But here! the acting, the timing, the directing and the costumes - are all spot-on. Oh I agree, his Tom Baker is famous. Perhaps i should have said that his Pertwee was the most surprising. I actually think it's more of an achievement getting Pertwee right, because providing you've got the vocal cords for it, Tom's voice is relatively easy to imitate. Pertwee's is much more subtle.

I’m sorry, but this simply won’t do. As ever, Jon Culshaw’s voice is spot on. He overdoes the mannerisms, because parody demands this. It’s meant to be an impression, an impersonation, not an exact copy. And he does that bit perfectly. However...... what Jon fails to render in this act, is the underlying sense of melancholy in Tom Baker’s performance. Jon had me in stitches. Tom, on the other hand, had me in tears. You can sense his regret at playing his defining rôle for one last time. So much water under the bridge. Playing a character he no doubt hated at times, because it stalled his tv career. It was a rôle that became bigger, even, than his enormous presence. Tom, who could have become one of the greatest and best known actors of his generation, was barely seen once he left The Doctor behind. But there’s no bitterness in his portrayal of an old man who now confronts his young alter ego. Sadness. Regret. A wistful longing for the chance to do things differently. All of these are left aside by Jon Culshaw. For someone like me, who grew up watching Tom Baker as a child, the poignancy runs deep. I, too, have grown older. I, too, have regrets of missed opportunities. I, too, remember Tom’s era as The Doctor as a happier time. Maybe it’s not Tom’s sadness I see in the original scene, but my own. But I think it’s Tom’s as well......
