The good and the ugly-ish - My Central Florida summer garden update! In this video I share what my Central Florida garden currently looks like in the heat of the summer, what has worked, what hasn't worked, and the adjustments I'm making. I also share tips on pruning younger mulberry trees, and how I apply free fertilizer to my fruiting trees. Watch me harvest a few peppers as well!

Great video. Just an advice on the papaya. Don’t remove the male papaya. Prune the tip of the tree. Sometimes, people confuse male with hermaphrodites. The perfect plant is the hermaphrodite.

Thank you so much! I'll be using the male papaya leaves in my cooking and will dry for teas. Appreciate you!

I put my peppers (sugar rush & avarski) into my landscaping too. You can cut them back and just cover when it freezes and then it comes back each year. I have one that’s four years old. Looks like a tree trunk! Your yard looks great

Nice, that's the right summer stuff here in 9b! Last year we had a luffa vine climb up our 2-story house and had a year's worth of sponges. Now we have Seminole pumpkin vines spreading around like crazy and I also planted some moringa and we harvest it like an herb and add to our stir fry and salads.
@freedomgrows

How wild, it climbed up your 2-story home?! My trellis is likely not large enough then 😄. I'd love to try moringa. I'll probably grow that next. Thanks for the tip!

Thank you for the great information. You can cut that pineapple top into 4 pieces and really grow your garden. It does take some patience and a sharp knife but totally worth it.

I used to be a neighbor (I was in Eustis for many years). Lol. I have moved up to 9a, so it's a little challenging with the cold (last year was 18 degrees for about 16 hours!). Anyway, you may want to check out Jan Doolin's chanel for some really fascinating info on mulberries. I got some cuttings from her that will probably do okay in my zone even if it gets a little colder. She also has fig trees and now I am wanting to try those as well. I look forward to hearing more about your planting adventures 😊

You were very close to me. Funny thing is, I'm moving to 9a in less than 2 months. I'll definitely check out Jan's channel, and having a fig tree sounds amazing. Thank you!

Wow, I'm surprised you aren't getting much rain yet. It's been raining almost every couple of days here (I'm in 9b, closer to Mt. Dora area). I hope that turns around for you real soon!

I’m on the Space Coast and we’re in a drought here, too. It’s awful. I’m a native Floridian and I’ve never seen it this dry before. It’s a little scary. Today is the first day we got a good rain where it was raining on and off all day. We needed it so bad. It rained like 3 times this spring, a tad more since summer arrived.

Beautiful. Just wondering what direction your backyard faces. I’m in Florida 9b and my yard faces west which has proven to be a challenge. Thanks.
@freedomgrows
@freedomgrows 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I completely understand. My backyard also faces west, but I placed my garden on the south side (which is also a challenge because for some plants that's too much sun). So I had to improvise and move some to the west side. The seedlings and shade-loving plants are on the front/east side for morning sun and afternoon shade. Hope this helps 🤗

How do you tell whether you have a male of female papaya early on? I have a few growing and never realized that there was a difference...🤷
@freedomgrows
@freedomgrows 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Lori. You can tell by their flowers. The male papaya flower is generally small and tubular; slightly different from the female flower. Papayas can either be female (bear fruit but need male to pollinate), male (no fruit), and hermaphrodite (self pollinating - no male needed). If you have Red Lady papayas, they are self pollinating 🤗. I for sure have 1 male papaya, but waiting on my others to start flowering to see if I can find a female.

@@freedomgrows How old before the flowering process begins? When my son moved north, he left me with 3 papayas. I thought for sure that I lost them with the freeze we had earlier this year. But they came back and are doing well......no flowers yet!!
@freedomgrows
@freedomgrows 2 жыл бұрын
@@lorisilva10784 oh that's really nice! I believe they start flowering at 4-6 months. Yours probably stalled a bit due to the frost but should be fine. The male I have was purchased from a nursery (not sure of its age) and already had flowers on it. The others I have were started from seed about 3-4 months ago, so I'm still waiting for them to start flowering.
