It was a one-season wonder and one of the great TV programmes of the era. I was in the sixth grade and watched it every Friday night. At the time I hated history. As a result of this program and my dad who practically forced me to watch it, thinking it would improve my grade in the the subject, I developed a love for history which remains to this day. I wish the powers that be would release the entire show on DVD or blu ray.

This series probably created more history majors than any other program on TV.

Great show. I remember watching it and loving the theme music. I remembered it note for note all my life although I haven't heard it again till today. Bravo, Richard Rogers.

The Great Adventure was a great series that I truly miss. I honestly believe we were a better people in the early 1960s because we took pride in our past achievements. This series illustrated the hardships our ancestors had to overcome in order to build a better world. They set an example for future generations to follow. Today so much opportunity and potential are squandered by those who would rather waste their time damning our history instead of studying and learning from it.

"The Great Adventure" aired in Sydney Australia at 7:30 on a Thursday night - right after Sgt Bilko. I loved the episodes. What made them great was that they were all about hardship and quite often - tragedy and the human spirit. Its a shame that these kind of shows are no longer made. All we get is sick humour with people putting each other down all the time.

One of the greatest series ever. Saw it when it first aired when I was ten years old and fired up a life long love of history. I wish I could see the episode about Rodger Young one more time.

The Great Adventure TV series was critically phrased throughout its 1st and only season on CBS. Some of the episodes were shown again during the summer of 1965. I remember the episode with Brian Kieth as the founder of the ASPCA. Good series.

Other episodes I remember - Jack Klugman as John Brown, Jackie Cooper in the CSS Hunley.

Six Wagons to the Sea with either James Coburn or Lee Marvin (can't tell which). He grows grapes on a mountainside so they'd ripen early and he'd get a good price. The railroad tries to jack up the shipping charges, he tries hauling them by wagon.

Hello! Please add The Hunley episode of The American Adventure to your channel. That episode was the premiere episode of the television series and made a deep and powerful impression on me. I hope that you'll add the whole series, and, not only The American Adventure, but also The Americans, about the first year of the American Civil War which was broadcast in 1961, the hundredth anniversary of the beginning of the Civil War, and the television series Profiles in Courage, based on the book of the same title which President Kennedy compiled and edited with his speech writer. Please reply and advise. Thank you for your attention and assistance, Phillip Jones!

Anybody notice who was the narrator? Russell Johnson - the professor of Gilligan's Island.

I remember that episode. I think I liked it better than the movie "Hunley" with Armande Assante (1999). I remember another episode with the strange casting of Peter Graves as Daniel Boone.

This series was one for only one season {on Fridays at 7:30pm(et)}. This was also one of Maggie McNamara's final acting appearances. She left Hollywood, and settled in New York as a "temp" (including a stint as a typist), before committing suicide in February 1978.

Barry, I've written CBS twice to get them to release the entire series on DVD. John Houseman was the Executive Producer of the series. Richard Rodgers wrote the music. There are currently four (?) on KZbin about the lives of: Sam Huston, Harriet Tubman, John Brown, and your recent find. Many Thanks.
