The Golden Bowl is the most talked about and perhaps the oddest work of Henry James is his novel The Golden Bowl which was published in the year 1904. It has a very unconventional storyline with the theme of love, marriage, faithfulness and adultery. A reader may feel that he is actually reading a psychological thesis, a research work presented in the form of fiction, a novel.
Unlike other novels of Henry James, The Golden Bowl doesn’t have many characters, yet, with the minimal characters involved, Henry James succeeded in offering a high impact story of a doting father and his lovable daughter tangled in between the interrelationships of their respective spouses. It is a story in which a mindful and highly conscious newlywed girl not only saves her marriage but also the marriage of her father. Henry James depicted the mental struggle and conscious of each of the central character with such accuracy that this novel became one of his masterpieces. This novel was added to the List of 100 best novels of all times of The Guardian.
We will discuss a few short stories by Henry James and then we will move to discuss another major American writer and poet of the Victorian age, Mark Twain.
