The Great Divide Mountain Bike Route July 2024 / GDMBR / Days 27 to 31 episode 8 - Through the Great Basin from Pinedale to Rawlins
#BIKEPACKING #GDMBR #greatdivide
Day 27 - Left Pinedale after a nice productive rest day but somewhat of a non rest. Made it to Lander Creek for the evening. Met Chip & Lynn along the way .
Day 28 - Stopped at the rest station for water and coffee with Chip & Lynn then to South Pass to Atlantic City and on to Diagnus Well for an evening of solo camping.
Day 29 - Dan from Boston and SF rolled into the well as I was packing to leave. Made it to the Reservoir but did suffer from heat exhaustion.
Day 30 - Onward to Rawlins and again had issues with not drinking enough water. The Econo Lodge in Rawlins has a deal of $68 plus tx for a room for bike & backpackers
Day 31 - rest day in Rawlins.

Great video story. I have worked the Great Divide Basin, and the sun is deceptive. Few riders realize the elevation effect at 6500-7500', and it wears on you. I live and ride in Wyoming and would like to put together a large loop of the Red Desert and Great Divide Basin. Putting together the water logistics is the biggest challenge. Decades as a hiker in the Rockies and Northern Plains, cow water is a way of life.

@@sagehiker I think you’re right and would know. I didn’t fuel properly and drink enough water even though the temperatures were deceptively comfortable. Both days I was affected. Thanks for the comment it’s very important information!

I can relate to your exhaustion when you got to Rawlins. I was cooked too. We camped about 6 miles before South City and rode to the A&M Reservoir in one day then on to Rawlins the next. Probably the most worn out I got on the whole trip. I was lucky to have had a riding partner with. I'm wonder if it was you who stopped to talk to us as we sat down alongside to road in the basin having a snack.

@@b.k.2974 that would be a hard couple days for anybody. I don’t think that was me

Lovely reminder of this section👌. We were a day behind you throughout the basin, camped in the same spots too. I think the itinerary for this part worked quite well. We'll see you on the road out of Rawlins 😊

@@nickroden I think we got lucky with the Basin based on what I herd the winds & temps could have been.

@@socaljoe I agree. You're incredibly exposed out there. I'm just glad it didn't rain. I wouldn't want it any hotter though, maybe if I'd swapped Norway for southern California my heat tolerance would be a little different ;)

Great stuff! This question is for anyone who wants to answer: On average, how many hours/days does it take to cross the Basin?
@socaljoe
@socaljoe 13 күн бұрын
I was probably average. One of the guys I was riding with earlier took I think 4-6 days because he enjoyed it so much and took his time

Man, you don't know how lucky you were not to have had GALE FORCE winds. My friend and I hiked through that area on the CDT. Winds were gusting up to 50mph....for DAYS. Like most long distance hikers, I'm working my way into BikePacking. One question: When you go into a grocery store, what do you do to leave your bike parked outside? (That could be a video by itself...how to keep from getting your bike from being stolen while BikePacking) With my backpack, I just take it off and put it in the shopping basket. I'm NEVER more than arm's length from by backpack. With a bike, even if they can't steal the whole bike, there are like 6 bags that they could just walk off with.

Yes! You are right I feel I was very lucky with the winds. As for the grocery store stops yes there are dedicated videos on that subject. But basically you have to be smart about where you lock the bike and the area. If you’re with another rider that obviously works. I’ll try and lock it where I can see it or near the entrance and/or high traffic area so the hope being someone would stop a thief and it’s more about stealing the whole bike not just the bags.

I’ve literally walked my bike through the store and when one store manager asked me not to I told him I had a bike stolen and he let me continue.

It appears that you're editing these videos from home after the ride was over. How many Terabytes of storage did that take?
