The Gossip Columnist Who Ruined Dozens Of Hollywood Careers

During the Golden Age of Hollywood, gossip ruined careers. All thanks to Hedda Hopper.
Born Elda Furry in 1885 in Pennsylvania, she ran away at 18 to work on Broadway. She became a chorus girl there and married actor DeWolf Hopper. His previous spouses were, ironically, Ella, Ida, Edna, and Nella. To avoid confusion, Elda changed her name to Hedda after consulting a numerologist. In 1916, she began doing movies and got her big break in Virtuous Wives two years later. But it wasn’t her acting but rather her wardrobe that caught everyone’s attention. Actors provided their own costumes at the time, so she spent her $5,000 salary on clothes. She appeared in over 150 films and TV series, mostly playing society women. However, by the mid-1930s, her career has stalled.
Hedda was a single mother by then, and she was in a desperate search for income. Since she always seemed to know the best gossip, she tried her hand at journalism. In 1935, she debuted her gossip column working for $50 a week. Soon Hopper was making $250,000 per year. Her readership rose to 35 million people. Her pieces became a must-read, as her rival Louella Parsons’s once were.
Since 1939, she hosted her own radio show in addition to her columns. Hedda promoted her friends and crushed those who lied to her or worked with Parsons. A mere article of hers could destroy a celebrity’s career as well as save one.
Once she kept suggesting Ingrid Bergman should star in The Bells of St. Mary’s. When the actress got the part, Hopper was credited as the main factor for producers’ decision. She was the one who ruined her later by writing about her child with director Rossellini. Hedda also helped Joan Crawford to take down Bette Davis. She rang up over 600 Academy voters to tell them about Davis’s nasty behavior on set. Most of those stories were made up by Hopper and Crawford. As a result, Davis didn’t win an Oscar she was expected to get in 1963. Being a conservative and a Republican, Hopper demonized Communists and gays. Screenwriter Dalton Trumbo was blacklisted for years after she exposed him as a Communist. She loathed Charlie Chaplin for having affairs with younger girls. He was denied re-entry to the US when she cooperated with the FBI. Hopper referred to her Beverly Hills mansion as «the house that fear built».
Her unscrupulous columns got her many enemies in Hollywood. Joseph Cotten pulled the chair out from under Hopper at a dinner. Joan Bennett sent her a skunk on Valentine’s day. It came with a note: «I stink and so do you». Apart from her scandalous reports, she was famous for her extravagant style. She loved oversized and overdecorated hats and allegedly bought 150 of them per year. Her crazy headgear was even mocked in a Time cover once. The «gargoyle of gossip» worked tirelessly until the very end. She died of pneumonia in 1966. She was 80.

@Tessie Don't feel bad for Hedda; she made millions off gossip. What's wrong with seeing a photo of Hedda falling because a chair was pulled from under her? She sometimes used the pen as a weapon to hurt other actors' careers. To have her publicly humiliated serves her right.
@ewaleokadia76
@ewaleokadia76 5 жыл бұрын
@Tessie No, she also ruined careers and even wrote falsehoods when she wanted to. For this she got paid good money. I am sure she is resting in peace but she used her talent for gossip as a weapon, too. It just saddens me that she couldn't be more honorable. Yes, she raised her, son, William, who became an actor. Essentially, many actors had to suck up to her or walk on pins and needles to not get on her s**t list. That's no life to live.😑
@ewaleokadia76
@ewaleokadia76 5 жыл бұрын
@Tessie I understand your point of view and I DO respect it. Yes, she was a single mother who raised her son instead of going on welfare. The point here is that she was HUGELY popular figure in her lifetime. Therefore, there is enough reference material to fact check what this video is saying about Hedda's life. She is still a source of curiosity like many actors from the Golden Age. Plus, there are still people alive who can remember her as she died in 1966. Ordinary people like you and I will return to dust and will be remembered only by family and friends. For one person alone to be able to make or break people's careers, to have such enormous power is uncanny. She will always be a source of mystery and even, at times, a source of documentaries and such. She is not unlike many other popular American icons such as Elvis Presley, Marilyn Monroe, Betty Grable , etc.

@Tessie you are just as dumb as her.. So it was ok to hurt people with her vicious vile tongue but now that she is DEAD, IT'S HUSH HUSH... HELL NO!! LET THE TRUTH BE HEARD. PEOPLE LISTENED TO HER GOSSIP BECAUSE IT WAS A DIFFERENT TIME THEN. THERE WAS NO GOOGLE, NO WIKIPEDIA, NOTHING TO RESEARCH AND FIND OUT THE TRUTH... SHE COULD HAVE MADE A HONEST LIVING AS A NURSE, DOCTOR, SCHOOL TEACHER ETC ETC TO SUPPORT HER SON AND NOT DESTROY PEOPLE'S LIVES... WHAT ABOUT THE CHILDREN OF THE PEOPLE SHE DESTROYED??? HUH? WHAT ABOUT LITTLE TOMMY WHO'S MOMMY DIDN'T GET THE CONTRACT BECAUSE THIS WOMAN MADE UP LIES AND BLACK BALLED HER OR HIM FOREVER IN HOLLYWOOD, WHILE SHE LAUGHED IN GLEE AND SIPPED WINE WITH HER FRIENDS. David Niven played a joke on her. He went to to a nightclub with his friend's wife and took a dark corner table. His friend came in with Niven's wife and took another dark corner table. They came running at each other in a wild fury and then proceeded to waltz together. She was furious. Ten of her tipsters had woke her up just as soon as both couples came into the restaurant - I doubt if she ever forgave him.

I believe he said something along the lines of "what sort of silly business let's you have this much fun and you get paid daft amounts for it?" But sometimes charm and charisma is enough to make an acting career I suppose. Plus he was a pretty decent chap by all accounts. He had a distinguished war record that he never crowed on about. Even put his career on hold to re enlist in 1940. He'd acknowledge his time in the army but he always downplayed it out of respect for all those who'd been killed.

Even as a child in the 50's & 60's, I remember her column and the remarks made about how she was feared and the destruction left behind her. No wonder her son, William Hopper, didn't really ever want to be in pictures. He rose above his awful mother and became quite successful as Paul Drake in the Perry Mason series. She may have hated gay people, and there were lots of them in Hollywood, but her son working with a gay man gave him a good job and great reputation for many years. 6:01 Hedda's husband, who eventually divorced her, was 27 years older than her. Maybe that was a deciding factor for her loathing Chaplin and his relationships with younger women. Also, speaking about Dalton Trumbo at 5:46, I remember reading that during the screening of The Sandpiper (starring Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor), Hopper kicked up a fuss on seeing Trumbo credited as the screenwriter and Elizabeth Taylor turned around and told her to "shut the fuck up". Goes to show how tired a lot of people were of Hopper.

Deb 7 nope it’s pretty much hitting the nail on the head, think about it, youtubers have the power to hold our attention for long periods of time and we almost believe them and everything they say like the news no matter if it’s true or not like if 2 youtubers are fighting then are friends 2 days later and generated 40 million or more views on their feud videos then it’s obviously a publicity stunt which seems to be this woman’s forte. It’s crazy because my mom would tell me stories of Joan Crawford and Bette Davis or Bette Davis and Talulah Bankhead and as I got older I realized all the stories she told me about Mae West and everybody I grew up loving all generated from this woman imagine the type of damage she would have done with the internet and there’s plenty of youtubers that have involvements with the fbi and cia look at jake and Ryan Paul and as far as getting people jobs in Hollywood KZbin seems to just be a step behind from having its own casting couch.

At The Oscars 1963, Crawford accepted the award for Anne Bancroft, for "The Miracle Worker". And pissed Bette off big time. "At the after party, in the center of each table were bottles of vodka, gin, bourbon, scotch. The first thing Bette did was take a glass and fill it with scotch, right to the top-no water, no ice. “This is for La Belle Crawford,” she said." “She doesn’t drink scotch,” I said. (William Frey) “She drinks vodka.” “I don’t care what she drinks. This is going in her fucking face!" No one disrespects Bette Davis! Gotta love that woman.

I first heard of Hedda Hopper when she made a cameo appearance on The Beverly Hillbillies. Granny thought that Hopper was looking for a husband because she was wearing one of her extravagant hats. Mainly because that Cousin Pearl was wearing a similar hat when she was courting for a husband. I definitely agree with Granny when she called Hopper a 30 year loser. And when Mr. Drysdale referred to her as a troublemaker!

So she hated gays. Well her son Dennis(Perry Mason fame) was a closeted gay along with Raymond Burr. Why else would he be chosen to get that role?! As for bringing down Bette Davis, she may have prevented her for getting the Oscar for Whatever Happened to Baby Jane but she could not destroy this legend. Hopper should be reviled and cursed for Davis' loss of the Oscar for her greatest role and greatest movie!!!

1962 was a tough year for the Oscars. Davis' rivals were: Katharine Hepburn, "Long Days Journey Into Night"; Anne Bancroft; "The Miracle Worker"; Geraldine Page, "Sweet Bird of Youth", and Lee Remick, "Days of Wine and Roses". Davis lost because her performance was way over the top! The actors had an even tougher field. Robert Preston, "The Music Man"; Keir Dullea, "David and Lisa"; Montgomery Clift, "Freud", and Dean Stockwell, "Long Days Journey into Night" are just a few who didn't make the roster. Some great movies were snubbed, as well. Just not enough slots.
