I heard an acting coach say once that an actor must find the character's spine. That motivation that is there throughout everything. She said Michael's spine in the three Godfather movies is the same. It's not power, it's not greed, it's not revenge. He is trying to make his father happy.

Al Pacino would argue that. He was not happy with Coppola's insistence that Michael feels remorse for Fredo's death. He said, in speaking to the spine of the character, that Michael thinks about decisions before making them and wouldn't feel guilt for any previous actions he's directly taken with regards to his criminal behavior. His remorse lies in the family who have been killed in his enemies' efforts to kill him.

I disagree. Michael does feel regret for killing Fredo, as he confesses, he killed his father's son, he killed his mother's son. It was a sin and there was no way past that.@@DarrenBaileyActor

I find it interesting that since Vito was more friendly and Michael was more direct and offputting that Vito was to die with his grandson, while Michael dies alone. Weirdly both fruit related

Anthony had decided to memorize a song to thank his father for supporting his music career... Song begins.. First half of a song speaks about man who is awake in the middle of the night. He can't fall asleep bc he wants his woman back... At that moment Michael is thinking about Kay. At that moment Apollonia is nowhere on his mind. " Kay, every night here in Sicily all I dream about is my wife and children and how I lost them. Don't dread me any more Kay I love you "... says Michael to Kay later in the movie. Only when the lyrics to a song said " What I thirst for love and she thirst for water " he remembered Apollonia. Thirsty for love means he needs sex Thirsty for water means YOUNG That is why he remembered her, he remembered a young girl who he married, who he had to marry since there is no sex before marriage in Sicily because he was thirsty for love. B. Terra is a proof Michael only had physical act of love with Apollonia. Conversation Michael had with his children wasn't emotional moment but attempt to convince Mary not to sleep with Vincent. Through a very next scene, scene with Altobelo and Vincent Coppola practically explains to people how Michael came into Apollonias house and conned her into marriage.....the way Vincent conned Altobelo. Coppola mocks people who think that was love....... Those who think it was are as " wise" as Altobelo. ... Apollonia was portrayed ( just like in a book and in gf1) as a child, physical act of aka sex, something wrong, shameful, a sin beyond redemption....... sin for which he payed. Someone killed his child just like he killed someone's child and Kay was gone like a dream she has always been...... that is explanation of the ending

GF3 wasn't too bad, but no where near as good as parts 1 and 2. Coppola should have made Part 3 around 1976 in order to tie in the first two parts more closely. However, he spent time on other ridiculous and stupid projects nearly bankrupting himself which forced him to make GF3 in 1990 when he needed the money - which was his only reason for him making the film.

It was not his idea to make GF 3 at all. He was approached by studio who sent him different scripts none of which had anything to do with Michael. He said that he won't do it unless they allow him to do it the way he ended up doing it.....it was greatest wish to do it that way. There is an interview where he perfectly explained it. Studios waited that long for GF 3 bc second one financially flopped. And by the way Michael in a third godfather is the Michael from the end of the second one

Great recap. I saw this several years ago and thought it stunk back then as I do now with the recap. GF3 takes away from the "God Father" mystique in my opinion and was, therefore, a waist of time.

The film was ruined in my eyes by very bad casting. Had they waited a few years, they could have cast Leonardo DiCaprio and maybe James Gandolfini in roles. Casting Sofia Coppola was a great mistake.
