I have never understood the hostility toward Esther Summerson. It seemed pretty clear to me that she had been a victim of emotional abuse. Was she really expected to get over such trauma, so quickly?

It may be that ESTHER reserves her love for those in need of love; she may not ‘exude’ self love, as she feels she is not in need of that sort of love... she is a rather strong, independent person making the best of her circumstances.

I think that outside socialism we could start by reforming the legal system. that's what made the difference between 19th century and today: creating minimum wage, making child labor illegal and so on.
