Bill is missing the context of when and why Hello/Goodbye was written. The Beatles had released Sgt Pepper in Jun 1967 and had all grown mustaches. They were no longer the four mop tops singing She Loves You. They had, in fact, created a new persona and a lot of fans were dismayed and didn't understand. Some wrote them off as "weird" and asked why didn't they stay the same as they were. They got fan letters saying you guys changed. Paul McCartney wrote the next Beatles single as a song of duality. Yes/No, Hello/Goodbye... "I don't know why you say Goodbye , I say Hello". Watch the video for Hello/Goodbye and see the Beatles waving circa 1963 in their Pierre Cardin collarless jackets reflecting that "We are still the Beatles... but we've changed".

@glenndespres5317
@glenndespres5317 3 ай бұрын
I had to research that statement because to me, CCR is or should be a top rated band and I know that many of my era agree. But, according to some criteria, the fact that they had so many hits that reached #2 but not #1 and that other bands ‘overshadowed’ them, does support the claim. It just sounds ludicrous to me to hear anyone call them underrated. I don’t know anyone who doesn’t love their music!

It was Steve PERRY! I freaking couldnt believe it was just him and me in this isolated part of the stage. I talked about the possibilty Journey reunion( pre R&R Hall of Fame) and how much I loved his mad vocal skills. But I clearly remembered telling Steve Perry how much I also loved Freddie Mercury and John Fogerty. Steve lit up!! He said John is fabolous songwriter and tune finder! With Northern Songs, the Beatles had a share of the publishing. About 40%. But they dud not have a controlling interest. However, it's hard to say they got screwed. No, Paul was against using Beatles songs in advertising. Period. He's OK with licensing them for film, however. I think George and Ringo are a little more lax on this point. George had licensed one of his own songs for a commercial and Ringo had appeared in commercials. Paul had advised MJ to get into music publishing. He did NOT advise him on what to do with the songs he purchased. MJ had already used his own songs in commercials, sometimes altering their lyrics to suit the product, so he was planning to monetize the Beatles songs regardless. Paul was quite upset about Revolution being used for Nike, but his main beef was that he didn't get a break on licensing fees to play his own songs live.

Funny that Fogerty mentions his anger over Nike appropriating "Revolution." Because I've always thought one of the most egregious misuses of a song was when Wrangler jeans played the "Fortunate Son" lyrics "some people are born, made to wave the flag, oooh that red white and blue," over images of an American flag. They conjured a patriotic sentiment, but stopped the song before the "that aint me."

I believe at the end Lennon was a but frustrated with McCartney’s child-like lyrics at times despite his incredible melodies. That’s why together they worked so well and also explains the direction of their different solo careers.

Until the Help! album, I’m not sure if the Beatles (or at least Lennon/McCarthy) wrote a single song that wasn’t about girls/women/dating/ relationships and “love”. So that’s their first 2-3 years plus the covers. The Help! album had the title song which was Lennon talking about his stresses and need for help and McCartney had Yesterday. From then on (around 1965) the Beatles went to the different places lyrically but even the next album Rubber Soul went back to a lot of songs about women and relationships.

I saw other girls move up, and they were slutty anyway. Bill’s podcast has really turned me off him. He just talks over every guest with his uninteresting and often patchy pontifications with the most condescending cadence on US media. Unwatchable unfortunately.

I really enjoy the music of the Beatles, however, I wise person who knows music like myself, knows they were both underrated and overrated at the same time. Seriously listen to bands like the Stones, Zeppelin, Floyd, Sabbath and later Halen, police,

Once again truth flies over the head of Lil Billy Maher.. " HELLO GOODBYE" is a significant song. Hello BILLY SHEARS.. Goodbye PAUL McCartney.. READ "Memoirs of Billy Shears " Then Laugh at yourself for being soooooo gullible. As the Beatles screamed at all of US thru out many songs to "LISTEN UP" !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Bill's knowledge and appreciation of popular music or film is pretty superficial, not much different from a random person on the street. Thus, he has some pretty random opinions. I think he once opined that Bill Joel had more "good" songs than the Beatles. Much like your younger sister, he is not a good source for musical insight.

Bill Maher told Jerry Seinfeld that "Strawberry Fields Forever," "Hey Jude," "Penny Lane" and "I Want to Hold Your Hand" were never on any Beatles albums until the songs were released on compilations. Bill Maher's ignorance is matched only by his arrogance.

Actually, "Revolution" is quite musically pedestrian--just a blues rip-off. "Come Together" is also quite pedestrian. The music of The Beatles benefited enormously from the addition of numerous session musicians, George Martin's arrangements and production, and, quite crucially, the great sounds that engineer Geoff Emerick figured out for them (e.g., he got a huge bass sound for Paul by rewiring a speaker to turn it into a microphone). John Lennon's nonsense lyrics are a great deal more interesting and entertaining than his overly earnest efforts. John Fogerty is very lucky that he has Bill Maher here to tell him exactly where it's at. Perhaps Fogerty will try to write some songs and attempt to make his mark in music. Meanwhile, Bill has it all figured out--case closed!

Bill Maher is completely your cringe friend who doesn’t have a clue, cos he wasn’t there, when talking to someone who actually was… I mean, really… The lyrics of “Hello Goodbye” can be discussed as an observation of Paul McCartney’s dualistic, Gemini mind, the harmony swoops or that it featured a Bside which represented the hilarious cynicism of Lennon’s mind… I get the same feeling when listening to Howard Stern talk
