Once again, you did an outstanding job. I personally saw many members of my family who migrated to Chicago, Detroit, Gary, Dayton, Cleveland and many other cities looking for job opportunities. Many of those that moved are now coming back to Texas, Louisiana, Alabama and Mississippi. They are in their late sixties and bring those dollars back to their place of roots. These small towns in Louisiana are glad to see the senior black citizens come home and spend their hard earned northern dollars at home. Good example is Homer, Louisiana.

Same. My family moved to Cleveland Detroit Chicago. But what a lot of people don’t know a lot of these AA moved to southern cities from the country. Like Nashville atl Memphis Charlotte. Even though it was still racism it was more economic opportunities and started there own African American communities in these cities. For instance Jefferson at in north Nashville was a major hub for black artists and clubs and businesses. But I do see a new great migration happening as of right now. So many people from Chicago New York Detroit even LA and the Bay Area coming back down south. Yes the south still has ties to racism and the confederate cause. But the south is becoming more diverse and and some of these red states are becoming swing states. And most of the big cities in the south are now blue. I’m starting to see a few up north states turning red

Mr. Hughes (you're a teacher, so I feel I ought to address you that way), this episode seemed a bit more somber than other videos. But I really enjoy how you explain history so well! This is a very painful part of US History that we would rather forget. But we need to remember the hardship Americans dealt with in the past and possible solutions. Just trying to relate to the mindset of white people who so horribly mistreated and killed black Americans is unthinkable. This is really as disgraceful as slavery; threatening black Americans with mob justice murders that the law enforcement was either unequipped or unwilling to contain is difficult to accept for people raised in today's culture. It's sad! There are still fierce racial conflicts today, unfortunately. I never recall being taught about the Great Migration in school, so it was always mysterious how the northern industrial cities had large black neighborhoods. I'm not sure why I either don't recall this history lesson or it was never taught when I was back in school. Thanks for teaching us about the unsettling parts of history, as well as the more upbeat times.

+Keith Hughes (HipHughes) Usually I talk about the great migration when I am in Harlem or Brooklyn; but I also continue with the narrative linking the current gentrification trend to a reverse white flight from the suburbs back to the cities . Otherwise I specialize with a tour about Occupy Wall Street having lived there, been intimately involved with; and have been present at Zuccotti Park almost every single day from the 1st day to the very end. I combine the history that I personally have seen; been of witness to; and am responsible for - and I combine that (in a greater overall historical context) with other social movements in the area that I have researched as a licensed & trained tour guide. But yeah, you can literally smell the history on every single block!

My grandfather always remembered 14 April 1948 when he and my grandmother moved to Chicago roughly 2 years after he returned from naval service.

One will think after viewing writings regarding The Great Migration that black people left in droves from Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana, but not from Georgia. Then when you apply black demographics to each state's total population by census, it's odd that much less has been written about Georgia compared to the the other three states. Why? Because figures will show that in comparison to 1920 black population, the 1930-1970 average black populations were 226k larger in Louisiana, 58k larger in Alabama, 25k larger in Mississippi, but 101k smaller in Georgia.
