I love bc ferries and consider the journey across the sea (which I have done 50+ times in the last 2 years ) to be amazing. Like going on a mini cruise and if you're a bc senior it's free Monday to Thursday! It's an incrediblly busy system and unless there's an act of god like wind and heavy seas, they are so reliable.

A Canadian who appreciates our health system, nice. You’re right, it’s not perfect, but it can be pretty amazing at the cost of zero, out of pocket, dollars. Of course we pay taxes for it but we’ll never be financially ruined due to an illness. Great video!

I’ve been here on vancouver island for almost 3 years, still no family doctor, no walk in clinics, pretty much use virtual doctors for everything, in Victoria i find the local produce is not cheap as compared to ontario (where im from) that being said the quality of produce is excellent from local farmers. Beyond all the challenges that i have faced, life is 100% better here. Being by the ocean, seeing the mountains, breathing in the fresh air, access to nature & wildlife is calming. Eventually i plan to move up island away from cities as i want to be in more rural setting once I don’t need to work. Love it here, so happy to hear you are having positive experience too

Born on the island way back in 1946. I was ten before I even got the first trip off. Gotta say it was much, much better then with less people around. Lived and travelled all over the world and somehow I ended up back on the island to stay 35 years ago. If I was younger and less attached, I would move just to get away from the crowds. The Kootenays area of BC has been my preferred destination for a lot of years even though it too has been 'discovered'.

I always appreciate your thoughts and perspectives. I’m 69 and still can’t get a family Dr here in Saskatoon. Fortunately, there’s a clinic close to me that accommodates seniors who don’t have a Dr. I broke my wrist and had to have surgery a year ago and received excellent care through our healthcare system and it was looked after immediately. I’m very thankful.❤

I discovered Yuma Arizona last October and luckily got to spend the winter there. It's awesome!!...The dry air just pretty much gets rid of my arthritis. I love this place! Now I'm not rich ,but I count it money well spent to try and get my ass down here for the winter. It is interesting to hear how others around the world are now currently having struggles within the healthcare systems worldwide. Here in New Zealand like Canada we have 'free' healthcare, as well as now huge public waiting lists and a severe lack of family doctors and surgeries. Once you are in the door the services are totally amazing. ❤

Groceries are more expensive everywhere this year and often gas is cheaper than the mainland. Gas is super expensive compared to Alberta, for sure. BC ferries is a publicly owned company. It used to be a crown corporation. Post Covid lock downs there are employment shortages and things are much worse now for bc ferries. My understanding is mandates are still in place for healthcare so staffing is a problem. I have lived on the island most of my life. I lived in Nelson, BC for 12 years and when I moved back I said I'll never leave the ocean again. I wish Tiny house living was easier. I'd like to try it. Wishing you all the best. Island living is great.

Happy Sunday and happy one year anniversary of living on the island 🎉 . The health care in the states is a sh*t show. In the area where I live had two health care systems. They’ve merged and the quality of healthcare has suffered and being a nurse I see the patients and their struggles and their options for choice decrease. If I could I’d move to Canada in a hot minute. Anyway the analogy of the grass is always greener is really a different shade of brown. There are pros and cons everywhere. I enjoy your blog because you give your honest thoughts.

I am a 5th generation Islander and some ancestors long before that. The Island has been discovered and there is no turning back. Very sad to see forests clear cut and mountains blasted down for mass subdivisions. All the secret spots are not so secret anymore. We understand why the Island is so popular but that popularity may be the reason why everything has gotten so expensive. In some cases unaffordable. Loved the BC Ferries when you could have a sit down meal in the on-board restaurant. Not the buffet, the restaurant, complete with waiters.

Washington ferries are a great service but we have 2 hour waits at times. Our ferries are getting old so breakdown sometimes and other ferries get diverted to cover popular routes. I am blessed to also live in a beautiful & peaceful place in the US and I’m thankful, but there are also challenges. Our health care system is awful. I have insurance, but can’t afford enough insurance to cover 100% so I’m still paying off my late husbands hospital visits! It’s shameful, but I won’t get into a political rant! I will continue to count my many blessings. I love rainy and snowy days and that cozy feeling when able to stay home with a hot cup of tea or cocoa, wrapped in a comfy blanket with a good read. I don't think the wait for a family doctor is that long everywhere in B.C. I waited 13 months to be paired with a family doctor in Abbotsford. Then, I had to go to his office and fill out a form listing all my illnesses and medications. About three months after that, I was accepted as his patient. It worked out well. The first thing he did was order extensive blood tests, and that is how I found out that I have low iron. I thought I was tired all the time because I'm getting older. So now I'm on iron pills and awaiting a specialist appointment.

I live in the US, our city has a shortage of all doctors and in general medical personnel. And in general is a real nightmare to get a dr appt. The past year every primary care dr appt I had was canceled because the doctor leaves the practice. I gave up and drive 1.5 hours each way but have a good doctor. And the veterinarians have a 3-5 month wait time and do not take new clients even if it's a life and death emergency. It is easier to drive up to 2 hours each way to get an appointment quicker. I love your hair.❤ Your area gets more rain than Comox, Qualicum and Parksville area. Embrace it! Gas is cheaper on the Island than here on the mainland. Go figure. If it wasn’t an Island, they would have destroyed the natural habitat with their big fancy houses and have high rises everywhere. Thank goodness you have to take a ferry, it keeps less people from thinking about moving there. The ferries used to be great when it was still a crown corporation. Then the government decided it should be privatized. Now, if you don’t pay the extra money to reserve, you will be waiting forever. Now, It’s all about corporate profits.

Also re- doctors- try putting your name on a NP (nurse practitioner) list. I finally got one last year after my doctor abruptly retired during covid. And I wouldn't go back to seeing a doctor even if I could. Doctor vs NP Doctor- "What's the issue?" 10 minutes alotted 1 ailment only discussed. NP - "How are you doing, tell me everything?" 30 mins (or more) later we've checked all boxes. And you leave feeling like they truly care.

I was born and spent almost 12 years of my life in Brentwood Bay. You can always bypass the Malahat by taking the Mill Bay Ferry from Mill Bay to Brentwood Bay (the drive may be a bit longer and you have to pay for a small ferry trip). I agree that BC is terrible regarding a lack of family physicians. Since I have been living in the metro Vancouver area I have been under the care of a nurse practitioner for the past 13 years... still waiting for a family doctor. I'm not complaining though as I think NPs are far more thorough. The cost of gas is way more expensive (and fluctuates on a daily basis) in metro Vancouver, where on Vancouver Island it is a bit less and will stay at a steady price for weeks.

I think the issue of finding a family doctor is about moving, not about location, although some locations are more challenging than others. Getting a family doctor in Ontario is impossible, it does not happen. We waited on a waiting list for a Nurse Practitioner for over five years, and when we finally reached the top of the list we were told there were 400 families behind on the waiting list. Friends have moved only to find that they have no family doctor or nurse practitioner in the new location, so that the emergency department in the hospital is their only way to find health care. Wait times in the emergency rooms are seven or more hours, little wonder when it has to fill in for family doctors and nurse practitioners. Our provincial government wants to introduce private health care, saying it will improve wait times, yes, for those who can afford to pay to jump the queue it certainly will improve wait times. Health care in Canada has dissolved into the deep dark pit of greed, someone is making money, but it is not our health are workers. I need an appointment with a specialist, the referral was made, it is for a serious, very serious life threatening condition, and the wait time is two years, two years, and I may not be here to attend.

I've lived on the island all my life and have been 8 years without a family doctor. I love it here and rarely leave but it has changed for the worse in the last 30 years , too many people, too much congested traffic, especially on the south island. Housing has gotten ridiculous and way too many people with nothing better to do than report people for living in tiny homes or sleeping in their RV's. MYOB The laws have to change as tiny home villages are such a wonderful solution for those on fixed incomes...... We have, sadly, been discovered before we pulled up the drawbridge.

WA State ferries is in the same boat--lol. One third of the fleet is out of commission and if one boat goes down or not enough crew shows up, getting across the Sound becomes really difficult. And people take those back and forth commuting every day. Now the rain... I'm here for. I tell people I didn't move to Seattle for the sunshine. I've yelled at the sun when it comes out after a good storm. And when you add going back to Standard Time, I'm in snuggy, jammie heaven. 🙃

I can really understand some of the not so good, BUT, having lived In Vancouver most of my early years, Medical and shortage of Doctors is even worse in the US, and certainly more expensive..... once I had to go on Medicare, its $300 + a month for a whole LOWER tier of care. Followed my Doctor to new clinic, and $$$ more in his new location that is harder to get to. Same wit WA State Ferries, down 5 boats and irregular, ongoing chaos for people depending on them. ALL the BEST and LOVE the coast too! Cheers from down south! :)

Just viewing this now, Adelina! I am surprised the ferry company is not required by the government to run a better service. That just seems like such a slap in the face to all of their customers who rely on them. I will tell you this: If there was another ferry service competing with them -- they would straighten out their act in no time! Just typing that makes me laugh! It sounds like your medical workaround is a perfect solution -- maybe she can be your primary care person -- as she can prescribe meds -- so that works! But the best part of all of this is you are living where you wanted to live and nothing got in the way of that -- even the nasty neighbor --- it worked out even better! SO happy 1st anniversary and wishing you many, many more! Cheers from NYC!

Vancouver Island? I love it but it’s also becoming unaffordable. It’s magical but in the end, I ended up in the Kootenays. 2nd best place to be. Mild winters with lots of snow and decent summers.

The grey isn't just December & January. I find the 5-6 months a year without much sun at all kind of a downer. It can get depressing. Elsewhere in Canada can be MUCH colder but you get a lot more sun on those really cold days. I also don't find the humidity in the summer anywhere near what happens in places like southern Ontario. The summers here are soooo dry. We also don't get lightening or thunder on the island! Crazy 🙃 Taking the ferry or flying to the mainland is SO expensive, especially if you need a car on the other side or need to pay to park on the island. It takes a long time too when you take into account having to be so early to wait for your ferry. There are things you just can't get here so you pay extra to ship or go get it. The malahat highway is not any big deal if you are used to driving in harsher weather elsewhere. Healthcare here is pretty awful, both in availability and quality outside of emergent care. Canada is only better compared to the US; our tax dollars are poorly managed in healthcare and the system is terribly broken. Been here 4 years and the rose coloured glasses are now cracked ;) Sorry your old neighbour complained about your tiny house; sounds like an a-hole. Hope you have a good spot now with better neighbours.

I don't think 1 person should be able to trigger a bylaw violation. There's a couple in Vernon parked on their parent's acreage where one person complained and they're now being fined daily.. It's so wrong and I wish I knew what to do about it. If I lived in Vernon, I would be talking to every single city councillor to get them to change the bylaws. It's BS. I'm currently renting a house, but after I retire in a couple years, God knows where I'm going to be so I'm a little fiesty about this issue in case I need to live in my RV too lol

I imagine a little bit of island fever is normal when moving from the mainland, but it seems a (relatively) small price to pay for living in paradise. For me, being landlocked would be suffocating, and I too love the smells, serenity, and beauty of being near the ocean. Life is all about trade-offs, eh? (my feeble attempt at a Canadianism). 🙂
