Well, the name of Lee Van Cleef is pronounced just like the word beef. The lady who is was assaulted in those flashbacks played Lee's sister. Meanwhile, found a great sale on this trilogy on 4K this month and the results are fantastic.

I just watched The Good, The Bad and the Ugly for the first time last night. I can see why it's an iconic and influential movie but I certainly agree with some of the criticisms, particularly about the film's length. I'm fine with longer movies but this film was unnecessarily too long. The story seemed to wander all over the place. In my view, the entire segment about the civil war and blowing up the bridge didn't need to be in the movie at all. I enjoyed the film and I'm glad I saw it. But I certainly didn't love it.

I love The Man With No Name Trilogy! I also like Fistful the best, followed by Few Dollars More, and then The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly. The first two are more straight-up movies, while The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly is more of a movie-nerd movie (I mean that with no offense, and with all due respect). I got The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly on 4K pretty much right away, and I still wasn't able to get the slipcase! I've had the other 2 on blu ray as part of a Man with No Name set for awhile now, but the quality of them leaves much to be desired. That's why I'm super excited for the new 4Ks of them that Kino is supposed to release this year. Two other Leone westerns you've gotta watch are Once Upon a Time in the West and Duck You Sucker (aka A Fistful of Dynamite, aka Once Upon a Time the Revolution). Looking forward to seeing what other Westerns you'll be watching this month!

Another informative review. What separates Sergio Leone's westerns from John Wayne westerns is the cynicism of the former verses the simple black and white and tidy morality of the latter. John Wayne was never a fan of "High Noon," which depicted an entire western town abandoning its sheriff, when their community was threatened by a gang of outsiders. Wayne could never accept the idea of an entire American town cowering in the face of danger and not pitching in to help. "High Noon" was imbued with cynicism, just as Sergio Leone's westerns were often drenched in it. Clint Eastwood wanted to work with John Wayne, but Wayne refused. On a small note Lee Van Cleef's last name is not pronounced "Cliff." It is Cleef, as in "leaf." The reason cynicism in westerns became prominent and successful in the 60's is that there was growing discontent over the Vietnam War, including American young people growing cynical with both the Johnson and Nixon administrations. The time was ripe for taking, what had become, the over-arching myth of the American western, particularly its definition of morality and turning it on its head. "High Noon," which came out in the '50's, was, in part, a response to the McCarthy period. "The Wild Bunch" is another Western helmed by Sam Peckinpah that is drenched in cynicism. Decades later and theses films, regardless the cultural context out of which they sprang, still surprise us with their rawness, their originality, and their unflinching honesty. Also check out Sergio Leone's "Once Upon a Time in the West," and "Once Upon a Time in America," both scored by the incomparable Ennio Morricone.

Yeah these movies are not a real trilogy. They were just produced back to back so that’s how the studio advertises them. It being called “man with no name” was also just a marketing gimmick because he actually has a different name in all three films. Regardless, they are all fantastic. Also, if they were really connected GBU would be a prequel because he gets his poncho at the end of the movie lol.

I’ve never seen Sanjuro but Fistful of dollars IS as much a western remake of Yojimbo as magnificent seven was the seven samurai. I can almost agree that fistful of dollars is the best of the bunch. Good bad and the ugly bc of the cinematographer and score… it’s damn good and probably technically better. For a few dollars more did not leave an impression on me AT ALL. I think seeing Lee van cleef as his angel eyes characters is so damn good. Side note. I think the highlights are too blown out in many spot to actually do an HDR color grade. @@C4rL72 Sorry, I was just funning you. Do you think Lennon based the '4000 holes' line on something he had read? Or did it simply scan right and sound good? Very interesting to think the first 'western' was shot in England, and so long ago. I had never heard of that before. I remember seeing Sid James in Carry On Cowboy which I thought was well done, given that geographically England is not the first place one would think of when imagining locales with a western appearance. Do you know of any other Westerns filmed in Great Britain?
@C4rL722 жыл бұрын
@@jonahlevin67 Yes, there was the article John had seen about 4,000 potholes in Lancashire roads. But he’s also making a rude double-entendre remark: “Now they know how many holes it takes to fill the Albert Hall” basically means “arseholes”. from Quora, I never delved into the 4000 holes but always knew it was a running theme in Blackburn, tbh I thought it was a Blackburn Rovers thing as it was my late dad who told me about it, there was a Rovers Fanzine called 4000 Holes I thought it was the same thing.
