This got me to actually go read the rules and wow, me and my family play it pretty differently. It's more like a mix of rummi and uno with us: the first player to empty their rack wins the game, there's no time limit or points, the joker never has a set color or number, and you only take tiles from the pool when you can't think of any moves to make. It's very fun, actually. I am curious as to just how far back that goes, though, considering even my grandma plays like that.
