A classic scene of cinema, Chaplin's dance with the globe.

There's something so hauntingly beautiful about this scene. Chaplin just have an elegant flow about him and the music is equally elegant. It really does represent the narcissistic command Hitler must've felt prior to WWII and how he felt he could control the world. Chaplin was truly a master well a head of his time.

The music is a prelude by Richard Wagner. A racist and antisemitic composer who had died before Hitler was even born, but whose works were, and still are, adored by the Nazis.

Claude Chabrol once described that scene as a masterpiece of cinematography! So many dictators dream about ruling the world, imagining in their dreams the easiness of it, and then, in the end, they get nothing!"

Chaplin was so much more than just an actor. He was brilliant with whatever he did. He wrote scripts, he filmed, choreographed. made music, acted - and he did all that exceptionally well. Honestly, I dont think words are enough for Charlie Chaplin.

This scene is so beautiful but also devastating. Beautiful is what Chaplin does. His movements with the globe, the dance like play with the ball. It is so incredible to watch. Devastating is what his character is doing. It just shows how much the Dictator cares for the world. He wishes to play with it, and do as he pleases with it. Eventually, just like the end, Dictators destroy the world.

Everytime I see the ending of "City Lights" I cry so hard. That scene when the girl realizes the Tramp was the rich man who paid for her surgery just chokes me up. Chaplin was a true genious who showed us the best of humanity through his art. And I will love him forever.

He was no communist, but he was a socialist and against capitalism. And he was hurt, not by the accusations (he spoke out strongly against the communist trials), but by the stifling of artistic creativity that was part of totalitarian McCarthyism.

It´s from the overture of Richard Wagner´s opera "Lohengrin". It´s about 9 minutes long and builds up to a dramatic climax, then fades away like it started. Check it out if you haven´t heard it yet, the sheer beauty makes my eyes water every time I listen to it. ;) Wagner really revolutionized classic composing by pieces like this.

I have to tell my Charlie Chaplin story. I was on Netflix and bored, so i decided to look up Charlie Chaplin and watch his movies and short comedies because i hadn't seen any before and wanted to educate myself on them. I thought he was hilarious, but I didn't fall in love with him until i was folding laundry and watching a movie on the holocaust and they had a short part about this movie where they showed this scene. I fell head over heels in LOVE with Chaplin and haven't been the same since.

No tricks. No gimmicks. No CGI. No trick photography of any kind! & if you notice, very few cuts, too! Just a simple dance of a very graceful man w/ a balloon filled w/ human breath to sound of light strings. All of this poetic beauty to symbolically & humorously portray a deranged man who tried so desperately to have the "world in the palm of his hands" only to loose it all in the end. What a sight to behold! {{{{^_^}}}}

Charlie helped push a second front in Russia, Visited Churchill regularly, sold war bonds ... and made the biggest joke about Hitler ... and we still banished him from return (Not even to his face! waited till he was on a boat and halfway to England!) ... Chaplin's dance troupe experience and stage timing defiantly show here! great clip.
