Matthew Perry was born in Williamstown, Massachusetts, to Suzanne Marie (Langford), a Canadian journalist, and John Bennett Perry, an American actor. His ancestry includes English, Irish, German, Swiss-German, and French-Canadian.
Perry was raised in Ottawa, Ontario, where he became a top-ranked junior tennis player in Canada. However, after moving to Los Angeles at the age of 15 to live with his father, he became more interested in acting. In addition to performing in several high school stage productions, he remained an avid tennis player. Perry ranked 17th nationally in the junior singles category and third in the doubles category. Upon graduating from high school, Perry intended to enroll at the University of Southern California. However, when he was offered a leading role on the television series, Second Chance (1987), he seized the opportunity to begin his acting career.
Perry appeared in the hit comedy film The Whole Nine Yards (2000), as the neighbor of a hit man, played by Bruce Willis. His other feature film credits included Fools Rush In (1997), Aren't You Even Going to Kiss Me Goodbye (1988), She's Out of Control (1989) and Parallel Lives (1994). He also co-starred with Chris Farley in the buddy comedy Almost Heroes (1998) and in the romantic comedy, Three to Tango (1999), opposite Neve Campbell. Perry resides in Los Angeles. He enjoys playing ice hockey and softball in his spare time.
Perry soon found the perfect project with a leading role in a new sitcom about a group of young men and women in New York City. Debuting in September 1994, Friends became one of the most popular television sitcoms of all time.
Perry played the witty and sarcastic Chandler Bing, who shared an apartment with an aspiring actor named Joey, played by Matt LeBlanc, and was a longtime friend of Ross, played by David Schwimmer. Completing the cast, Courteney Cox played Monica, Ross’ sister; Jennifer Aniston played Rachel, Monica’s roommate; and Lisa Kudrow played Phoebe, the kooky, offbeat friend to all.
On October 28, 2023, Perry was found unresponsive in his hot tub at his home in Pacific Palisades, Los Angeles, and was later pronounced dead at the age of 54. LAPD Captain Scot Williams said the "cause of death may not be known for some time, but at this point foul play is not suspected". The following day, the cause of death was listed as "deferred" by the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner's Office, pending "additional investigative steps".

I've had a crush on Matthew since I 1st saw him. I am heartbroken. I read his book and was afraid he wouldn't be with us much longer. I'm having such a hard time with this. Thank you for giving his fans some closure of our own! I think Matthew's passing is felt so deeply because he was one of our own. We all embraced him with good thoughts and wishes when we found out about his struggles. But we did that because we had loved him so very much as Chandler already. Thank you for sharing this with us. I just finished reading Matthew's book. The cemetery is beautiful. This leaves me with great sadness to think that he was such a great talented person with so many demons that he couldn't shake until the end of his life. Matthew believed in God. He had a surreal spiritual awakening while struggling to get clean and sober. His goal toward the end was to help people. I'm sure his book will help countless of people. I graduated from college in the Spring of 94....Friends came out that Fall so the show resonated with me as I was now in that post-college stage in life, trying to figure things out. Matthew once said that he pretty much played himself on the show. We saw his insecurities and his sarcasm and we liked him from the start, but we somehow saw some sadness within him. He was like someone we knew, our friend. I wish that he didn't feel such pressure to be funny and accepted. He was giving and kind, helping so many people with substance abuse problems.

It’s hard to imagine someone who we saw on TV since the 90s gone so quickly. It’s a pretty hard hit to see another beloved generation x member who was coming of age when Friends debuted in 1994 gone at the age of 54. My wife and I watched friends back in the 90s when we were in college. Matthew’s death represents something deeply sad. His character was funny, sarcastic and shined with young optimism. With his death our generation shines a whole less bright.

It was as a sad day hearing about Matthew Perry's untimely passing at such a young age. It is nice of you to visit his final resting place and share it with those of us who cannot do it in person and pay respects to a man who will always be remembered and loved by those he touched through his art and life. My favorite memory is when Eddie wouldn't move out and watched Chandler sleeping, so Chandler went across the hall only to wake up with Monica watching him sleep . His timing was perfect. Thank you, it's extremely sad.. he had come to terms with his life and showed that from his book he wrote. I've ordered the book, just have to wait for it to arrive.. Thank you for this. While there's no evidence right now that addiction was the cause, I had a friend from high school (I'm over 50 now) that looked spookily like Matthew Perry. He even used Perry's picture as his social media pic. He was always the life the party, so friendly, so caring, so funny! But he was suffering in silence. He passed away about 10 years ago from years of alcoholism that even his friends and family didn't realize how bad he'd gotten until it was too late. Grieving for Perry is like grieving for my friend all over again.

I think it's wonderful your donating the proceeds to something that was important to Mattie. He most certainly said friends isnt the first thing he wants to be remembered for when he dies but rather for helping people and would spend the rest of his life proving that. Sadly who knew it would be a year later that that would come to be. I think proceeds should go to an addiction and recovery program bc that was most important to him. May Matthew Perry rest in peace and so many prayers and love to his parents,siblings, and all who knew and loved and adored him. ❤😢
