Julian Edelman has an incredible story of evolving from an overlooked college quarterback to a Super Bowl MVP-winning NFL wide receiver, but despite his success over his career, the general opinion surrounding him as a player is a relatively mixed bag compared to other top talents in the league. This video breaks down the arguments for and against Edelman as a top tier receiving talent, and briefly touches on his case for the Hall of Fame that has bubbled up since his performance in Super Bowl LIII against the Los Angeles Rams.

Isaac Matthew Torres true but Tom Brady was a 6th round pick and we weren’t saying he was underrated/overrated Because of his selection lol and I think Edelman was underrated obviously but at this point in his career and where he gets picked fantasy lol I think he’s slightly overrated for his production and regular season but is one of the best playoff players ever lol it just sucks his team can make the playoffs without Edelman even playing a regular szn game lol so it’s hard to point out his value

I have had a great many Pats fans say he is the best receiver in the NFL and at no point in his career was that true. I mean he's really good and one of the best slot receivers but there are buts about him. Do I think he deserves to be in the HoF? Unclear as of yet and signs point to no. Although some guys have gotten into the Hall based almost solely on their Postseason performances and he has had a HoF postseason career. He's a conundrum but then thats why this video was made about him.

The problem I always have with people crediting the Patriots "system" for the performance of its players (including Edelman and Brady) is this: those who say that can never actually explain what the "system" is and why it's somehow more important than the players. And secondly, if this system is so awesome and clearly effective (who wins more than the Pats?) Then why doesn't EVERY team do it in a league often described as a "copycat league"? The fact they don't is a strong indication that you need certain types of players to run it.
@paulwilliams2024

The system is the reason why in the Divisional round of the 28-3 SB year, Brady can Complete 47.4% of his throws, throw 2 INT's, have a 68.6 Passer Rating and still win by 18 points (Pats beat same playoff team earlier in the year by 27 with Jacoby Brissett at QB)
@DieFlabbergast
@DieFlabbergast 5 жыл бұрын
The other teams don't have a Bill Belichick: they haven't yet worked out how to mass-produce him. That's why. You don't need "certain types of players," you just need a certain type of head coach.
@NicardoNeil
@NicardoNeil 5 жыл бұрын
None of you have answered the question: what is the system? And of course the easy (lazy) response from most people on this topic is usually WELL LOOK AT WHAT THEY DID WITH MATT CASSELL!!! Ok, let's actually look at that. Sure they still won 11 games. But that same team, with exactly the same players led by Brady, won 18 straight games the season before. A 7 game difference. Also, the offence was significantly better with Brady than without (from historically good to good enough). That matters guys. And of course you'll find one or two games where Brady plays bad and they still win. No one said Bill wasn't a great coach or that Brady was perfect. But look over the course of a whole season or the whole 20 years of this run and you see that Brady is just as critical to this "system". Bill himself says it: PLAYERS win games. Doesn't matter what the "system" is.

He's only been a full time receiver in 13, 14, 15, 16, and 18, so it isn't particularly fair to to judge him based off of when he was barely getting any playing time. Reminder that Lynn Swann never had a 1000 yard season.

@Sho Tohara Stanley Morgan, Charlie Joiner, Don Maynard, James Lofton, Art Monk, Steve Largent, Paul Warfield, . All of these players were in Swann's era, and they were all better than he was. Theres a lot of slot receivers that dont line up outside the numbers frequenly because they get their work done in the slot. For example, Micheal Beasley, Randall Cobb, and even Cooper Kupp who sadly went down with an injury last season. Theres plenty more, but some people try and disregard that these players are good just because they arent Odell, Julio or Antonio Brown. If Edelman didnt go down in the preseason two years ago I think Brady wouldve put up 600 yards in that superbowl instead of 505. Great video though! Edelman is a savage.

Welker is a HOFer, imo to be in the HOF you have to be one of the most dominant players at your time. Wes and Brady were damn near unstoppable, and he has the stats to prove he may have been the best receiver for one or 2 seasons. He’s a HOFer. As much dominance as Edelman has done in the playoffs, he’s not a HOFer because he doesn’t have an argument to be the best receiver at any point in his career

But on the topic of Julian Edelman not finishing a lot of a Seasons you should go more into his stats in those seasons and you would see how quickly he almost gets to a thousand yards. Last year for example Miss for games and still almost got 800 yards it's it's very impressive not a lot of receivers can miss the amount of games that he does and still pull up near a thousand yards a season. Edelman is so underrated that I can’t even believe people think he is over rated. He has had 1400 yards and 5 touchdowns in 9 postseasons while not even being Brady’s number one target. And in his first 3 season he only had 75 receiving yards in the postseason. (And that is because he was being started behind Wes Walker) He is second behind Jerry rice in receiving yards all time in the postseason. And finally every one knows how dynamic the Patriots offense is and that Bill Belichick will never over use a guy. Bill is always scheming and changing up game plans. Edelman will never be treated like a number one guy on the offense because of it and even then he has put up unbelievable numbers...

He'll sit players out for portions of the season to save them for the end of the season. He's been doing this since the Troy Brown Days. He is honestly a hall of famer, sometimes, like in Edelman’s case, you just have to give him the respect because he’s been an integral piece of the Patriots dynasty. Someone with a similar amount of receiving yards who is in the Hall is Lynn Swann, who was an important piece of the Steelers dynasty in the 70s and had a Super Bowl MVP, yes his athletic prowess is greater than that of Edelman,and in the 70s it wasn’t as much a passing game, but their careers are pretty similar, and both deserve to be in the HOF.

He's a good receiver for that system. We've seen the Pats turn ok receivers into household names since their early 2000s dynasty. Back then it was Deion Branch and Troy Brown. Then they went with Welker. Now it's Edelman. It's not all system obviously, but it's a major part of it. I disagree in that saying Edelman is a product of the system is like saying Brady is a product of the system. When they gave Brady Deion and Brown, he made that work. Then they made the passing game more vertical with Stallworth and Moss... obviously he excelled there too. Then they gave him Hernandez and Gronk, and that worked. Then they went back to just Gronk and Edelman at the slot.... with White catching out of the backfield. That worked. So Brady has shown an ability to pass all kinds of ways. Edelman only plays the slot, short plays down the middle. It works very well because Edelman is great at it and Brady has been doing that for almost 20 years. Point is, I can't say Edelman is underrated anymore. People say he's one of the best in the league, which is not true. In terms of slot receivers only yes. In terms of wideouts, absolutely not.

Nice video, thanks. Regarding some points mentioned in it: There are hardly any games where JE was schemed out, most recently Rams threw every player and coverage on him and could not do it. When he is healthy (since he took over his current role) he is always a factor. Also, don't forget proper scheming can limit even the most talented guys: recent example Pats limiting Hill to 1c/48y in AFCCG. So, I don't think that argument stands against Edelman. Other point, he does not always catch 40 yard bombs, true, but every team plays to their players strengths. JEs skill is route running, short area quickness and YAC ability. Every coach with a sound mind would use him in a similar role. I don't buy into the fact he would be an ordinary player in an other team. He would be used in the same way and he would produce the same way. His regular season stats are obvious but his playoff stats add up to like a full season where he has crazy numbers. And those are playoff games, meaning they are against the best competition at the biggest stage. To me, great players shine at the greatest moments. No one appreciates a guy who fades out when lights are the brightest. If HOF is a rank for great players, then JE is one. He has created so many unforgettable moments in playoffs and SBs. Also, don't forget Pats are 3-0 in SBs when JE11 played WR. He was not someone who just rode along in those journeys, the attitude he brought to the field changed the whole team.

I should start off by saying that I am NOT a Patriots fan. I am a die-hard Broncos fan until the day I forget what football is, or death. Figured I should say that before I say my opinion on the Julian Edelman HoF discussions. In my opinion, he’s not first ballot but he’s definitely in there. If you’re 2nd to Jerry Rice to anything you’re probably pretty damn good in this football league. Sure, it’s not very close but that’s a lot of yardage in the post-season. Not to mention he’s been to what, 5 or 6 Superbowls and has 3 won? That’s extremely impressive whether you’re in a scheme that uses you well or not. Sure, his regular season stats aren’t stunning, however it’s not always about the regular season. You see people talk about the greatest QBs of all time. Well, usually people either immediately go to total regular season passing yards, or number of Superbowls won. Most people would say Tom Brady because he’s up there in both of those charts, however Drew Brees, who is #1 in Passing Yards and Touchdowns, is barely regarded as a top 5 and sometimes a top 10 QB. Why? Superbowls. He has only been to one and has only won one. Aaron Rodgers, greatest QB from a skill perspective this league has ever seen. Only been to one Superbowl and has only won that one, making him maybe in the top 5. No, I don’t regard Julian Edelman as one of the top-tier receivers this league has ever seen. However, he has contributed to the greatest dynasty we have ever seen in many ways.

You need a good system to be able to thrive, and that should not be an argument held against him. The Patriots have had many receivers be unable to play in the system because of how difficult it is to adjust to it, for example Chad Johnson (Ochocinco) could not get a grasp on how complicated the New England system is. And he was an absolute beast/highly talented receiver in his prime. Yes he may be a product of the Patriot system, but to use that as a negative has never made sense to me.
