Hi Gabriel, I have worked for structural and civil engineers for nearly 50 years. I have recently retired after many years of being in the building industry. Do you use welded beam and welded column sections in any portal frame that you have to design? How do you compensate for racking in the frame structure? A great structural engineer who is now deceased said to me many years ago to include ridge ties and column top ties between frames. Most other engineers just rely on purlins and girts to provide a form of bracing between frames. I always used CHS as tie members because they are good in tension and compression. I also use CHS as bracing sections in the end bays with a forked end plate connection. I included additional stiffeners at the column/rafter connection to make the column/rafter connection a lot stiffer. Do you have a preferred purlin and girt size? I usually use a C or Z 200 or 250 purlin section with 2 or 3 rows of bridging depending on the design parameters.

Hi Raymond, welded beams and columns are typically very heavy and expensive. I try to stick with UB's and UC's. Yes, I do exactly what you described, using struts and ties. I wouldn't rely on purlins and girts for large structures. Maybe for carport sheds. I also spec the stiffeners in the portal connections. The purlin and girts size are dependent on the span, wind loads etc.

Hi Dear, if there is steel frame, the top cord is rafter IPE and the bottom cord is RHS, shall we move the bottom cord - RHS- to lower level ? because in reality the IPE - top cord- is connected say by end plate with the column! and thus shall this be reflected on sap?? or shall we keep them as it is in sap - all are center to center- without shifting the bottom cord to down by move command

Great info mate. how would you go about designing a Barndominium that's 18M x 20M with seamless colorbond sheeting on roof and sides. Half of the building will need to be habitable and the other half will be a workshop/garage. I'm located according to your graph in A1 area South West australia.

Hi Martin, thanks for watching :) I would need more information to be able to guide you on this. I would engage a local structural engineer to help you out. You will need council approval for a habitable building anyway.

What's the reason behind the design that bolted connections of a column of a portal frame is located at 1/3H of column from top and bottom? Bolted connections of column is at two points of the column.

@@bengthebrazilianengineerinAus Thanks for the reply. This is about portal frames where the bottom part of the column is installed, while the upper part of the column with the rafter is jacked up to the required elevation. Then the middle segment of the column is to be spliced with bolted connections at the top and bottom ends of that segment. I assume the middle column segment is 1/3 column clear height of the structural steel column. What's the reason behind it, why is it the bolted connection is located at that two points?

can we just model the building as 2d frame, or is there any difference if we model it as 3d?
@bengthebrazilianengineerinAus
@bengthebrazilianengineerinAus 8 ай бұрын
yes you can analyze the portal frame with a 2D model. I find the 3D models good for bracing analysis, relative sway of portals etc. It considers all the stiffness. But yeah, 2D works as well.

I agree, I think some robot tutorials on how you input and explain the reactions against general topics such as this video would be really helpful. Typically you only see either videos on how to use the software or videos on general topics. Might be someone unique to try and combine them . Food for thought, but I would watch.
