THIS STORY:
The von Trapp Family was an Austrian singing family of the former naval commander Georg von Trapp. The family achieved fame in their original singing career in their native Austria during the interwar period. They also performed in the United States before emigrating there permanently to escape the deteriorating situation in Austria during World War II. In the United States, they became well known as the "Trapp Family Singers" until they ceased to perform as a unit in 1957. The family's story later served as the basis for a memoir, two German films, and Rodgers and Hammerstein's Broadway musical "The Sound of Music".

MUSIC:
MONETIZATION VOLUNTARILY TURNED OFF BY FOTF FOR THIS EPISODE.
Song 1 - "The Sound Of Music" the title song from the 1959 musical of the same name. It was composed by Richard Rodgers with lyrics written by Oscar Hammerstein II.
NOTE - This music is copyrighted and there is no way to get past this, so I have DEMONETIZED THIS EPISODE ON PURPOSE, mainly because I wanted to include this original score for the ending.
Any funds generated by KZbin for this episode only will go to the entity that owns this music, directly by KZbin.
THIS CHANNEL:
_________________________________________________________
The Angel face you see is the Haserot, named “The Angel of Death Victorious". The stoic angel is seated on the marble gravestone of canning entrepreneur Francis Haserot and his family. Holding an extinguished torch upside-down, it represents a symbol of life extinguished. Wings are outstretched and the gaze is straight ahead.
IN THE END, DEATH ALWAYS WINS. LEST THE FACES NOT BE FORGOTTEN...
This channel is focused on casually walking and viewing a handful of the thousands of forgotten names and faces at various cemeteries near and afar. Seeing their faces up close. And when able, telling the stories behind their names.
Most graves are unknown and lost to history.
Some are famous.
And some infamous....
....and some with tragic endings.
#Graves #Cemeteries #Death

Maria had a 3rd child, a son, named Johannes born in 1939. He returned to Stowe in late 70's to manage the Lodge. He was the sole heir of Maria's estate, after her death in '82. Last I knew, Johannes's son, was the manager of the Lodge.

When I was small I used to watch the movie. I would try to sing like Julie Andrews. I imagined myself running through the hills and fields. But I could never carry the tune and was always scolded by my parents for giving them headaches. But I love the movie and the songs...and once awhile I will still watch it. Thanks for transporting me back to my childhood for a moment 👧

Maria Von Trapp, one of the daughters: The family did not secretly escape over the Alps to freedom in Switzerland, carrying their suitcases and musical instruments. As daughter Maria said in a 2003 interview printed in Opera News, "We did tell people that we were going to America to sing. And we did not climb over mountains with all our heavy suitcases and instruments. We left by train, pretending nothing."

I live 7 miles from the lodge. This is nothing like it was 2 years ago. The garden was full of flowers. So full of flowers that it was difficult to see the grave sites. Because of the pandemic, I guess they could not keep the gardeners to tend to it and the gardens across the street. They never used to charge money to walk the grounds. So many things have changed.

I can see why they fell in love with their home in Stowe Vermont. Reminiscent of the mountains of Austria. When they made the movie Marie actually met Julie Andrew's. But if I remember correctly Maria wasn't completely happy with how the VonTrapp story was told in the movie. I would have to rewatch the documentary again. They also didn't escape over the mountains by walking. I think they took a train.

Thank you so much for sharing this. My husband, daughter, and I went there for a vacation and, sadly, Maria passed away a couple of days into our stay there. We were eating breakfast after we learned of her passing and saw the the family coming in to eat also. They had the movie, The Sound of Music, constantly playing in a room there at the Lodge so you could watch it anytime you wanted. Every evening during dinner they would have different musicians gracing us with beautiful music. It looks like they have expanded the Lodge since we were there and there were no tours(although I wish there had been.) Again, thank you for sharing this. It brought back bittersweet memories. We loved staying there, but were greatly saddened and surprised when they announced Maria had passed. We had no idea she was ill. It was nice to see some of the family's final resting places. I don't know if I'll ever get a chance to go back, but we have never forgotten the meaningful time that we spent there.

I was there, in the early '80ies. I was a truck driver, (owner operator), and was hauling a load of prefabricated steel to the Lodge. I was told that the original lodge had burned down and they were rebuilding with steel and (I think) concrete. I loaded the steel at a steel mill in the Chicago/ Gary In. area somewhere, I forget where, but the people there told me not to talk much because of my, somewhat, southern accent. And that the northern people there did not like southerners or people from the south. So when I got there the construction foreman ask me if I had ever been there before, and me trying to speak as little as I could, just said, "no". He started telling me that I had seen all this before. (He was showing me this large green hillside and field. He keep tell me that I had seen all this and I just keep saying "no, ain't been here". So then he ask me if I had ever watch the movie "Sound of Music", which I said "ok, yay". He started telling me that this is where, Julie Andrew, ran down the hill, tossing her bonnet singing, "the hills are alive with the sound of music". I said "ok wow". Now I have since learned that, that was not true, it was filmed in Austria. Not sure now what the truth is. BTW, It was a beautiful place, it was in the month of Aug. if my memory is correct, but I'm back where I belong, Kentucky and very happy with that. And also, I'm not the one that talks weird!!!

I think The Sound of Music, though not accurate on many of the facts about the real Von Trapp family, is one of the best movies of all time. (Georg was a kind-hearted man, not stern like the movie, for example.). The ending of this video left me teary-eyed! We went on a tour that included Salzburg in 2007, where the Von Trapp home and the nunnery is, and many scenes from the movie were filmed. We saw the mountain that Julie Andrews was standing on in that opening shot. Salzburg was also Mozart’s childhood home. It’s a fun and beautiful place to visit, but be alert - one of our tour mates had her purse snatched with everything in it! The scenery in Stowe is very beautiful!

I met the grandchildren of Werner (kirk)twice, they were in their late teens the first time I met them. They use to travel all over singing all the songs, their are three girls and one son. They sing so beautifully!! I met them at Yankee Candle in MA. they would come once a year in November.I bought their CD and they all signed it, they were all so nice and very friendly answering all your questions about the family. I too love the movie so it was such a treat to meet the great grandchildren of Maria!! Thank you for this video I love Vermont it’s so beautiful, I’ve always wanted visit Stowe Vermont and see their home and the beautiful lodge.

One of my all-time favorites ❤. Maria was in the Sound of Music movie. You only see her for a few seconds but there she was. Use to make a game of naming all the children in order.

I had the pleasure of staying at the Von Trapp Family Lodge about ten years ago and it was one of the most incredible experiences I've ever had. It was such a moving experience (especially as someone who grew up watching the Sound of Music). Visiting the gravesite was something else altogether-I specifically remember standing over the captain's grave and to this day I don't think I can explain the things that I felt in that moment. At the time, their daughter Maria was actually still alive and lived right down the road as well. If I'm correct, she was the last surviving child of the original seven that were portrayed in the film. I really do wish I'd gotten to meet her-I believe she passed away about seven years ago.

Their great grandchildren grew up here in the Flathead Valley in Montana! They used to sing all over as The Von Trapp Children. They are amazing too. I'm not sure what they do now, last I heard the were in Portland singing more modern music. Their parents still have a place here in Somers.

Thank you for sharing the Von Trapp family story. I've seen the movie, and I was aware that it was based on a true story, but I didn't realize they resided in Stowe, VT. It looks as though Martina died giving birth to her daughter, Notburga. They share a death date, and Notburga was born and died on that day. Many of the Von Trapp family lived very long lives. May they all RIP!

I'm amazed at how many don't know the movie was based on real people and events. It was the very first thing my mother told me when I first watched it on TV. Don't know how it is in other countries, but in Greece is within top 5 films on TV during Xmas. So, I've fond memories of it, while having Xmas break from school.

One of your most beautiful videos. My family was fortunate enough to have owned a second home in the Green Mountains for almost 40 years. It is just breathtaking. I miss it.
