Good analysis, now we all know that Suraj's character is a Arrogant Idiot but let me be the devil's advocate here, what if I say there is a another (hidden) message or lesson in this movie. Do you remember there is scene in this movie where Nimisha's character say to Suraj's character that "she is not happy with their sex life" & Suraj's need to learn how to do "IT" correctly without causing her pain ??? So my question is if they had a good sex life will she leave him ? or still give it a chance besides his & his father's 1930s selfish passive thinking & behavior ??? Also would you agree with me if I say that Nimisha's character don't have or don't use any of "Women's Charms & Tricks" to change her husband's thinking & behavior ???

But when asked the little girl to join, the mother calmly tells she will have with me. Same at the end, when nimisha is at her maternal home telling her mom about the problem she faced, her younger brother walks in and requests water from his mother, then the mother tells the youngest girl child to fetch the water for him, that's when nimisha looses her calm and yells, "Can't you get it yourself".

As a malayali I feel so proud when you take the effort in watching our films and reviewing it. The film is really an eye opener for people who take the women in the family for granted. It shows the reality of the patriarchal society of Kerala. All these things still happen in many households. The same practices are still followed at my friend's place and the fact that amused me is she is very proud that her family still follows all these customs and the culture of Kerala is preserved. What nonsense.!!!!!1 The performances of the lead cast was so natural and convincing. Along with Nimisha and Suraj the father in law's acting was so good. For a moment in the film I just felt like slapping that old man. At the last scene of the movie when Nimisha applauded for herself I felt like the whole cast and crew behind this movie needs a loud round of applause.
@DahliaPlays3 жыл бұрын
All this is alien to me. My impression was always Kerala is an equal opportunity society for everyone. Sure women do most of the cooking and cleaning. But men also cut the vegetables, clean vessels etc etc. I e seen men serve food as well and it’s a very normal thing to do. maybe this is a nair thing as we have a matriarchal system and I was brought up outside Kerala.

@susanjames42263 жыл бұрын
@@DahliaPlays Hi Sachin, "Sure women do most of the cooking and cleaning." You said it - there lies the problem. I've seen many men cut vegetables, clean vessels - that's great. The question is 1) Will they proactively plan those meals? 2) Take responsibility for making sure the food is ready and served? More importantly, will they serve tea/snacks to guests? Be seen as the 'server'. Re: cleaning - that's the toughest and dirtiest job of all. So, yes, Kerala is great for women but only when it comes to professional ambitions. It's still the same old patriarchy when it comes to the humblest jobs in the household. So, women, like in many western countries (no, that's not a compliment), do the dreaded double-shift.
@DahliaPlays3 жыл бұрын
@@susanjames4226 1. Post this comment I’ve had great discussions with female relatives and apparently these traditions existed 50 years ago. So I was just being ignorant. Apologies. 2. Why is women cooking a problem while men cutting vegetables is great ? 3. Do men plan food? No. This is conditioning. If men were conditioned to do all this they sure would. 4. Men do serve guests as well. I have, men in my family and wife’s family have. Why is it a big deal ? Seems pretty normal. You see it all the time during social functions. 5. I try hard to not judge a culture. If a system works for a family it’s good. If it does not .. well it does not and they are not a right fit. There are no right or wrong answers here. If I start judging a system where people are happy together though they do not conform to my liberal views, then am falling into the same close minded trap that my grand parents were part of. I have made this mistake many times. 5. My only grouse with the film is it’s sneakily one sided. The wife did not complain or talk to her husband even a single time about her problems. Where is the educated modern woman here? Which era does this film belong to ? 5 decades ago ? What’s the point of it now ? But if many women identify with this, then I realize i have to reevaluate my assumption. 🙏🏻 I just assumed wrong or am being blind with bias or with my conditioning. The end shot clearly showed a political bias. Walking past traditions and into a future which seems leftist. That’s just sneaky. The communist philosophy is to always control.

I appreciate your decision to wash the plates you use! But that doesn't make any difference to the one in kitchen! That's just an etiquette which you are supposed to do even before watching this movie. There are more dishes rather than the plate you eat, the dishes to cook food and the ones which are used on the dine in table. Even if you washed the one you use, still these much of dishes are left. Who will wash those? So everyone has to take responsibility and share your work equally. Rather than dishes everyone should engage in the food making process as well. In addition everyone should share the work at home including laundry and so on. I know we are not used to do household work because we were raised in this patriarchal society. But the time has come! LET'S CHANGE!

Great review! Thank you for spotlighting this great movie. As a woman, someone who escaped very similar circumstances and is thankful every day, this movie was a painful watch but an important watch. I wish every Indian would watch it.

I noticed that the aunt is doing all same routine works with a smile in her face and without frustrated. BecoZ she less concerned that. That is the society and they think it should be like this . It wouldn’t be then 😲?

First of all you have to have a great taste in content to like South indian movies and actually understand the artistic abilities of this kind of real cinema and your explanation is so simple yet so superior , without using fancy jargons and interpretation to sound intelligent you explain n interpret the movies smoothly and clearly its just amazing to know your point of view keep up the good work 👏 🙌 👍 👌 😀

My mother taught me how to cook . So that you don't have to relay on anyone to do it for you and to ask the permission of the women and ask their opinion without forcing myself over them.

I believe in equality...having said that, after marriage even the husband has to leave his parents just like his wife has, have to include mother’s name too in their children’s, women shouldn’t be burdened to wear this (mangalsutra) and that , share household and children’s responsibilities equally, and so on, house guests being served by women, the particulars are endless, .......If men go out for work then women can do household chores but it shouldn’t be like that’s understood and taken for granted.....I’m a homemaker and do household chores not because I’m a woman but since I’m at home I voluntarily do them...it should be vice versa too that if a woman solely goes out and works then the man has to shoulder household responsibilities.....better if both work outside then both should do everything equally....
