At first I never understood why Cao Shuang didn't try to fight but as you explain it that their families were essentially held hostage, it makes sense why they surrendered. Also explains why later on Wang Ling knew his deal would not be honored.

Oh dang, I thought Sima Yi would at least spair Huan Fan life. Unlike Cao Cao who like recruiting capable advisors. But im guessing as he is going to become emperor then he would need positions to be open up to receive loyalty from the new appointments. 🤔

Man good thing Cao Shuang used his obvious advantages to easily overcome Sima Yi's small force that lacks legitimate authority...... what? You mean he just gave up without a fight trusting his fate to a man whom he had screwed over again and again for 10 years against the advice of his most trusted advisors? Welp, there goes the empire. Ah well Wei is screwed, i guess i will root for Shu-Han, i think they will reunite the empire now that Wei is in the decline 😅

I think it was episode 9 in the Sima Yi's Coup series, where you said it was illegal for common citizens to own armour. Does that mean the common soldier was mostly unarmoured or did the general issue out any available armour before the battle?

Large percent of the soldier even at times of war are unarmored. You are issued your armor when you enlist and then return it when you are off duty.

Forgot to mention: I remember from the Advisor's Alliance that Sima Yi said he was nothing like Cao Cao, whom he considered tyrannical and to have killed many many people. Sima Yi also declined the titles of duke, prime minister and the nine bestowments and remained a loyal subject of Wei until death. He repeatedly declined all honours awarded to him and instructed his relatives to behave humbly and mind their conduct, as he constantly reminded his sons to do the same. So was he really loyal or he had already seen Wei was corrupted and destined to fall and just wanted to secure the future stability of his dynasty? I think the mass executions after his coup make this point clear. I want to ask why he considered himself better than Cao Cao since he made the decision to unnecessarily execute so many people like he did in Liaodong. The only thing he did better in comparison with Cao Cao was that he declined power and titles and refused to usurp, leaving this for his sons. Or not?

I mean statement is only from the show. As a subject of Wei, historically he would never make a comparison against the founding member of the dynasty. Even if he dared, he wouldn’t say he is better than him. But it all comes down to a matter of playing it low key until you are actually going to usurp, before then you act loyal regardless how you actually feel.

Nevertheless, I'm going to be benevolent and only take away your military control and let you live like the rich kid you are. Cao Shuang: I still get to live like I do now? Awesome! Huan Fan: That's probably the only way you lose, you fathead. Cao Shuang literally gave up his queen and rooks on the chessboard for his bishops - live like a fool, die like a fool. Even if Cao Shuang had no intention to usurp, didn't the act of taking imperial items, expanding his estate and taking the emperor's concubines equate to it? He was doomed either way from his actions. I guess Sima Yi just wanted things to go ASAP. Ooof, foolish He Yan.

It’s quite ironic isn’t it? After all the years the Cao nobility spent holding Sima Yi in mistrust, in the end they trust their own fate in his hands. Willingly lining up their own heads.

And although Huan Fan died, it was not all in vain. Vendettas can be repaid, even if it's a hundred years later. A famous general named Huan Wen, of the same clan as and possibly descendant of Huan Fan, would dominate the Sima court and his son would later (briefly) overthrow it. So the one with the brains, in a way, won out in the end.

In the future let's talk lores, can you but screenshots from the 3k game when u mention a geografic location/city/province? I know that you made a let's talk lore about the provinces but it's still hard to remember all of them. If you can't from the 3k game because of copyright, then a map(even simplified one) with the approximate locations around the mentioned one.

I don't think he was as it does not benefit him. How would it improve his standing? He was already the de facto ruler and the Emperor was weak and listened to him. Usurping would just invite a whole laundry list of issues. Backlash from the court, backlash from the other imperial clan members, and backlash from the other two kingdoms who might start war when they sense internal strife inside Wei. All he will get back is just a title change really.

Like to just highlight each of their careers? Not really since these titles were A) not a thing during their time period and B) they often had really uneven careers so like Yue Jin would have a really short career compared to say Zhang Liao or Zhang He.

@@SeriousTrivia yeah mostly just to highlight, sincr we might have some from zhang liao on the Hefei eps, some for Yu and Yue Jin on the around Guandu's time episodes but finding bits about them from 6 different episodes isnt as easy, but making videos about them isnt as easy either so i completly understand if its not on your mind right now

Yes. Xiahou Ba (Xiahou Yuan's son) defects to Shu basically as a direct consequence of this coup. Just to highlight how significant this was, Xiahou Yuan died fighting Shu during the Hanzhong campaign and Xiahou Ba swore vengeance for his father. Also, a few of the Huainan rebels mentioned defects (or tries to defect) to Wu later.

The boy is later deposed for Cao Mao, the lad Cao Fang becomes Duke of Shaoling in the Western Jin dynastic period under Emperor Wu Sima Yan.
