This made me cry. As someone whose home is east Asia, Jiaoying’s capacity to speak so openly and vulnerably, so articulately in a language and culture entirely differently is so rare. She is so beautiful inside and out.

Jiaoying you remind me a lot of my immigrant mother. She thought that if she could remove all "weakness" that everything would be okay. She did not realize that the weakness she was trying to eradicate within me...is my personality. I am a sensitive person who responds to compassion not fear. She had to learn that being vulnerable and "soft" is also strength, and that sometimes it is harder to sit with discomfort then keep pushing. We tend to project and think that the things that made us miserable also make others miserable, but other people are happy just where they are. May you find the strength to be vulnerable so that you can hold that space with your family and within yourself. Compassion is not weakness

Thanks for your openness and honesty. I had to shut off the podcast while at work to hold back tears. My great grandfather is from Southern China. I do and at the same time don't want to know the story of my ancestors because I have an emotionally distant father who does not have the capacity to self-reflect or have compassion. I can assume he was a spoiled, over-praised, first son of a somewhat wealthy family. The Joy Luck Club story still rings true in the Chinese culture. Good for you Jiaoying for trying to work on breaking the cycle of abuse. May you continue to heal, find love, and true companionship.

From this interview with Dr Drew it shows how smart she is. Jaoying if you read this you are beautiful and intelligent and also one of if not the best female comics I can think of. Ms. Pat is another female comic that somewhat reminds me of you because she had a traumatic upbringing and is hilarious.

@dyhidrogenmonoxide
@dyhidrogenmonoxide 4 ай бұрын
That’s not how that works. Narcissists don’t think there’s anything wrong with being a narcissist, nor does being one prevent you from being self aware. The only question is if saying you are gives you an advantage or disadvantage. For example if people believe anybody who says they are a narcissist is not one. (I make no claim as to wether she is or not)
@j3llyb1sh
@j3llyb1sh 4 ай бұрын
@@dyhidrogenmonoxideThe reason that was said in the first place is because most narcissists won't admit they are narcissists. I liked how Dr Drew followed up with some questions about empathy, because most narcissists have a lack of empathy. They can't put themselves in other people's shoes. However, all of us have some type of narcissistic traits. Especially now days when it comes to social media and whatnot.
@Shortstacksandticktacks
@Shortstacksandticktacks 4 ай бұрын
I have definitely recognized some narcissistic qualities in myself, especially when I was younger. I think this is only true with severe narcissism. For example, I get upset if I don't get invited to things, feeling excluded, even if I don't know the person that well, or sometimes it's ok if not everyone likes you.

JiaoYing, I really hope you see this. My mom’s mother sent her to Hong Kong for a “better life” but she said she would have preferred to starve in China if it meant being together. Your kids need you for more than the material comfort you can provide. Be a human being- and balance out the doing part or they will never feel enough themselves.

Agreed! That s probably one of her problems , she still wanted her mom to be proud of her, she still wanted attention from other people, success=rich … she doesn’t know how to live her life for the wellbeing of herself and her kids. She s smart, she will figure it and hopefully it won’t take her too long.

Thank you for the courage and the brute honesty in this discussion between you two. It is very relatable. Dr. Drew is wonderful. From my experience, can I suggest learning a little bit about attachment theory to help you cope with your emotional triggers. It is an easy but helpful concept. But also think about the fact that those threats no longer exist in your life. It is in the past and is not real anymore so they (the people and situations) should not have any more power to control our choices in life.

Jiaoying I connect so much with what you shared in this conversation with Dr Drew. From growing up with a cruel parent, being fiercely independent, being a single Mom now, to the same passionate intolerance of weakness/incompetence. I have an 8 year old daughter who’s upbringing could not be more different to mine, we’re back in NZ now unfortunately stuck here since Covid began, but shortly after she was born until almost 4 we lived in Tianjin and during that time I was also able to take her to several of the surrounding countries. I don’t tolerate any kind of BS but she is a girl who is confident in how she looks, her ability to achieve anything she wants in life, trust because I’ve never broken a promise to her and that she is loved. Jiaoying, you’re fkn awesome and you deserve every success! I don’t go out much at all but I’ve started a habit of getting front row seats everytime a comedian who can genuinely make me laugh plays here in Auckland which is maybe twice a year if I’m lucky. So far I’ve seen Chappelle, Bert Kreischer (sadly I missed out on Tom Segura when he was here) and most recently Theo Von. If you come down, I no doubt have to come see you. Sending love and best wishes from down here in Auckland. 🙌🏻♥️🙏🏻♥️🙌🏻

You know Jiaoying, i think the immigrant experience while at the same time navigating thru the challenges in married life while readjusting to a new life in America makes all immigrants ruthless and harsh at some point. There is that need in you to prove yourself, grow yourself, advance yourself, and then prove how americanized you have become in order to gain acceptance from society . Its a lot to take in, especially for someone like you who’s in the limelight and has to keep a brave public face while carrying immense childhood trauma and survivor skills. Be easy on yourself and let yourself weep for everything that was , it will be a lifetime of healing. Have grace for your experiences and grace even for those that were abusive towards you. Only in giving others grace, will our healing take place. From one immigrant to another who’s had a lot to prove. You are wonderful, beautiful, and kind. And by golly, youre making millions of us laugh. Thats extraordinary in and of itself.

I understand that it's about jaoying's trauma and what her parents did to her, making her see others struggles and judging them for not doing something they may not be capable of and also her desire to not want to be the victim, but Dr Drew should know better. Being a victim is not weak...people are overworked, underpaid, traumatized, overwhelmed and constantly anxious and/or depressed. And absolutely everyone processes that trauma and that pain differently. Not everyone can throw themselves into their work and succeed as a coping mechanism. I speak from experience. I have fairly severe ADHD and when I started physics in high school I failed for the first time in my life. So I spent all my time outside of school studying for it...did I get better grades? Marginally, but they were still failing in the end. I understand being frustrated with other people. But they are not weak because they can't do what you do. They are different than you and they deserve empathy, kindness and patience.

Thanks Jiaoying for your raw honesty, the emotional neglect you experienced as a child really resonates with me. You are a very smart person and dont be so hard on yourself when you describe yourself, I dont think you're a heartless narcissistic piece of shit or a hawk, I think you learned to survive in conditions through no fault of your own and you're unpacking now, I also have no tolerance for people that choose convenience, or weakness. Western society has fucked up a lot of shit. We dont have famine or war and people still kill themselves intentionally or unintentionally, what a contradiction. Like Dr Drew said, you have a lot to teach us about struggle and survival, human beings are resilient, but sadly farmaceutical companies push medication too much that it numbs people therefore they cant find the strength within themselves to push forward, btw i dont talk abt the severe cases here. Im sending a big hug to you!
