I'm also a Christian, right-leaning Conservative in the subculture myself and have noticed this. Personally, I don't care about a person's views so long as they leave others alone. Many bands I listen to are ideologically opposed to my views yet I love them. Sadly, these wingnuts are trying to cancel and might be successful at it, the vocalist of Sonsombre at the moment for being a member of the CSA. The accusation is that they are a white supremacists organization, yet they have black, Native American, and Jewish members. They have great music, but false accusations of racism may have destroyed them. They essentially want to subvert the goth subculture to where you have to be far-left to be goth. All extremes should be condemned for certain, but the left seems to be the one trying to end modern goth band's careers for not conforming to their ideology.

Agreed 100%! Indeed I have seen the Sonsombre situation. As someone into history I think it is important to learn the lessons of the Civil War. Brandon has been nothing but kind in all my interactions with him. The way he has been treated is unfair. He apologized and clearly cares about his fans. FORTUNATELY if you see the thread... it has only 22 or so "angry" reacts but 88 "love" over 20 "Care" and well over 100+ likes. The fans know his heart even though the loud extremists are trying to silence them.

It's the same in my country in Eastern Europe. A lot of people are on left-side here with anti-religious beliefs. It's like you cannot be goth if you are not atheist/left/liberal, etc. And music, music is not so important (for some) or there is only one true goth called trad goth. I just feel that goth became a lifestyle/ideological manifest being focused on very materialistic parts of subculture (mostly appearance). Or they see goth as some vampire freak show. Industrial/EBM scene is quite opposite, very focused on music, shows and collecting CDs/vinyls with minimal politics/belief system (it's treated more as personal stuff ) in similar vein to electronic dance music scenes. I feel like goth scene was more neutral and open-minded in the past. Maybe that's because my country is under agressive secularisation now (we are late for 30 years thanks to communism) and a lot of anti-christian and left things are just popular here. I just feel a lot of people just radicalised. And not only in Goth subculture. Literally everywhere. And some people just told me that if I don't like anti-religious stuff this is not subculture for me. Because I am not a fan of inverted crosses, pentagrams and so on. And if I wear a normal cross (even for pure aesthetic not as religious symbol) I am just a poser. Seriously, I don't remember times when goth was so narrow-minded. Funny how many cry for tolerance when they have none. I guess this not so hardcore like in US, yet shift towards left from more neutral/apolitical view is very clear.

I totally understand! I have seen it first hand and seen in on goth social media pages. Fortunately there are quite a few of us that not only tolerate various views some are Christians that lean conservative like myself. I get the scene and tolerate the things I disagree with because I have sympathy for them. Many are lost and need to be found and I tell my story! I will never understand full on communism in this scene...we are individuals and base our scene on individuality/creativity not hive mind collectivism. All the best to you, stay strong, and God bless!

I've reached a bit of an odd point. I still consider myself a Goth. I love Batcave and Darkwave and Deathrock above pretty much all other musical genres, still paint my nails black, have darker and victorianesque/glam romantic tastes, but I don't associate with the online Goth subculture and there's barely any local scene to speak of, Local dark music scenes leaning more towards industrial and alt-rock directions, which isn't the same thing. But I keep getting banned from community forums for opinions as mild as "People need to keep politics and music separate" and "I think BLM are grifters considering they've used their donations to buy a mansion and are openly marxist grifters". My politics trend more towards classic liberalism and libertarianism and that apparently makes me a super turbonazi these days, confusingly. Politics is a losing game and people need to stop playing.

I have just started to watch this one, but i am impatient to say that when i hear a goth preach BLM or trans women are women i get sick to my stomach 🤮 some even go as far as saying "if you don't support trans people then you are not a goth" 😶 like what does a music-based subculture have to to with that? I mean okay, the goth scene generally attracts more artistic and fluid individuals, but you can't put a ban on goth just because someone does not agree with you 😂 for the record i do support trans people (actual ADULT trans people, not the unicorns who want to harm children) bisexual and gay people. I believe they should be able to work, live and exist in our society same as anyone else. But i also believe in biological reality, in the right to have your own thoughts and express them without fear of being outcasted. I don't believe in unicorns and i am grounded in reality! Trans women for example are actual men, they are not women, they are men who TRANSition to live AS women. Can't believe reality has become offensive... Progressivism is slowly turning into fascism or Orwell's 1984... The goth subculture should be welcoming to all who enjoy the dark aesthetic and the music. Perhaps you've seen a fellow KZbinr of yours Kai Decadence 🙂 he discusses these topics at a great length.

Spot on when it comes to Goth and yes it is all about the music. One's sexual orientation/gender/preference is not relevant to it. Gender Dysphoria is not a trend/identity, it is a serious condition. You are absolutely correct in that progressives have now descended into the Sci-Fi mentalities of 1984 and Brave New World and it is troubling how authoritarian they have become. I’m pretty left/liberal but I’m SO sick of the far left extremism in the scene. I’ve developed severe social anxiety over it. I have to censure my views at goth events in order to not get kicked out for wrongthink. It’s so conformist/authoritarian. And they act EXACTLY like hardcore religious nuts(I’m an ex Orthodox Jew trust me I Know the behaviors) , far left politics is their religion. It’s made me think of just leaving the scene and just doing goth stuff on my own with the few other moderates I’ve found. But decided against it because they would win from that, and because I truly love goth music/culture and still want to dance at nights and listen to music at shows/concerts. Now know that I very much disagree with conservative views but you are still goth if you have them(it’s music based) and should not be threatened with violence or be banned from events. You are very spot on about the anarchy and communism parts. These people ignore history and current events when they don’t like that it goes against their ideology. I really condemn the far left quietly but I fear the violence and being kicked out of events if I speak up. I hate being forced into silence. Thanks so much for this video, even though I’m pretty liberal/left and not conservative it makes me feel less alone.

Thank you for your post and it truly is enlightening while also tragic to see your experiences and you are very much not alone! Take a second and think about...here we are in a "counter culture" and we can not speak openly or at least have a civilized discussion about things in our scene from fear of being "cancelled" or ostracized! I know what it is like, the people who have known me for years know I am a Christian and base my worldview on it and fortunately many know and tolerate it but some don't. It is a dangerous hivemind and I think many are turned away from events because of it. Our local DJs in my city have very low numbers compared to 20 years ago but major events like The Sisters of Mercy or The Cure have packed venues because the people who love the music and don't want to deal with drama attend those events! I still love this subculture for the amazing music, attire/arts etc despite the cliquey extremists and they deserve to be ignored. I hope you find more like minded individuals and feel comfortable with them in your area and wish you all the best!

After watching this, I gotta say, I really love the points you have made, because the woke in the Goth scene really don't see the irony of their hypocrisy. They're just sing and doing these things to gain brownie points and to seem like they have done good, but don't seem to see or think about the damages they result from their party. The more we have these folks, the more the scene will divide and likely become even more underground than ever before. Likely people outside the subculture who wanted to experience the scene will likely encounter these radical leftist folks and they'll ruin it for them, because they see that these people are nothing more but about control and that's not Goth should be at all. The more we have this go on, more and more Goths are just going to drop from the scene. I for one have contemplated several times and it would be painful to do so. We need more folks like you to speak up. I encourage it. These woke Goths need to learn their place that they cannot control how people live or view things. Free thinking means Conservatives and religious folks are welcome in too weather these weirdos like it or not. For this you just earned my subscription.

Many many thanks! Agreed 💯%. The unfortunate truth and I'm seeing it, hearing it, and may even post a video about it, but the scene is indeed dying. I'm seeing as well as hearing about events along the East Coast here that have smaller and smaller numbers as well as promoters/venues looking to other genres. It stinks because there are a ton of great newer bands but it is what it is! Mexico and South America have had a growing scene so I wouldn't be surprised if more festivals don't start there. The scene here lacks TRUE tolerance...which means you tolerate others even if you disagree with them.

I'm definitely left leaning / liberal and non-religious but I absolutely have friends with other views. Life would be boring if we were all the same. I do think the goth scene traditionally lends itself to a left way of thinking but this doesn't mean it should exclude others who hold different views. It sets a dangerous precedent if right leaning goths are threatened with physical violence for their beliefs. I think as said, the concerns are always on the extremes of any view. Globally, I am far more concerned with the rise of the extreme right but that doesn't mean that all aspects of left wing view point are not without concern. I find myself largely agreeing with the content of this video, despite being politically different.

I feel that extreme "liberals" tend to think of one definition of "conservatism" and that is the conservatism that comes from the views of the old left. that conservatism doesn't accept things that are "different" or "socially new" and that can be true for a lot of conservatives BUT not all of them are like that. for a fact beacuse they concider themselvs "goth" which can not be hardcore conservatism in terms of facisim. there are conservatives who tend to right-wing politics because they believe in religious conservatism or political order, not because they hate gays or because they are racist or whatever. With that being said. I'm not sure what I am. I lean towards conservative views as an observant Jew but believe in some liberal social views but I mostly lean towards conservatism. I think it doesn't matter. Goth is not political as a whole. Some goths are liberal and some are conservative. I'm fine with that. And if you consider yourselves "liberals" don't tell other people which party to vote for because Gothic culture does not belong to "liberals" it belongs to those who love music and fashion and believe in individuality and self-expression.

Fascism is not technically conservative. What it truly is, is a subset of totalitarianism but based on a racial religion essentially. It used socialistic components in Germany to carry its authoritarian statutes and undid traditions. True conservatism is about preservation of traditions and of the past. American conservatism is about Judeo-Christian values, family structure, property, self determination etc. At this point, being Goth is not a big deal to current conservatives who adhere more to populist ideologues. It isn't 1983 anymore and this day and age, tattooed punk and goth looking individuals are all in the conservative movement and it is no big deal. People are judged by their views more than appearance. The left wing has started to leave true liberal views behind and began embracing further left ideologues that are more authoritarian. Left leaning folks in the Goth scene have grown more intolerant for those who view the world differently than they and they are pushing people away rather than drawing them in.

I’m pretty young, also a Christian goth/alternative person. I’m unsure if the local scene in my area is super left-leaning. Honestly, it’s likely, because my country is conservative and a lot of alternative people here tend to be the opposite. I’ve actively avoided engaging with them due to how polarised everything is these days. Even in my daily life, I can’t say something even remotely critical about the LGBT community lest I piss off everyone around me, so why would my local alternative scene (which is pretty left-leaning anyway) be any less different? So I’ve been listening to the music by myself and discovering so many new bands thanks to the Internet (there’s some amazing post-punk out there). I don’t know if that still makes me goth, but nothing stops me from liking the music and finding alternative Christian bands. Glad I’ve discovered your channel. Nice to know there are other people like me and I’m not alone. You’ve just earned a sub 🖤

It isn't much different here in the USA, as I explain in my video, the majority of Goths/alternative folks lean leftward and especially have more liberal/left-wing social views/cultural views. When I first got into the goth/industrial scene your sexuality wasn't relevant and the music was all that mattered. The LGBT community is essentially its own subculture based on human sexuality so some may be Goth but it is supposed to be all about the music. Unfortunately there has been a growing hatred against Christians because of the LGBT community being hateful against them. True tolerance, however, is tolerating not agreeing with someone's views. There are some great Christian bands: Savior Machine, The Awakening, Leper, Dark Valentine, and Batzz in the Belfry.

Greetings and thank you for your response and respectful nature in regard to your disagreement with my statements. I think it is important to have respectful dialogue and have open communication in our scene. With that in mind, Goth did indeed come from punk followed by post-punk but I humbly disagree with punk being a certain ideologue. Believe it or not...the first bands were not really that political! Think about it! You had Bowie and Iggy and the New York Dolls as your proto-punk bands but then you had the Ramones who really didn't touch on politics on their debut and focused on storytelling, relationships, horror movies etc. There are exceptions: "Havana Affair" which is actually an anti-communist track about Cuba and how the authoritarian regime took from citizens (Johnny Ramone was a conservative and it caused disagreements between him and Joey) and then there is the "Today your love, tomorrow the world" which is telling the story of German indoctrination to the youth during WWII. It looks at the human aspects of that type of brainwashing etc. Mind you both Conservatives and Liberals condemn totalitarianism. Then you have in England The Damned whose debut "Damned Damned Damned" (credited as the first UK punk album) is not strongly political. Even the Sex Pistols were more or less making songs like "God Save the Queen" and "Anarchy in the UK" to stir up controversy rather than stand grounded to certain politics (Johnny Rotten has even been vocal in recent years about the left). Interestingly enough the Sex Pistol's track "Bodies" has been interpreted as anti-abortion. I bring all this up because I have been told the same statement multiple times about how Goth, being connected to punk has to share similar political views. Really....it was The Clash that were overtly political and they came after the Sex Pistols and The Damned. In a way those bands were like the gangster rappers of the 1990s...they talked about the streets and real life without overt political leanings that would really define bands like The Exploited, Dead Kennedys, and after. Mind you DK and the Exploited started in 1978 the same year Siouxsie and the Banshees released "The Scream" which really was a cool hybrid of punk and post-punk and was groundbreaking in that regard. Bauhaus of course was around but released "Bela Lugosi's Dead" in 1979 which was the defining track for Goth and obviously by its lyrics sang about horror topics/gothic topics which is no surprise because The Ramones sang about horror movies and The Misfits also sang about horror topics. The Cure had their start around then as well as Joy Division. By 1980 you had a gauntlet of bands and albums in the Goth genre which continued after. Christian Death sang about religious themes and humanity. With all this I bring it up because Goth really isn't political. Sure many of Goths in the subculture may lean more classically liberal and especially in cultural regards but there are plenty of us that are of faith and more conservative leanings. Remember conservative can be political, economic, as well as cultural. In current conservative circles the culture supports small businesses, is anti-big corporation, and pushes for limited government and is anti-war. Many goths right and left tend to agree in those regards. We all recognize that we dress differently but may have different family values at home. Mall Goth is more or less a description to alternative youth in the 90s and early 00s that like Hot Topic and listened to Nu-metal like Korn, Slipknot etc. I was that LOL but I grew into a traditional Goth and love the same music as Goths do...we just may differ on political/cultural ideologues. All the best! God Bless!

I was active in the scene from the early 90s through to about 2008. Since then I have not been involved in the goth culture. I did attend the House Of Usher reunion more than a decade ago. That was the last time I went to a club, so I cannot attest as to the way the scene is now, anywhere. But I will say this. Most of the darkwave culture were very open-minded and seemed more right than left. Today most of those people I knew from the scene are all Trump haters. All of them. And they are very hardcore about believing whatever they hear about Covid 19. I lost various of those friends for being a member of Generation Identity, and several more when I had to end my lifetime relationship with the Democrats and began to support Trump. I did not like Trump but I supported him anyway. I am not Dem Or Rep. I am all about what is best for the greater good as opposed to what is not. About what is reasonable as opposed to what is not. what is illogical as opposed to what is not. What is most fair as opposed to what is not. having said all this I agree with all of your statements.I will not apologize to anyone because I am GenID. I am not a racist. And I am deeply offended by anyone who labels me that way. I simply do not want to see my homeland destroyed.

Agreed! I love the goth subculture and will always love the music. It is just unfortunate that it has been hijacked by a fringe minority of aggressive virtue signaling extreme leftists whose views are dangerous and destructive to what we not only hold dear in our scene but, to the world!

Should be straight out Republican well more than that a patriot. Democrats? Yuck! Kidding but be a patriot that always been for the greater good because the democratic party always lead towards socialism from socialism go communism and so on. Libersl/Democrat all seem bad news or doom to believe anything thrown at them. Good example this reality. How did the far left that you hate or dislike became this way? By being liberal or democratic. You see a band their left you see a movie the agenda is lefty you see the actor behind it their promote left, you see sport now being left. Is all part of a plan to make you into a baby left then to an "individual left" to end up being a useful idiot antifa left. By then is too late. Do what they do unfortunately cut ties

Back when I was still a Lutheran, I had an experience that totally blew my mind. This was probably 2007 or so. There was a young lady, clearly goth, who came into church dressed in a long black dress, black platform shoes, black lace fingerless gloves, had on black nail polish and lipstick, and was wearing a black veil. She was sitting in the pew sincerely praying, but the teen girls in the back (dressed very immodestly might I add) were snickering and making fun of her the whole service. This goth woman was dressed better than them, and had a more reverent attitude to boot! I walked away with a lot of respect for that lady.

@@user-kk2pc7ik7t my politics are defined by my Christian faith first and foremost. Human sexuality has become its own subculture. I personally see things like race and sexuality as temporary since in heaven we will have new bodies and be devoid of sexuality in an immortal form but that is just me. The main issue in the Goth scene is that it is intolerant...unless you subscribe to a certain worldview you are ostracized and the scene that I grew up in that loved the music no matter who you were or what your beliefs were. It is one of the reasons this scene is dying in the United States...people do not want to waste their time attending small local dance club events with cliques, drama, and intolerance. Additionally you have smaller younger bands being forced to believe a certain way and no one attends their shows because they would much rather go see a legacy act that doesn't care about the petty little things.

Hi ! I hope you can see my comment... I've always been kinda liberal, but I must say these days, I'm lost in all this polarization. Society has lost its sense of nuance. It's all black or white, no grey zone. People are enraged about everything, anything. Like narcissists who only seek their own reflexion, or yet children who are not mature enough to understand that opposite points of view are not direct attacks to them or their identity. People nowadays are too shallow, they can't separate ideologies/opinions from their own life essence/personality/soul. They don't understand that any of that can't never threaten their importance or their survival. When motivation in life is external, you lose the inner strenght to accept any difference from other people. Ironically, our subculture was about self expression and being accepting of other's difference. Now, it's all about fitting in the mold. I'm almost 50 and I don't know yet how to live with that. I've always liked colorful hair, but I refrain to dye my hair the dark blue color I would like so much, in fear of being confused with extremists. What a world we are living in...

I did! So thank you for commenting! I agree with you! I do think it is important to have one's views on an individual level (I am a Christian) but that doesn't define all Goths...we all share a passion for the music which is what binds us. We all can have different views and beliefs though! I believe you should still be able to dress how you want and have your hair the way you want and shouldn't be judged for it. If people ask you should be able to share your views and not be shamed for it. God bless you!
