Horses come up to No 17, 'Goosander' jumps closely followed by 'Mr What'. They race neck and neck, jump, and continue neck & neck. LV 'Athenian' straddled over fence and his jockey pulls him through. GV Horses coming up to Beechers Brook, 'Mr. What' takes it slightly ahead of 'Goosander' and 'Pippykin' comes to grief. SV 'Pippykin' falls on top of Sydney Jones. LV Jockeys standing by ambulance. GV. Horses approaching canal turn, 'Mr. What' jumps ahead of 'Goosander'. GV Horses coming towards Valentines. GV 'Mr What' approaching last jump which he takes and stumbled but right himself. GV 'Mr. What' coming up to finishing post. LV Crowd.

Great nostalgic National names Mr What , Wyndburgh , E. S. B. Tiberetta and more , still wished they hadn t changed the old unsaddling enclosure , new one has no gravitas , no history .

Arthur Freeman would normally have ridden Athenian but the connections stuck with Derrick Ancil, having partnered him last year. Then Freeman was booked to ride Glenmade. When he was withdrawn three weeks before the race, he took Bob Turnell's offer to ride Vigor, only to get a call within a few hours to say the horse had gone lame. Then Stan Mellor got injured and Freeman was told he would get the leg up on Never Say When, but Mellor was unexpectedly passed fit the week before the race. Meanwhile Tom Taffe wanted his son Tosse to ride Mr What but the jockey was committed to Sam Brownthorn. Taffe waited until his sons mount appeared in the five day declarations before booking Freeman, who was now available due to Mellor being fit. Two days later Sam Brownthorn was withdrawn but Taffe stuck with Freeman whom I'm sure must have been expecting to lose the ride. As it was, Tosse Taffe rode the less well fancied Brookling.
