Simply one of the most amazing vocal tracks ever laid down for an album. Now that I'm 62 years old, it brings tears to my eyes to hear it, and no other song does that. I wish there was a way to tag her in this comment so she could know what an impact her performance has, half a century later.
@markaspiazu Жыл бұрын
I completely agree. To quote myself on another comment: I always get a tear when listening to this. I feel it's so important to hear it alone in a quiet place. I imagine a woman dealing with death- maybe of a child? And I go through all of the anger and extreme sadness with her on this ride. And then it ends as quietly as it begins.

Talk Callas or Caruso, or if you are culturally bankrupt you'll talk Pavarotti, all you want: Clare Torry vocally triangulates to the extent humanly possible. Second to none is Linda Rondstadt. And by "second to none," hell yeah Rondstadt can do ANYthing, make no mistake; it's just that Clare Torry did it first when she did The Great Gig In the Sky. Could Callas or Caruso do what Torry did? That's a trick question: back in the days of Callas and Caruso, the human race had not yet been introduced to the likes of Pink Floyd. How unfortunate. Could Rondstadt have done what Torry did? Again, another trick Q: of course Rondstadt could have pulled that off - it's just that she wasn't in that particular circle at that given moment. When it comes to vocals, there are only 2 humans worth discussing: Rondstadt and Torry; Callas and Caruso couldn't pull off what Torry and Rondstadt have accomplished, yet that reality may be only because the human race had not - in the time of Callas and Caruso - yet found the potential for arts & sciences that Pink Floyd helped the human race to understand. When it comes to 50+ yrs later, I get you 9 ways to Sunday - and therein lay the beauty of a galaxy of gems.

Let's please not forget the creativity that Torry put into this. Apart from her voice, which is obviously amazing, she also had to improvise and was not given much input apart from just the background music presumably and on that basis she went onto create this. So there is a difference in just being given a song with a prescribed melody and some prewritten lyrics. Here she had neither. That is what is amazing.

She was a professional session singer, and I think that those singers need to be not only extremely talented, but extremely flexible and imaginative, to not only sing for a variety of styles, but to put themselves creatively into them, and make it believable. She said she started out backing the number with a lot of standard "... baby, baby" lyrics, and they said no, so she decided to treat her voice solely as an instrument, and this is what we got. Incredible.

Oh... do you allow me to add that she sings out all the tragedy of this world too? The pain, the pity for any genocide, for any kid died in the arms of his parents... of any bitterly broken heart too? She helps me to remember what counts in life... its a cry full of empathy.
@hectoralvarorojas19186 жыл бұрын
I am not a musician but, I understand and respect the fact that musical creations are interpreted differently by those who listen to them. Especially, the great creations. In my case, my interpretation of "The great gig in the sky" is more close to beauty and joy in the world than to pain. Then, I do more to the interpretation that delivers first Adelaide Ferreira. However, I also understand that joy and pain are closely linked concepts and the conception of one justifies the existence of the other. For me, this is part of the content of this work of art called "The great gig in the sky". Joy and pain in the same source of creation. A genius played brilliantly by "Clare Torry". As time goes by, I think that even “Clare” seem to doesn’t realize herself about the amazing beauty she was involved in. Her performance is just awesome!
