The Grand Canal is an impressive and awe-inspiring UNESCO World Heritage site. As the world's oldest and longest canal, it ranks among history's most impressive engineering feats! It connects the Yellow and the Yangtze rivers, running all the way from Beijing to Hangzhou near Shanghai, and it's not really a stretch to say that China as we know it would be markedly different without the Grand Canal! Let's investigate!

The two major cities at either end of the Mississippi River are New Orleans, and St Paul Minnesota. The distance between those two cities is 1,190 miles. China's Grand Canal is 1,104 miles, almost the same distance. Astonishing for a civil engineering project, that is still used today
@乐匠

As far as I know, the longest canal in the United States is the Erie Canal. As for the Mississippi River channel you mentioned. I think you're misunderstanding the meaning of a canal, which is a long, artificially dug waterway

@@乐匠 No No No. I'm fully aware the Mississippi River is natural, and not a man made canal. I was simply giving a comparison Americans could wrap their head around

North America needs one of these between Mexico and the US, just look at the prosperity that follows such cultural hotspots and shipping lanes, all we have currently is dispute and disdain with little hope of improving.

Very true! It's a tough one though, as the UK and France invested heavily in transport canals during the 18th century, but by the time they complete the projects, railways made them almost completely obsolete 😲 Thanks for watching 👍

Fun fact: the Grand Canal, as a government-led and -built infrastructure project, helped inspire the US's first big government-led infrastructure project: the Erie Canal, in the early 1800s. This would be a good fact to put into the backstory for your project. Good luck!

You should also mention that the original canal had pound and flash locks to raise ships going upstream or lower ships going downstream. Also, the Grand Canal, as a government-led and -built infrastructure project helped inspire the building of the Erie Canal in the US in the early 1800s.
