I was a tobacconist, and have been a pipe smoker and blender for 40 years. Sutliff was the go to tobacco for my components, and they were excellent tobaccos to use and smoke. And I was proud to use tobacco from such a storied US company. What STG has done is horrible I don’t have the words to describe this loss. Thank you, Sutliff. If there is some way to emerge from the ashes under a different name, I’ll be in line to buy your product. The tradition, history, and expertise will be sorely missed.

Enjoying the last bowl of this tin of eastfarthing. Got one left that I’ll cellar for a special time later in life.. but thank you Sutliff for this blend and the great memories attached to it. My late uncle introduced me to it. And think of him every time I light a bowl of it. Godbless and I hope all employees at Sutliff find a happy home somewhere new and continue to bring us great blends.

@ I just recently learned, that Samuel Gawiths “perfection” is an even better substitute for frog Mortans Cellar. I haven’t purchased any myself yet to see if that’s true. But I did see comments saying it needs just a little stoved Virginia about 10% to get the mouth feel Right

Thanks for sharing the Sutliff excerpt from your movie. It, unintentionally, turned out to be a nice tribute. Oh how quickly the US tobacco business landscape has changed since you started your documentary project. Nothing new for STG. STG wiped out 125 years of Lane and now 175 years of Sutliff.

Hearing that Sutliff is not only being shut down, but their entire production capability being destroyed to prevent other Americans from carrying on the legacy is beyond infuriating and beyond disrespectful to the American tobacco smoker. It’s devastating to see how disposable our way of life is to European corporate greed. This video was excellent. You have a talent for shining light on the parts few see or consider. Thank you for the history lesson and the production value. It is my solemn hope Americans will rebuild what has been mismanaged and finally lost, but I have to admit I am not optimistic given the corporate sabotage on full display with this merger purely meant to destroy, not create.
@lakelandpiper84002 күн бұрын
"Our way of life" is destroyed by our own corporate greed. How many American companies shifted our jobs to foriegn countries all in the name of corporate greed. If we have no problem selling out our own why be surprised when other countries do it to us. Even if they would not destroy the equipment of Sutliff who do you suggest has enough money to take that equipment and start a business with the over regulation in America concerning tobacco? Sutliff and MacBaren put themselves into this position. We all know that if everyone of us was running STG and saw a chance to take out a competitor we would do the exact same thing.

Good stuff Adam. I thought we would have time to stock up before they shuttered the doors. Most of the blends that I enjoy are made by small producers that got their components from Sutliff. I wonder if there is anyone left that can provide base tobaccos for small batch blenders and tobacco shops.

All of us pipe smokers owe a debt of thanks, companies like Sutliff and Macbaren for their legendary cotributions to the hobby. Having said that I must point out that especially in the example of Sutliff they shot themselves in the foot numerous times in the past 20 years or so by flooding the market with dozens if not hundrreds of new blends which for the most part were very repetitive of one another. Having capitalized on a whole new generation of enthusiastic pipe smokers the vast majority of whom were chomping at the bit to try every new "cherry glop", creme brulee or black cordial flavored tobacco, and then came to their senses and moved on to blends with some natural Virginia or English flavor profiles instead of offering a few new natural blends, Sutliff kept turning out more and more highly infused aromatics I assume to continue capturing the new smoker market and quickly had a grossly bloated inventory which could not possibly be profitable. In walks STG and the rest is history, Why is STG keeping 4 of the most highly aromatic blends in the bulk stable? Simply because they are intent on continuing the practice of milking the market of new , aromatic loving pipe smokers until that market is exhausted, and it will happen eventually, this industry goes through very substantial economic booms and downturns. Just take a look at the Tinderbox Tobacco franchise stores from the 1970's, by 1985 there were over 135 stores in the chain, by 2014 there were about a dozen left. Again thank you Sutliff for your legendary contributions to the hobby, sadly you were the victim of some very poor decision making in the past few years.

sad to see Sutliff go, a real american icon and tradition. For now, at least we still have Cornell and Dehil to fall back on for american made pipe tobacco.....now if only they would offer more bulk options to a large swath of their popular tobacco blend porfolio, the world would be alright for a little while longer and remain STG free, cause everybody knows STG is where good quality tobacco lines go to die from a thousand "efficency" cuts.

@@ghostrider564 the health issues and nonsense of scare tactics are slowly going away here. Most folks realize that the main interest was control, not health. The younger generation is hungry for old and slow times and pipes are an avenue that seems to be picking up a lot of interest as of late. With the loss of Mac Baren and Sutliff, the world is ever closer to losing the entire pipe tobacco industry. So sad when an old family business is sold and shut down.
@walkermott17503 күн бұрын
STG is so short sighted with this move. With the shutting down of Sutliff and Mac Baren as a whole it'll force smaller places to shut down. Without access to these stores less people will get into pipe smoking and from there less people will purchase from the STG brands. A monopoly does not work when the industry you control is being strung up by aggressive regulation. The only way STG comes out on top is if they just re-open it under a different brand/name or if they are planning on moving their group and farms to the US. Hedging their bets on EU regulation is possibly the worst business move I have ever scene, the UK has literally announced that they plan to totally ban smoking - in all forms- within the decade. I don't really want to blame the family that sold to STG because why would they ever even humor the idea that STG would just nuke one of their biggest sources of returning consumers. Not only on the sense that access will now drop, but also in optics. This just looks really really bad, especially without explanation or forewarning that wasn't in industry emails.

@GetPipedКүн бұрын
@@rickytapp3990 cigars are profitable and pipe tobacco is very much not so. Sure it technically is, but to a company like STG, pipe tobacco is the lemonade stand out front that the girls are working. Cigars, snuff, and nicotine pouches are the 9-5 that “pays the bills and pays for the nice house and cars.” Purchasing and scrapping these pipe tobacco brands is a slow initiative that wasn’t designed to own a second lemonade stand, but rather to close up the other two lemonade stands that were competing. Now, we can all get lemonade from one stand in the neighborhood, or we can pick up the profitable cigars, snuff, or nic pouches
