As the Japanese people's anger boiled over against the Japanese government for its failure to respond to the earthquake, the Japanese government spread false rumors such as "Koreans poisoned the wells," "Koreans set fires," and so on. In response, armed Japanese citizens, vigilantes, police, and soldiers massacred innocent Koreans living in Japan. The number of Koreans massacred during this period is estimated at 6661.
