1 x 1/8 x 6" lg aluminum angle to the table, so my laptop won't slide off, laid on my recliner and rolled over the hospital bed tray with my laptop on it then adjusted the height and tilt. I have a flat pillow on my lap with a thin hard cover book for my mouse pad. There I have it my version of $8,000.00 altwork station. Lazy boy recliner and hospital bed tray. For home use.

@@RsKnDR0991 I'm 90% sure it was due to just being a little too careless in my previous physical labor job. Picking up things that were a bit too heavy, and lifting with too much back bending and not enough legs/hips. It got progressively more painful for a while but I ignored it until one day I basically couldn't even roll over in bed. One MRI of the lumbar spine later, 4 slipped discs and a slightly fractured vertebrae. I was 20 years old at the time. Got a follow-up MRI about 2 years later and a 5th one had bulged as well. Not a fun time, would not recommend haha. It still hurts all the time but I've managed to adapt my life to it and get used to it, for the most part :)

I wonder if someone could mod this to be a flight simulator. Changing out the hydraulics to be more responsive and sturdy and programming it to follow a joystick. One thing I am curious about is the monitor mount. Four screws are good for a standard adjustable mount, but long periods of time holding it above your head could wear it out, no?
@TheHy6xD
@TheHy6xD 3 жыл бұрын
It's sad that no one could test this with back pain in your team, I mean it's good no one has it, but being stuck with herniated disc it's been really hard to sit even 10 minutes on regular chair, so laying and working is the only alternative(assuming you don't fall asleep). About hands. I don't know why would they not add a feature to tilt desk at 75º so you hands could be straighten up. Also, trackpads are better than mouse in that case, because you can use trackpad using your finger, not moving your whole arm and when you remove your hand, it's just there, not falling like a mouse.

It didn't seem too bad in the lying down position and I'd probably have the keyboard and mouse in a lower position. It still looks good but there's some great information in this video for consideration such as it being wobbly.

This chair is made of some memory foam or something, the eames chair has beautiful hand carved wood, leather and an amazing support team. Plus you're also paying for the brand image of Herman Miller and especially the eames lounge chair which has appeared in many movies and shows. Also that focuses more on the reading and private library market and not necessarily on the productivity market. HM can charge people that kind of money given they have private libraries sometimes worth hundreds of thousands of dollars.

If when laying back you could put the mouse pad down by your side, and level, it would make using it waaay better. As would a split keyboard either side of your hips. And it all could have been remedied so easily. The key was was Linus saying it would have been a good thing if the seat could swivel. Simply skip the swing away monitor and table design, make the seat swivel in the upright position and you can have two uprights for the table and monitor making them much more stable. Just swivel the chair to sit down or getting up. It could be motorized just to make it have that luxury feeling. Add a couple of programmable choices for seat, table and monitor positioning and it would be more compact, more stable and probably not a whole lot more expensive to make.

I'm personally happy to see folks that are honest reviewers and not just sellin products cause pay offs. Right off the bat when I looked at that, it looked very uncomfortable. My father's Bariatric wheelchair wasn't very comfortable though and it was built for someone to almost live out of the chair. In fact, the cost of this one is almost same as his chair was. The biggest differences is that instead of mobility, letting him drive around at speed of light jogging, you got the computer parts that plug in and isn't meant to move. I'm bit curious as to the weight of this behemoth of chair. My father's was around 500lb without him in the seat and that thing looks like it's holding up almost as much metal and misc electronics as his chair did. Honestly, I think I could make something for 10th of the price easily and be just as comfortable, if not more so. Heck, if wanted comfy chair, I could just use my Lay-Z-boy recliner and have the armature mounted onto the side of it. That's far more comfy, an cheaper than that thing looks to be, plus has enough room on it for that scene with the kid :P (Bariatric size chair)

I'm an owner of an Altwork Signature Station and have used it daily since 2019. My most common positions are moderate degrees of recline with my legs stretched out. I set it up in such a way that it doesn't have the wobbliness problems shown in this review. Most important, I eliminated all that back-and-forth motion of the mouse with a stationary trackball placed on the left where it's not pressing down on the desk. It's been worth the price to be able to work several hours at a stretch without back or neck pain.

I somehow missed this video. I thought it was a new one. Being able to rotate the entire chair would negate the need to actually have such a huge turning circle for the desk as well, which is also a good bonus for size requirements for the room you'd need for it. Add in some shock and dampening systems on the arms to absorb all the wobbles and you are absolutely golden, you could use it in all positions. A trackball is an absolute must for this though. No mice need apply. Get out of here mice! Although that was a pretty good simple hack solution. The company could probably add something like that in to the documentation as an official recommendation, same with the keyboard idea for particularly heavy keyboards. Stronger magnets runs the risk of not getting the damn keyboard back off, or damage, which wouldn't be good.

I was one of the original backers of this and therefore got it for a lot less but have used it for years. It has been a remarkable item that has saved my back and allowed me to sit reclined for hours processing images w/o pain. In fact the only reason I need to get up is for bathroom breaks! If there is one negative it is that the cushions are a bit hard but they have recently allowed one to order some memory foam toppers - I have yet to get those and am using my own but those should fix that issue. I would suggest two things to the user: 1) Use a trackball and not a mouse if you are going to use it reclined - it is much more arm friendly. 2) Get a few larger magnets to stick to your keyboard bottom - cheap Amazon purchase. Customer service has been good and assembly is not all that bad unless you are a total mechanical moron.

Car seats have had adjustable lumbar support for a long time now, easily 40 years as has propper office chairs. Correctly adjusted a lumbar support is really comfortable, but a pillow on a string isn't the way to do it. So far I haven't seen a "gaming chair" that's as adjustable and ergonomic as the driver seat in a 30 year old Volvo. Kind of disappointing. Edit: Make that an almost 50 year old Volvo. The seat in my Volvo 145 from 1974 had adjustable lumbar support.

@@blahorgaslisk7763 I just wish there was anything decent in the 200 range to be honest. The sad fact is that as far as comfort the gaming chairs are the best you get until you break past the 200 dollar office chairs. Any of the sub 200 office chairs I have tried have been absolutely terrible. The sad truth is good office chairs like the herman miller tend to be massively overpriced. Pretty much I bought mine because at the time I couldn't find anything decent in the sub 200 range. Now my next purchase is likely going to be something better and I am even considering spending on a herman miller but sadly there just isn't anything good for the budget range which is why the gaming chairs do so well. Now we are starting to see some knock offs and Chinese ergo brands so I do think the prices will become more reasonable.

We need a sphere frame where anything mounted can swivel with you, in a seat, in the center. Perhaps a double sphere frame where the inner frame will swivel, turn, tilt; with you, and the outer frame will keep stationary electronics(speakers, desktop pc, etc.) stationary. one question I have: have you tried maybe setting the level of the desk again after you are in lying position, like setting in back up so its more or less parallel to the floor, maybe a bit of an increased angle. Like I see space to get it further down too, that seems like a way more comfortable position and it would elimate the fighting with gravity. could cause some problems if you go back in sitting position tho
