I have to say that when I first backed this Kickstarter I was looking for a good quality print of the Great Wave to hang in my office, but these videos, the quality and the clarity of your explanations have become something I wait for with great anticipation. They are fascinating and well made and really show the care and attention you put into your work. I'm so please to be a backer - take as long as you need, I won't be coming for your head - in fact when I finally have the print in hand I will be sad that the videos will no longer be coming.

Paul Morrison Mr. Morrison, thank you for your enthusiasm, and the patience! As for 'videos will no longer be coming', well, we've certainly learned how important nice videos are to our relations with the collectors/friends/customers, so we're already planning what to do next once this particular project is done. We intend to have some fun with this!

I just love the detail that David goes into here. I feel like its not 'dumbed down' in any way to cater for mass appeal. Also he was an aptitude for telling an engaging story - marvellous work again Mr Bull.

I love the thought that some 150 years from now, some other carver will be doing his own version of a youtube video for that time in the future and will say "And here we have a beautiful example of a David Bull version of The Great Wave from sometime in the early 21 century..."

It never ceases to amaze me how lovely Japan looks. The tarmac is neat and clean! How do they do this? Is it cleaned by some kind of governmental body? Is it maintained by the populace? How do they get their roadworkers to do such clean work in the first place? All of their buildings are pretty! Even the pachinko arcades, and batting houses, the sign work is well designed and made. Not to mention the temples and pagodas! It's all very satisfying in an obsessive compulsive sort of way. I've got to visit. Oh and as always, brilliant stuff David!

Bless you David for taking the trouble to photograph my flower shop request - you are so kind. I was fascinated to see the available flower stocks and that they all might be bought in the UK at this time of year. So wonderful that we both live in four-season countries and I see so many parallels. We are so looking forward to our own Sakura Festival - I'll send you some photos from my local streets and gardens, if it's not impertinent. My partner and I are on tenterhooks awaiting the next part of the detective saga of the 'Great Wave Investigation'. Like one of your respondents, we are guessing that the Metropolitan print was the slightly earlier dated copy. Neh? We are planning an article on your work for the launch of our new magazine 'Shibumi' - we are both yoga and meditation teachers and writers. Why don't we try reaching out to see if we can find a collector who might have that 'first-block' print - a bit like trying to find the 'missing link' in human evolution. Anyway, very well done, David, your work is a 'hot topic amongst our friends and students and you have won yourself many new fans in the UK for your excellent work, erudition, genial presentiations, infectious enthusiam, walk-abouts and persistent hard work. We are all cheering you on in all your endeavours. Kindest regards, Rosalind Widdowson and Tantro.

I really like these vids, the artistry and the pure attention to detail makes these pieces amazing. It also has lead me to question if this level of art could be accomplished with laser etching, or even 3d printing. Of course it would lose so much of the human aspect of the piece but it's an interesting notion. Perhaps something I will look into.

Dear David, thank you for your enthusiasm and wonderful insights. Just taking a glance at your wooden key block is tantalising to say the least. I'm so pleased that so many peole are as eager as my partner and I to see the next stage. You have definitely inspired a trip to Japan. I look forward to the time I get to visit your shop. Please keep on recording your street scenes - they really bring things alive about where you work and your local community. Do you have any local flower shops? I'd love to see what they stock. Kindest regards, Rosalind Widdowson & Tantro (UK).

I wonder if the imperfections you mention at the beginning were _known_ at the time (among the experts who might be called upon to authenticate) and, if forgery was the aim, were very deliberately included for that very reason.

Greetings from Norway. I know this is a old video, but couldn’t the key block been recarved? Because of all the fine lines in the key. It could have been easily worn. And the color blocks are the same, just older? Great work by the way. Love your videos and your stories. Thank you.

Ok, so... if in the olden times they couldn't just glue down a "stencil" so to speak, did they literally just have to look back and forth from the image to the block and carve free hand?? That seems so insane
@soundcheck688510 ай бұрын
It is even more insane than you think. They glued down the one and only original to the key block, this is why we have none of the original paintings/drawings used for woodblock prints from those days.

Well done Detective Bull, would the clarity and decisiveness of the cuts be clue, one looked so clean, the other on examination, sloppy. Forgery in the art world is rampant, but technique and skill especially in the days of Hokusai (who would not have put up with the apprentice) would be paramount. Love your work, Sosakan-Sama Bull.

How were those copies you have made? Couldn’t THAT process account for your differences? Copy machine laser scanning tubes vary in intensity as they age and with the varying electrical current which could account for those anomalies - your investigative work showing similarity in actual carvings is a better argument fi them being the same than different ( in my opinion).

What a cliffhanger on the prints! Also, can you film the asakusa little theater so we can see how little it is?
@seseragistudio9 жыл бұрын
Spencer Nelson Actually, there's a story there ... They are currently running daily vaudeville shows, using young comics who are desperate to break into show business. That's fine for Japanese visitors, but does nothing for the overseas visitors who visit this area. So the theatre owner is planning a new kind of show, beginning this coming spring, one that will 'appeal' to foreigners as well. (At least, male foreigners ... :-)
