The government has ‘underestimated’ inflation

Judo Bank Chief Economic Advisor Warren Hogan says the government has “underestimated” inflation.
Mr Hogan told Sky News Business Editor that a lot of governments and central banks around the world have also misjudged the inflation problem.
“And they probably haven’t done as much as they should’ve," he said.

What frustrates me is the RBA will 'punish' Australians by raising interest rates (which is all they can do). While the government just to try and grab some election point will introduce measures that increase inflation - and then the RBA will increase rates. It just goes round and round and we suffer - and no one seems to know how to fix this issue.

Higher rates won't reduce council rates,electricity, gas,registration,housing,rents, petrol and the list goes on. These sectors are all government influenced. This country is in serious trouble.

The CPI increase in the month of May last year was -0.4%. So even if, hypothetically, the increase in May 2024 is 0% (with -0.4% falling out of the 12 month window), CPI will rise from 3.6% to 4.0%! That will be the headline news and talk of rates cuts will be even more muted.

There was always going to be a second wave of inflation. The Labour government has laid out a budget that devolves itself from reality with the expectation that the RBA will take the heat when interest rates inevitably have to go up.

When costs of business keep rising prices GO UP. Insurance is going up due to EV'S and lithium batteries. Transport costs GO UP when fuel prices GO UP.

Economists never get it right and the proof is increasing rates IS INFLATIONARY, particularly with NO competition in the corporate sectors creating the inflation, rents will go up due to severe lack of supply and the 50% of all homes/residential OWNED not mortgaged will have higher disposable income through higher deposit rates. The key essential spending sectors holding up inflation should have the ACCC and government crawling all over them, senate enquiries - throwing the kitchen sink at them, but NO as we have a terrible government nothing is done.

The government is responsible for preventing and charging those who are price gouging, but they do nothing. We pay them to do that, and prevent fuel price gouging, and reduce monopolies and so on, but they do zip zero nada. Government is useless.
