Sounds a bit lite LCD Soundsystem but without the synths and James' strange vocals lol this is awesome!

Dbx off! Condenser mic on snare pointing to the center, Kick mic looking in the hole, mono overhead looking down at the ride/tom. bass is a nice semi hollow greco running through a limiter then to tascam 388. Oh and I didn't do this for this recording but I now know the print bright and then cut some brights while mixing for good highs with minimal hiss.

Old people grew up with tape hiss on albums. We actually miss the tape hiss if it’s not there. 😂

Thanks so much for posting these 388 videos. They give me a chance to relive the great times I had with mine (until I did one of the top-ten dumbest things in my life and sold it; with plans to move on to a bigger board and one-inch tape machine, which was unnecessary as the 388 did all I needed and the bigger studio never came to reality.) (Better make selling my Tascam 388 as one of the top three dumbest things I’ve done in 65 years.)

Reminiscent of stuff like Return To Forever, Jan Hammer Group, or 70's era Herbie Hancock. This is brilliant! I was given one of these machines a few days ago and wasn't expecting it would be capable of audio quality such as this. Mine needs some work but this has really got me motivated.

I keep seeing comments on keeping the Dolby turned off. The 388 utilises dbx and sounds fantastic with it engaged, with tape hiss reduced dramatically, top end crispness intact. This is not a cassette and does not have the boxy sound associated with them. I own two of these machines and if kept properly aligned, they will not be lacking before the artist lacks. When tracking at 7.5 ips, it's all about the buttery richness of the bass. Not icy digital top end.

Nowhere Man. The negative side effects of DBX relate to bass tracking and modulation noise errors not high end. DBX also doubles freq response errors so a spec of + or - 3 dB becomes + or - 6 with DBX engaged. DBX sucks and that is the problem with all small format analog.
@JohnnyNowhere4 жыл бұрын
@@kurtfoster3640 With an overall dynamic gain of 30dB in signal to noise, you'd have to be Superman to hear the difference you've outlined. Slight pumping might be the only thing that a good set of ears would pick up. The good far outweighs the bad in this respect, but you've a right to your opinion. I'll keep my DBX.

@BrothersNylon6 жыл бұрын
for this one I was using these old dbx soundfield speakers with a sony audio receiver but now I'm using the Yamaha HS-5. Also this was when I just got the machine so I found a local guy who sold old 70s 80s radio show tapes and I was using them. They sounded really hissy and vintage but later found out they were "sticking" which is bad for the tape heads.
@jamesflowers8746 жыл бұрын

If you have a Dolby option on your tape player, leave it off! It kills the high end in the mix and obscures the spirit voices.
