You know what I like about this movie? No one is completely good or bad. The "good" is just better (sometimes and in some things) than the 2 others but he's still greedy and ready to break any deal just to benefit himself, the "ugly" is a flawed type but the most sympathetic of the group because of the traumas of his past as we learn from the conversation with his brother and his more humorous attitude coming mostly from his stupidity (especially compared to the 2 others), so we can identify more with him because he's a comic relief and we all are "ugly" in some way and the "bad" is indeed the worse of the 3 because he's so self centered but is also a traumatized isolated person, so it makes sense he can't create any real close ralationships and only trusts himself, but he mostly kills other killers or greedy rich men and showed sympathy for the injured soldiers in the ruined fortress!

The title is somewhat ironic. "The Good" has no moral compass whatsoever and is as ready to kill, betray, deceive or trick as anyone as long as it is for his own benefit. He gave Tuco a chance in the desert instead of killing him outright, yes, but it was a slim chance and he probably did it out of some kind of superstition, not for Tuco's sake. However, he is smart and, contrary to the rest of the cutthroats, he is capable of some compassion.

One of the many scenes in the film that set it apart from all previous Westerns, and even Sergio Leone's own work to that date. Lee Van Cleef's performance was faultless in the movie, though he appeared for much less time on screen than either of the other two stars. There were few other stock western bad guys of the era who could have played this scene as perfectly as Lee Van Cleef did. The victim did nicely as well (completely, and rightly terrified of the guy he has hired to kill a former army comrade), not to mention the trademark Leone facial close-ups.

Possibly interesting footnote: Lee Van Cleef's nickname in the original italian version was "Sentenza" which could be translated as (you probably guessed it) "Sentence", "Judgment", not "Angel Eyes". To this day I'm still unsure if Sergio Leone picked both versions or if one of the two was decided at a later stage by the production.

When I first saw this film I couldn't tell if Lee Van Cleef was the Bad or the Ugly. Either way, the guy is awesome.
