Simply one of the most amazing vocal tracks ever laid down for an album. Now that I'm 62 years old, it brings tears to my eyes to hear it, and no other song does that. I wish there was a way to tag her in this comment so she could know what an impact her performance has, half a century later.

I completely agree. To quote myself on another comment: I always get a tear when listening to this. I feel it's so important to hear it alone in a quiet place. I imagine a woman dealing with death- maybe of a child? And I go through all of the anger and extreme sadness with her on this ride. And then it ends as quietly as it begins.

I do too, but imagine that might have changed the dynamic and we wouldn't have had such immaculate vocal for the track. She was experimenting and self-consciousness may well have resulted if she felt observed as she stepped out on a limb.

Talk Callas or Caruso, or if you are culturally bankrupt you'll talk Pavarotti, all you want: Clare Torry vocally triangulates to the extent humanly possible. Second to none is Linda Rondstadt. And by "second to none," hell yeah Rondstadt can do ANYthing, make no mistake; it's just that Clare Torry did it first when she did The Great Gig In the Sky. Could Callas or Caruso do what Torry did? That's a trick question: back in the days of Callas and Caruso, the human race had not yet been introduced to the likes of Pink Floyd. How unfortunate. Could Rondstadt have done what Torry did? Again, another trick Q: of course Rondstadt could have pulled that off - it's just that she wasn't in that particular circle at that given moment. When it comes to vocals, there are only 2 humans worth discussing: Rondstadt and Torry; Callas and Caruso couldn't pull off what Torry and Rondstadt have accomplished, yet that reality may be only because the human race had not - in the time of Callas and Caruso - yet found the potential for arts & sciences that Pink Floyd helped the human race to understand. When it comes to 50+ yrs later, I get you 9 ways to Sunday - and therein lay the beauty of a galaxy of gems.

Let's please not forget the creativity that Torry put into this. Apart from her voice, which is obviously amazing, she also had to improvise and was not given much input apart from just the background music presumably and on that basis she went onto create this. So there is a difference in just being given a song with a prescribed melody and some prewritten lyrics. Here she had neither. That is what is amazing.

I love this woman for doing that. Whenever I feel it's hard to have faith in humanity, I remember that one day, Clare Torry did use her voice to record that. There has never been something like that, even close to that, in the history of music. This is one of a kind. Nothing is similar to that. Thank you.

Funny you should ask. The older I get (and I'm damn old - this debuted when I was a freshman in high schrule) the more I appreciate "The Floyd". I tought they were great then - but I also liked lots of top forties bands. This stuff, however, is more amazing-er the more I hear it; and Claire Torrie... OMG! By the way: She was a black chick until about 2010 or so when I saw an interview of her online. Imagine my surprise!

You havent listened to very much music! Listen the singers Yanni has, especially 'Deliverance', listen to Loreena Mckennitt's vocals such as the intro to 'The Mystic's dream' to name only one. Listen to Sheila Chandra. Im sure there are countless more! I am happy this tune has touched you so deeply, so irrevocably, and I dont wish to take that away. But you, just like myself, have only scratched the surface of all the wonderful music ever made! Its depth & breadth we couldnt imagine!

This was said of the legendary "Kind Of Blue" album by Miles Davis. I equate the two. Both iconic albums of the 20thCentury. Rick Wright was also influenced by Bill Evans (piano) on that record, so we have parallels there. When you are entering the realms of bliss the choice is easy - these two records. You need nothing else......

She was a professional session singer, and I think that those singers need to be not only extremely talented, but extremely flexible and imaginative, to not only sing for a variety of styles, but to put themselves creatively into them, and make it believable. She said she started out backing the number with a lot of standard "... baby, baby" lyrics, and they said no, so she decided to treat her voice solely as an instrument, and this is what we got. Incredible.

I am not a musician but, I understand and respect the fact that musical creations are interpreted differently by those who listen to them. Especially, the great creations. In my case, my interpretation of "The great gig in the sky" is more close to beauty and joy in the world than to pain. Then, I do more to the interpretation that delivers first Adelaide Ferreira. However, I also understand that joy and pain are closely linked concepts and the conception of one justifies the existence of the other. For me, this is part of the content of this work of art called "The great gig in the sky". Joy and pain in the same source of creation. A genius played brilliantly by "Clare Torry". As time goes by, I think that even “Clare” seem to doesn’t realize herself about the amazing beauty she was involved in. Her performance is just awesome!

Clare Torry tapped into something ancient and powerful that spoke through her. The most awe-inspiring excruciatingly soul-bending beautiful sound, transcending time and space as it hits your ears. 🙌🏻

First time I heard this song I played it again and again . For one brief moment in the day I was taking away from my troubles and worries of everyday life . I was caught in a sea of bliss that I didn't want to come off . My vision becomes blurry and my mind is full of wonderful thoughts. This is truly an angel singing .

I was 12 in 1973. Of course, Money was being played on the radio and my older sister got this album. I heard this song and thought how weird and kind of wanted to skip it for more traditional tracks like Money. After a few listens, I began to hear the magic of these vocals, abstract and so haunting. It wasn't long before I was putting on this album just to hear this track, one... more... time. Wow, just wow.

This has always been one of my all-time favorite Pink Floyd tunes. Clare’s “screaming in tune” is simply nothing short of phenomenal. NONE after her have ever come anywhere close to matching her.

I love Claire came in cold, only David Gilmore talking to her, him not wanting her singing any words and asking if she wanted to see the chord progression, she saying no, roll it and let's go. 2 full takes and here we have it. This song often haunts me while hiking, now nearly 50 years later. Damn you, David Gilmore!
