The toll booth where Sonny was killed is about 3 miles from my house and the house in Long Beach where they had the wedding and where Don Corleone dies in the tomato patch with his grandson is about 5 blocks from my house .

"Godfather" in the west symbolizes a person that will look after your family should you die - If I had kids and had a trusted brother (my childrens uncle), I could name him "godfather" and if he accepts, he will look after my potentially orphaned children.

In my family a Godfather and Godmother are chosen mainly for the reason listed by your producer but also to take over the parenting of a child whose parents have both tragically passed away. Naturally the rest of the family will step in and help. but the chosen Godparents will make final and most important decisions in raising the child.

Back in the day in history you weren't given a godparent but a godsibling somebody who acted like a brother or sister and took an interest in the child's spiritual upbringing - were they living a godly life, going to church etc etc. The godsiblings therefore had a reputation for sticking their nose into the business of others and over time the term "godsib" became "gossip"
