Your friend doesn't sound very bright. Then again, I was watching CNBC this morning and two of the hosts were aggressively cheering for government censorship online. The third host and the guest being interviewed were understandably horrified. IMHO the core problem is naive people assuming "disinformation" = obviously false statement of facts, when in practice it means anything that makes the government/ruling class look bad. The suppression of vaccine injury information has been a stunning success for the disinfo police. Yet even mentioning potential downsides will immediately get you accused of believing all sorts of things that have nothing to do with the facts of that situation. The pandemic broke a lot of people's brains.

@AltairEgo1
@AltairEgo1 Жыл бұрын
Yep, it is a form of cenorship. Even DMCA takedowns are a form of censorship. The only exception I think, is videos that endanger people, stuff like doxxing others, a call to hurt someone, CP, etc. Everything else is fair game, regardless of politics. No one should be silenced.
@vaspeter2600
@vaspeter2600 Жыл бұрын
I mean, demonetization itself isn't an issue. Advertisers don't want to give their name to any content equally, and I don't think you can fault a company simply for prioritizing things that actually make money for them over things that don't. Issues pop up when A) demonetization happens for political reasons or B) the financial incentive to demonetize certain things comes from somebody whose goal is to push a political agenda through it. And for the record, this isn't even touching on actual hate speech and the likes which should never be defended with a muh-free-speech rhetoric.

I just hope you read this and know that you made my day and that your honest, direct, and no bullshit approach truly matters and it's people like you who stand up for what they believe in and have the heart to voice their opinion and spread the word that our government doesn't have our best interests in mind and that we need to stay vigilant NOW or we will lose fucking everything we hold dear. I wouldn't combat misinformation. What people should be doing is learning to draw their own conclusions based on research. My dad taught me this when I was 5. He took me to a cemetery and showed me a grave that had my name on it. He told me that it was my other half that was born with me and he didn't survive. I was deep in thought about it on the car ride home, but something didn't feel right, so I asked to go back. After seeing the date of 1963, I knew he was full of it. It was my uncle who died young, and I'm just named after him. My dad's point was to not believe everything you are told and draw your own conclusions no matter who you get the information from.

The best way to combat misinformation is to find multiple sources, possibly multiple sources squared, and collate all of their sources and disregard the polished ones from authors with letters. But the way I do it is to stay off of social media, this is the only one I'm on. Then watch people like you and check out the things you say, the people you talk about, and then the people they're whining about. Kinda like how I found you thru the Unsubscribe Podcast, via Wendigoon. This used to be commonplace practice. It is only recently that people have become so caught up in their own opinions, they're absolutely unwilling to even entertain the idea that someone has a single good point while being on the opposing side of an issue. My theory is that the internet has made it way too easy for people to find echo chambers and fill them up with likeminded people. They're no longer forced to argue their own side of the issues, but instead just sat there going "I'm so glad I'm not the only reasonable person in this world." Well, that and this whole idea that children shouldn't experience anything bad in their upbringing at any point. If the kids never learn to deal with opposition, they will never learn to look past it and work together to achieve something.

@@ithuhalinqua1026 Ehh, there were plenty of echo chambers in pre social media real life back then. If you shared the majority held opinion, then you were in an echo chamber. Except instead of a dank little basement, it was town hall. Widescale civility only really existed through mob rule and repression of dissenting opinions. Discourse was only polite so long as it didn't offend the sensibilities or threaten the power of those who belonged to the ingroup. The internet merely leveled the playing field for all the people who would've just been told to fall in line with the majority. The tribalism and vitriol was always there. We can just see it a lot clearer now. In order to meaningfully listen to opposing opinions, a person must desire the truth, to be right even if it means their previously held opinions are proven wrong. Most people only care about feeling like they're right and will protect their sacred cows to the death. Apologies if this rant was a bit too cynical.

It is only recently that people have become so caught up in their own opinions, they're absolutely unwilling to even entertain the idea that someone has a single good point while being on the opposing side of an issue. Yup, and it's arguably because of a single sentiment that got popular, then gutted to warp the main point, then recirculated as if the warped version is the true one. That sentiment being "It doesn't matter if you're right, if you're an asshole about it." Once that started circulating, people started chopping off the "about it" part to change it to "it doesn't matter if you're right if you're an asshole," which in turn is interpreted as "It doesn't matter if you're right if I don't like you, because I don't want to give you the satisfaction of being right." They're the kind of people who could sit down with Hitler and Einstein to have a conversation about the laws of physics, listen to Hitler and Einstein agree, and deduce that both of them are wrong simply on the grounds that they hate Hitler and don't want to admit that anything that comes out of his mouth ever has even an ounce of validity (even if it has nothing to do with his problematic, racist worldviews).

Personally as a very big leftist, I always used the "is a private company they can do what they want" not as a threat, but as a warning. This is what a lot of people that believe that corporations and billionaires should have absolute freedom, but at the same time get mad when they get censored on social media. If a company wants to make money, and someone pays a lot to ban certain talking points in their social media, they will not think twice.

Defending corporations and governments is like defending your abusive partner's behaviour.
@louisvictor3473
@louisvictor3473 Жыл бұрын
It is worse. At least your abusive partner is still a human being, and some people use someone's wrong doings as "justificiation" to cross any morality and ethics lines with them, so it depends on context, what one is actually defending them from. Corporations and governments don't have that benefit, contrary to US law in some situations (silly country really), they're not people. Human rights, human diginity, it doesn't apply to corporations and governments themselves.

Actually one of the best reasons to study history is there are only so many lies, intriques, dirty tricks etc. Nothing new under the sun. Better to know the future by way of the past because the same $hit just keeps happening over and over. If it ain't in the history books it's in the newspapers.

The truth is, it's always been like that. The class of people with the most resources using them to force everyone else to do what they want. The foundational problem that the constitution was trying to fix with its 3 co-equal branches of government was the consolidation of power because concentrated power anywhere inevitably becomes corrupt.

That's not really the end of the run, though... Who peer-reviews the peer-reviewed science? Who teaches the teachers? All systems have such loop(hole)s. Free speech was never a given when using private platforms, of course if they don't like what anyone is doing that account will sooner or later be gone... The only alternative is as it has always been: to use _another_ platform for those disliked ideas.

You can do a lot of things, like knowing who owns and who backs the newsletters and sites where you read. You can learn about the subject to know if the news is doing obvious mistakes. You can learn about the writer of the story. You can apply a set of simple rules (like analyzing how the adjectives are being used, or if there is any fallacy). But ofc is not easy and most ppl don't want to put the effort in all that. However, if your family teaches those tecnics from an early age, it will be natural for you and you will be able to detect obvious misinformation with ease.

Yup same, I feel like this has been the move for a lot of people lately. Maybe I’m being a boomer but the internet has gone sharply downhill over the past 5 years or so. All the main social media sites are now over saturated with adds and “recommended posts” generated by their algorithms. It used to be a space created by and for the people, but now it’s just a curated experience designed to sell you shit products and shit ideas, with the revenue used to fund even more shit ideas like the metaverse and crypto schemes.

@@ElLapiz24 Interestingly, I feel like that was Google's original appeal as a search engine, and the reason they put all the other search engines to shame was it's simplicity and the fact you weren't bombarded by ads and links. Social media seems to be going the same way, if someone could come out with a simpler, cleaner free speech experience again without placing everyone in algorithmically directed echo chambers it would be fantastic.
