It'd have to be someone powerful and with alot of resources so Swain fits the bill, but there are many other people who would also fill that description like Vladimir. People think it's Swain because of all the crows in the show but you can't tell if they're Swain's ravens or just birds for symbolism. It all depends if she's on Swain's side or not. If so, then it might have been someone from the Black Rose. I like to think she's opposed to Swain and she needs Piltover's tech to fight Swain but who knows.

What I like about swain is that he is not the typical noxian "BIG STRONG MAN" stereotype, he's a strategyst a diplomat and a real warmonger. His ability to see the memories of others make him terrifying for the sheer power of intel in the right hands. He's ready to make any sacrifice or heinous action no matter the cost and has a right cause which makes him, truly, a great villain.

Swain's lore is really interesting but it doesn't exactly show how he got that demon hand but it probably has ties to the Mordekaiser rework lore. So here's Swain's lore summarized in case you didn't get some of the quotes (updated with TL;DR version below). Swain was born into a noble family of Noxus which held great power during the times of Boram Darkwill's rule since they represented the heritage and the country's strength. Although for some nobles this power just wasn't enough and they plotted against Darkwill in secret as a secret cabal named The Black Rose. Swain executed many of these traitors of them his own parents and eventually the mention of a "pale woman" reached Swain and made him question if he valued his house or his own people. The Black Rose sought power, "a shapeless voice cackling in the darkness of the Immortal Bastion. _something like a raven's caw._ For unmasking and executing Black Rose members Swain was commissioned in the Noxian Army and there he learned that Noxus was not strong because of it's army, rather it's power to unite people of all origin and race. All the same however "Swain found only darkness in the wake of each battle. _Clouds of carrion crows._ Swain gained his reputation in Shurima where he raised many Noxtoraa (Noxtoraa are gates of black stone that are a sign that Noxus has claimed the territory). However Swain eventually figured out that it was solely greed that drove the empire forward on these campaigns, Boram Darkwill's greed. In the invasion of Ionia Darkwill ordered warbands to search for any items rumored to extend a mortal lifetime, and with Swain's army scattered engaging in battle was suicide. In the Battle of The Placidium Swain attempted to lure the Ionian militia into a trap, however the Ionian's saw through this and Swain's warhost was overrun. "His veterans were routed, and Swain was gravely wounded, his knee shattered, Ionian blades cleaving through his left arm." As Swain lay there on the brink of death a raven came to feed, he felt an old, familiar darkness wash over him. But Swain couldn't let the darkness take him. As Swain looked into the eyes of the raven he saw the evil in Noxus. The pale woman, the Black Rose and the puppet emperor. Swain realized that The Black Rose was not defeated, they led him to what should be his death after all after seducing Darkwill. This was not glimpsed simply in the mind of a raven, no, it was something more and as he stared back he saw red eyes blazing in the dark. Swain was thrown out of the military for his failure and was now merely a cripple. Swain wouldn't live like this though he set out to find the power The Black Rose was after. It was an ancient entity that fed on secrets and to defeat it and claim it's power Swain saw what it could not, a way to wield it. Swain and his allies took many years to plan the overthrow of the "emperor" but it was only in a single night that they took Noxus. Unlike Darkwill Swain had a vision for the empire and that was strength and unity. Swain made the call for the soldiers to come home from Darkwill's unwinnable campaigns and he established the Trifarix which means that there would no longer be one soul ruler of Noxus but there would now be three, one who would embody Vision (Swain), one who would embody Might (Darius) and one who would embody Guile (unknown as of yet). Darius also established the Trifarian Legion, a mighty army of "the most loyal and prestigious warriors the empire could produce." Swain would now accept any who would join the empire even The Black Rose although he knows they still plot against him. Swain gathers knowledge as the demon did before him and Swain has seen dark threats to Noxus but "many Noxians wonder if the darkness they face will pale in comparison to the dark things Swain has done." Well knowing that the very very old Noxus Boss(so old it wasnt even named Noxus yet) Mordekaiser aka King of the Underworld is on his March to get back what belongs to him and he "gathered" many undead soldiers to build an army i think Swain is somehow trying to Hold against a "Thing" that even death failed to consume and if Swain fails to do so Mordekaiser will be taking all over Runeterra but thats just my opinion :D

Can't say it enough...Swains rework has captivated me more then any other Rework/Champion Release they've ever done. I mean honestly, you can't tell me League has a more captivating Villainous character then Swain (Except for maybe Mordekaiser, because I mean Jesus that man). The quotes, the stylization of Swains skins both in the splash art and in game, his abilities. I mean he's not longer a character that talks about being 10 steps ahead while he walks at you spamming laugh with R active. Absolutely beautiful rework, and quite possibly, to me at least, the best rework they have ever done.
