The choreography gloriously compliments the sumptuous score! Brings back those wonderful memories of Golden Age Hollywood!

What does this have to do with "Golden Age Hollywood"? The original production of On the Town was the the BROADWAY debut of composer Leonard Bernstein, book & lyric writers Betty Comden and Adolph Green, and choreographer Jerome Robbins; it was directed by Broadway legend George Abbott. This terrific revival did honor to their memories, while being entirely fresh.

Everybody is somewhat familiar with Bernstein's score for West Side Story, but for me his music for On the Town is truly special, and my personal favorite among his musicals.

Thank you for posting the ballet so I can see it again and again!! It is my favorite, favorite part of the show. I've seen the show twice! I listened to Bernstein's score over and over on KZbin after I saw the show the first time, so I enjoyed On The Town even more when I saw it a second time. This climactic pas de deux always brings tears to my eyes. Megan's velvety flexibility and fiery leotard; Tony's torso; the longing, the frustration, and the anger. The beauty of their bodies as they dance-fight is thrilling and heart-breaking to watch. A peach and gold aurora for Gabey as he fights for Ivy and wins.

On the Town is a problematic show, Comden and Green's book reduces the characters to cartoons. This production minimalized that problem and was as good a realization as I am ever likely to see in my lifetime. That same theater season I also saw by far the best production of West Side Story as I am every likely to see, almost perfect in every way. This production re-imagined the choreography, this ballet was very different from what Robbins set, but oh so fascinating and erotic. Thanks for posting, it is wonderful.

Well, you're entitled to your opinion, but I have to say I've never found ANYTHING "problematic" about On the Town! Maybe I appreciate the fact that Comden and Green came from a background in cabaret sketch comedy, and brought a wonderfully over-the-top humor (as well as lots of "heart") to this piece... The characters' names alone - Brunnhilde Esterhazy, Claire de Loone, Judge Pitkin W. Bridgework - make me grin! And the book and lyrics seem to me a perfect fit for Bernstein's terrific score.

Saw this on Broadway - a terrific production of a great musical. The seemingly effortless way in which Bernstein merges "popular" and "classical" music in this score is still astonishing. Also, in an outstanding cast Tony Yazbeck is a really special Gabey: acting, singing and dancing all so wonderful, such HEART! Very glad this is preserved on video so people can get a taste of this great production. :-)
