It’s so crazy bc as a black woman who grew up in the 10th district in Paris (where there’s a big south Asian population), I’ve always found south Asians sooo pretty/handsome !! like I would pass by a clothing shop and be so amazed about the beauty of your dresses and jewelry, I kinda grew up with Bollywood and had south Asians friends which helped me appreciate even more south Asian culture. My mom even used to mix west African and the south Asian hair care routine to do my hair. It’s crazy how people can’t appreciate a race (who’s not white) without making it a trend, like ??? our races are not trends tf and we don’t need the west recognition to realize that we’re desirable (sorry if there’s any mistakes, English is not my first language)

It is important to realise that brown or darkerskinned POC are not ugly it is just western or eurocentric standards make us seem that we are

2:40 Just a heads up since I haven’t seen ppl define “The Great Shift” in this way, but the phrase “The Great Shift” was essentially coined to refer to the Black guys with dreadlocks noticing the “shift” in being desirable nowadays compared to back around 2016 when Lightskin curly head (Black) guys were the “it” guys and all the craze. So it was considered the great shift for dreadheads to finally be recognized😭 Basically Darkskin dreadheads recently being admired and finally getting their moment to shine is the great shift from in comparison Lightskin curly heads who had dominated around the 2016 Fboy era.😭

I’ll probably delete this comment later, but something that puts me off is the fact that even in this 'great shift', it only leans towards South Asian women with Caucasian features, which ruins the whole idea of a great shift in the first place.
@idrk150715 сағат бұрын
Depends what you mean by Caucasian features. Small nose and big eyes combo isn’t a Caucasian standard, for example. That’s just an objective worldwide standard of beauty, and calling it “Caucasian” is imprecise. Often what people call is “Caucasian features” isn’t actually. All races can have a small nose, for example; just with varying formations.

@@idrk1507 while your comment is true to a certain extent, I would like to further clarify why that could be the reason. First off, colonialism had a huge impact on the changes in beauty standards around the globe. The proof behind this is, well, what our beauty standards are now versus the recorded accounts by travelers like Marco Polo where he said the following on his “The children that are born here are black enough, but the blacker they be the more they are thought of; wherefore from the day of their birth their parents do rub them every week with oil of sesame, so that they become as black as devils. Moreover, they make their gods black and their devils white, and the images of their saints they do paint black all over.” (Ill finish later)

Oh my gosh, I absolutely love the video! It's so true-whenever people receive Western validation, everything suddenly seems amazing. Take coconut oil, for instance; we all jump on board when it's labelled as healthy by Western standards. I've come across countless girls who have been mistreated by their relatives simply because of their skin tone, not because they're not beautiful-because they are stunning! It's disheartening to see them treated poorly, and while words alone may not change their situations, we can certainly empower them to believe in themselves and recognize their worth.

People are way too obsessed with race ,making whole race as a trend is absurd, how th these guys are noticing us now cuz we've been existing and been pretty, first of all these people dont know how south asian beauty looks like cuz of the stereotypes rooted in their brain and when they do meet pretty south asians they'll say stuff like 'you are pretty for an Indian ' or you look like some different race like what do they expect, idk why whole internet has an obsession with us ( mostly seeing hateful stuff ) but others saying is ignorant and when i see few south Asians commenting 'great shift' is just sad and cope....( cuz hate crimes have been increasing towards us lately and lets not even bring social media hate into this discussion, my condolences to Canadian NRIs ) , sending so much love to my south asian brothers and sisters i hope this world heals and world finally see us for what we truly are and respect us 💗🎀

I actually disagree with the hollywood indian represention is better thing.I think both bollywood and hollywood is bad when it comes to that representation cause in bollywood they tend to focus on the indian beauty standards ONLY witha few acceptions and hollywood just typecasts south asian's as dark skinned and looking a certain way when in reality south asian's quite literally look like anyone and everyone.
@anaesthete55929 сағат бұрын
Exactly, if anyone think Indians have better representation in Hollywood I can only pity them, the major reason for us being considered nerd and unattractive in the west is because of how hollywood and western medias portrayed us all these years, and the typecasting is worse than we think they only cast stereotypical looking or what they think how indians suppose to look, also I think nowadays even Bollywood have better diverse looking casts and bollywood is not the only film industry in India so saying hollywood represented us better is pure bs

Hollywood does have better representation for darker Indians in these years..which is something whole indian film industries lack despite most of the indian population being dark...darker complexions in india has been and will be portrayed as the comical side character or a maid..or the darker roles will be given to someone with fairer complexion..for once,darker Indians have been done justice to and it is by Hollywood...for once,they feel represented and it is not even by the indian industry..Sad

I hope it does not lead to the fetishization and dehumanization of South Asian Women like it did for East Asian women... or any kind of woman in general. But I know eventually it will and that's the concerning part of this trend.

If the trend is about fetishization then that's gonna be a eyeroll from me but if it's used as an excuse to give more appreciation towards the South Asians (not just limited to my Indian sisters) then I can be fine w/ it. Hey maryam will you talk about so-called facial proportions (upper face, midface, lower face) that should be equal to look attractive or the forehead should be comparetively large. These beauty standards sucks the reason why women are undergoing nose surgery to get a smaller nose...most Indian faces have longer midface with long noses which looks ethereal and regal but nowadays they're looked as insecurity

Saying that Hollywood respresents Indians better is absolutely not true. Both Bollywood and Hollywood shows just a certain diasphora from the Whole India. Bollywood being a Hindi Industry cater to the Hindi belt, which is why there are more fair actors and actresses in there. While Hollywood mostly shows extreme brown as Indian (Many times those are Tamil actresses-Simone Ashley, Maitrie, Charithra, Saryu, Poorna). I think Bollywood still has a little better representation than Hollywood. Also there r so many other regional film Industries, counting all of that would contribute to the representation of Diversity within India.

As a former lover of Bollywood, you were very spot on, on the lack of diversity in that Hindi movie industry, thanks to Tollywood (South Indian) cinema, I got to know Indians are just like us Nigerians. I realise the only reason both of our countries have fair skinned people in the first place, is due to colonisation, and we were all dark skinned, so this light skinned fetishization is due to neocolonialism. Anyways, such a crazy trend to be honest
@dilsedesi17043 сағат бұрын
Thats not true. The white North Indians you see in Bollywood are not exactly white. There r still broen in comparison to West 'white'. But its because of the climate around that place. The Himalyas, Punjab and close regions are a lot colder than the South. We don't experience the extreme humidity like South(Mostly Coastal regions) Kashmiri are mostly white and u cannot say its because of the Colonisation. There is not a single drop of White blood in my family, yet all my relatives are fair. India is itself a subcontinent. You can find each and every type of color in India which is unique to the place and not because of Colonisation or other such things. Which is why Putting India as 'Race' is absolutely a stupid Concept.
