I always thought the opening slapstick of The Great Dictator was more remenisent of the Three Stooges (classic line-up) than Chaplin. I could see Curly Howard in that chased-by-a-bomb scene.

Not always that clear. Example Germany in ww2 had a "tank" that fired 380mm shells. Those were counted as Missiles, because they had two stage launching mechanism.

It's based on the so called Paris-Geschütz, or paris-gun, which was used by the germans in WW1,and had a range of 100 kilometers and more, But the 80cm schwerer gustav was even bigger, and also used from the germans in WW2.

The hilarious thing is; most of these things have happened in actual combat: an outhouse was destroyed in the Falklands War, duds dropping off the muzzle of mortars happen frequently, etc....though usually the crews are running in the other direction when that happens!
