Good talk. I am slowing down my buying. I have promised myself not to buy wigs that are too big. Caps are getting larger and when they are too large, the lace doesn't lie right, they are not comfortable. The problem is that I like medium length wavy styles. And not many of those come in Petite. Mostly short and straight. I think Kona is one of my all time favorite wigs. Stella is very similar. For now, I think I have enough wigs because I don't wear them often. I use hats and soft caps. Even when I go out, it is often too windy to wear a wig. I am not afraid of it blowing off, but that really beats up the fibers. Have a great New Year, Cynthia.
@frontporchwigchat626010 ай бұрын
I agree about Kona, stupid to discontinue that wig. And yes, Stella is similar, but Ellen Wille needs to get a clue and realize not everyone wants rooting. You have a blessed 2024, Margaret.

Im thrilled to have just found your channel. I agree with everything you say and I learned a lot. You’re a straight shooter. I’ve been wearing wigs since 2021 due to #2 bouts of COVID which caused me to loose almost all of my hair. I’m pretty familiar with names and brands. I admit, I got caught up in the thrill of having beautiful hair and went overboard by purchasing way too many. That is still in the process of changing, but has definitely slowed down. I’m not a wealthy woman! So, I’m looking forward to following you and thanks for what appears to me to be a terrific forum. I know you must work very hard! Much appreciated.❤

I have a rule about new styles. I wait almost a year before trying. That way I can see all the written comments to get more of a good assessment. Interestingly, my go to has been Jon Renau Cameron petite. It also doesn’t grow during the day and has worn really well. I put a silicone spray at the underneath nape from time to time. I agree with everything you said. I probably won’t buy Belle Tress ever again after the way you were treated. Plus they are enormous. Hope you and your husband start feeling better soon. Have a blessed day.
@frontporchwigchat626010 ай бұрын
Sadly, Belle Tress has improved everything except their attitude and quality control. Interestingly enough, the Belle Tress average was positively petite, both of the ones I had. It fit like a glove. But, I am exploring old friends, so to speak, and brands I have not worn in years to find what I need. Good rule, Lynn.

I needed to hear this today! Recently I have been a part of the great wig chase. Not sure how i got caught up in it but i have had some pretty bad depression and stress lately which has worsened my hair loss. I have fallen victim to feeling I need a new style that comes out. The hype that sellers put out there with a new style is crazy. I have found one wig that i absolutely hands down love and can wear all day and night and feel natural. Yes it's expensive. My oldest one is almost two years old and I still wear it and it looks new. It is Julianne Lite. Instead of purchasing so many new styles that are just so so and I really don't reach for i should have just stuck with this style that is tried and true, for me at least. Thank you for posting this because it has really become an addiction that i was blind to before hearing this.
@frontporchwigchat62609 ай бұрын
I'm glad it was helpful to you, Lisa. Julianne is a quality piece, was never disappointed in the few I've owned. Quality over quantity is actually cost-effective, in the end. Most of us fall victim to the buying frenzy when we first discover wigs, which is understandable. It's just that some never get out of that pattern even when they know what they really like and what works for them. God bless! ~Cynthia

@frontporchwigchat626010 ай бұрын
Definitely a non rooted style is out for Starly. Most wigs with shorter layers that have a decent amount of permatease do grow! They have no weight to hold the style in check like longer wigs do.
@essanjay860410 ай бұрын
I treat my wigs similar to how I treat glasses - that is, I don't need 70 different varieties! In fact, now that I've become a seasoned wig wearer and know exactly what I like I stick with the same couple of styles. I do like to have 3 or 4 on the go at the same time. I find it helps with maintenance to let them 'rest' on a stand after a day's wear. I also always keep one 'old' model for gardening, medical appointments etc. Some women enjoy being 'collectors' which is no different to collecting handbags or shoes or jewellery etc. If you can afford it and it brings you joy then why not?
@frontporchwigchat626010 ай бұрын
Of course, everyone's finances are different, yet I see women that I'm sure cannot truly afford it "collecting" wigs. It is entirely their business, but I'm sure there are some who are feeling a little bad about their purchases and it would benefit those women to narrow down what they truly love. I don't collect anything myself (except maybe trolls on my channels but that isn't by choice, LOL). I think five or six wigs is perfectly doable, as you said, to keep the wear and tear off the more expensive ones. Seems prudent to me as well. I do like having an eyeglass wardrobe, but then, I buy those super cheap online so not exactly like a wig purchase.

. Not a journey I wanted to take, either, Carolynn. I think with the super high wig prices of even those with lesser features, it is not a bad idea to buy two or three quality pieces in colors we know we love and wear those until they need replacing. Quality over quantity and all that. The pitfall of wig wearing is that we have innumerable choices today in style, color and just all over variety and it can be difficult to corral our wants. She is advocating on our behalf by going public with her concerns. I have worn wigs for about 15 or more years, but never knew the ins and outs of it all. She does. She is giving us honest wig reviews and does not profit from it. Regarding the Starly wig, she definitely looks stunning in it. Layered wigs are so flattering esp in that highlighted color. Hi Cynthia, I read something from you a couple days ago, but can't find where it was, so this comment will be in the wrong place. I am so glad that you have brought out so many of my own thoughts and feeling regarding wigs, and the place it can/can't have in my life. I'm on a strict budget since I have been on my own for 26 years and am currently 67 years old. (we're the same age) I enjoy wigs, and I enjoy you tube, but I cannot let it take over my budget nor my time. Since I started wearing wigs about 15-20 years ago, I realized right away that this wig thing could get totally out of control. It's fun and wigs make me look better and younger....BUT there are OTHER things in life that I need/and or/want. The fact that wigs quickly wear out yet are still so over priced should be the first red flag. I know that there are tons of women out there that can easily afford to have dozens if not hundreds of wigs at a time, but I am not nor ever will be one of them. Actually, there are things that I like more than wigs, so something HAD to go. Also, I found a wig/beauty/fashion store in my vicinity and purchased a wig from there, knowing in a 30 minute drive, I could return it with less headaches. It was a winner and I got tons of compliments on it. Sure, there were no bells and whistles, but it looked good on me and could pass the "sniff test" from non wig wearers. I still watch and enjoy wig channels on you tube, but I watch them less often, especially when they are "hard" sells, meaning that they are not just reviewing a wig, but also get some sort of compensation from the wig company they may represent. If I allow wandering to occur, millions of things could get in the way of what God has taught me about myself and the importance of people over possessions. I'm a human being but also a sinner, so I need to guard my heart, mind and time. Thank you Diane
@frontporchwigchat626010 ай бұрын
I really appreciate your comment, Diane. We cannot allow any kind of consumerism lower our quality of life or be the only barometer of our life satisfaction. You see that I don't review a wig every day or even usually every week. I only share my thoughts about what I have purchased for my personal wear and hope to help the new wig sisters to find their best hair as quickly as possible by offering opinions and even warnings at times. I was like that as a realtor even when that was my paid job. I was not selling someone a house, but helping them to find a home or sell a home in order to move on to the next phase of life, to make good choices and avoid pitfalls. I've seen reviews of wigs I owned and wondered why a particular issue was not brought to the forefront by the reviewer. I call them as I see them. I do enjoy wigs, but I don't enjoy spending several hundred bucks at a time and doing that frequently. So when I sell a piece to someone else, I make sure it's at a price that is very reasonable, even a bargain so they can try it without breaking the bank. I don't make any $$ from these videos so I have no dog in the fight, so to speak.
@chincaglieria10 ай бұрын
@@frontporchwigchat6260 that is what I like... a person that does not have a dog in the fight when I am a consumer. Very good comparison when you referenced real estate. Finding just any house is one thing, but finding a home is another. As a woman my age, my "feelers" are always out and on duty. Us females need to use our God given "spidy sense" in every aspect of life. I need to say it again, you have a very polite yet firm way of delivering the truth about your wig experiences and I appreciate that. Hopefully, you'll settle on a general type that you love and stay in that lane, though on occasion, it's fun to check out something different. That took a lot of $$ to find out and I rarely venture far from my type now.
@michele674010 ай бұрын
It can be exact opposite to what ages you to what ages someone else. I’m in my early 60’s and the wig you have on would make me look over 70. Reason is skin tone. I am super warm tone. And anything gray or cool makes me look a pale grayish green. Old. A warm soft light to reddish brown more blended - no streaky highlights 18:00 (the color you were speaking about) is what looks best on me. I have dark brown eyes and freckles. I would not only not need that color- but would look bad in it. Less harsh highlights. And I look 10 years or more - younger. I agree that the wig “for you” is really good that you have on. because the wig wasn’t nearly as flattering on you as this one - in the video 6 days ago about the affordable wig. Some women might think that they need that highlighting too and not know that is actually works against them. But between you and I, color wise, one of us would always be able to wear it ;)
@frontporchwigchat626010 ай бұрын
Naturally, I'm speaking from the perspective of blondes with fair skin tones-mine is neutral to slightly warm, Scandinavian heritage-but I also have seen dark complected women wear colors that are just too harsh for them; maybe they'd have worked when they were younger, but black hair with no dimension on an older woman is not generally flattering. My friend Rachel, The Indecisive Wig Wearer, has dark hair and eyes and is finding that her natural color without some dimension really drags her down. Older women just look better with some light around the face, whether a lighter brown, or highlighted blonde or even on auburn wigs, just some light so as not to drag down her face. Everyone should wear what makes them comfortable, though.
@michele674010 ай бұрын
Oh, for sure. Black is not good. Just saying even if light around face can be bad if wrong tone… more than color as long as it’s not black - agree on that

No, it's normal for a new wig to shed quite a few fibers. It's only a problem if it's coming out in clumps of fibers. It may shed for awhile. You won't be able to return it after you wear it a few times, though, no matter what, unless it's something especially egregious.

I do sell wigs that I no longer want to keep, but I can direct you to several places I know carry Tony of Beverly Starly, Name Brand Wigs, Wig Studio1, Best Wig Outlet, Mimi's Wig Boutique, Elegant Wigs and a few others that I don't have much experience with. Tony of Beverly rarely ever goes on sale, so you'd have to pay full price or cruise clearance sections periodically to find one less expensive.

I guess yours is not my wig channel. I have decided I’ll only buy heat friendly wigs in the future. After recently buying a couple of Estetica synthetic wigs I’ve been so frustrated trying every trick offered to take away the shine and make them not look like fake doll hair. Raquel Welch is my favorite wig maker. I generally wear straighter, chin length or slightly longer length bobs so I really don’t have problems with fibers frizzing on the ends. And I love being to curl or straighten the fibers if I feel like it. I recently gave 5 wigs to a friend who has breast cancer. If I can’t wear a wig, I’ll return it now. I accumulated some wigs I couldn’t wear over a period of years, before I had basic wig knowledge. I’ve learned so much through Facebook and KZbin.
@frontporchwigchat62609 ай бұрын
You do you, Joann. I'll never buy another RW wig. I can't pay the ultra-inflated prices of Raquel Welch and have the fibers ratty in a month and they are. I frankly don't want to be forced to use heat tools after spending $300-400 on a wig that doesn't last and the fibers don't move naturally, clump up all over the place. I do not enjoy trying to curl plastic hair, not one of my talents. But, it's your money, your call. I also don't think they sell non-rooted blondes anyway. I don't think most regular synthetic fibers look like doll's hair at all, though some brands have duller looking regular synthetic fibers from the start such as TressAllure's normal fibers (not the heat friendly, which has zero ashy blondes and no non-rooted ones). They sell hair glossers to *add* shine, for heaven's sake. And little girls who are too young to damage their hair with dyes have super shiny hair, a sign of youth, Shorter wigs in Raquel Welch get just as ratty as the longer ones-I had two Straight Up with a Twist, above the collar, and gave them both to a friend who was better at renovation than I am. She did some work on my Crowd Pleaser but the fibers are just completely worn out and I rarely wear my wigs a whole day or even daily at all. When I buy a dress that it $300, I don't want someone to tell me that it will fall apart in a month and I'd better learn to be a seamstress. All that said, Belle Tress fibers are far superior to Raquel Welch, don't get frizzy nearly as quickly, but the owner of Belle Tress is dismissive of her customers and with that attitude, I am no longer inclined to buy her brand.

@frontporchwigchat626010 ай бұрын
Years ago I found that what Godiva sells are generally Rene of Paris and Noriko wigs under their own label. In other words, they are what we call a "white labeler" company, nothing original to them. I have not worn those brands in years, not a huge fan of their lace fronts or basic cap wigs, but if I was interested in one of their wigs, I'd try to find out which one corresponds in those brands and buy those instead of Godiva. I don’t think the question is where do they put them. 60 stacked boxes would go along one wall in my office. The question I always wanted to know is… I can see a small percentage of women being able to “really” afford 70 wigs. And from the videos I’ve seen - a lot of these woman have purchased close to that many. When I first started watching the videos I was flabbergasted by the number of women that could buy $20,000 worth of wigs within a couple years, period. What in the world. I had to save to buy 1. (I avg $275 per wig @ 70 = almost 20K)

Absolutely right! I realize many have the means to do it, but most just do not. I've spent thousands on wigs in the past five years, mostly in the beginning when I was trying to figure out what worked well for me. Lately, I look so much more than I buy; in fact, as you see from my videos, I rarely buy anything unless it's truly affordable, either second hand or clearance/discounted. I don't see much that is compelling enough to even think about spending that kind of money.

21:35 So funny. My bio hair was wavy/curly and about 20” long. People would ask how I “fix it to do that” Well, NOTHING! Never brush it. They would say, “You don’t brush your hair!?” No, not unless I want to turn into a chia pet 😂 I ran conditioner through it with my fingers, rinsed it and let it dry naturally. I never even ran a wide tooth comb through my bio hair- ever. So I know how to instinctively take care of a wig.

Sometimes, it's difficult to find a reviewer who has the skin tones you have, is around your age and even at times, a reviewer who has actual hair loss and has a need to wear wigs. To me, that makes a huge difference. Someone who has never experienced the emotional turmoil of losing her hair can't relate and may assess a wig completely differently. You'll get it under control, Stacey. We all go through phases of buying to find what we like, what actually works for us in both style and color.

I have not found RW heat friendly wigs to get ratty fast at all. I prefer heat friendly because they look more natural in my opinion. Non heat friendly, in my opinion, are too shiny.
@frontporchwigchat626010 ай бұрын
Everyone has their preference. I had two Straight Up With a Twist wigs and a Crowd Pleaser and they all went ratty *very* quickly, even with the limited way I wear my wigs, my personal experience. The shine on most regular synthetics is usually no more than what you find in a healthy 5 yr old girl's hair *they even sell hair glossing products*, but dry shampoo and even just wearing it in the atmosphere takes care of that. I do find that Belle Tress heat friendly fibers last much, much longer than the HairUWear Tru2Life fibers, though. You wear what you're comfortable in, as I always say!

Cynthia, have you any experience with Gabor/RW's color Silver and Smoke? I cannot find one video with a real person wearing that color. It kind of looks like Martini, but I cannot tell for sure. As to chasing wigs -- Ha ! I have been a wig wearer for twenty years now. Based upon your story of your HL, mine is very similar, started in my twenties, and became progressively worse. Then I started to wear wigs in my early 40s. Not exclusively, I would wear falls, clip-ons, etc. As to the pricing, it is flabbergasting to see the prices of wigs these days. When I first started wearing them in the early 2000s, a high-quality wig would cost about $60-80 dollars (synthetic). The most innovative wigs at that time, IMHO, were the Noriko/Rene of Paris styles and colors. By far. The styles, at the time, were very cutting-edge, current, and daring. They were also, I believe, the first manufacturer to start with the rooted colors. They were a smashing success. Sky, Claire, Angelica, etc., so many, now, iconic styles and colors from Noriko/Rene of Paris. As the RW brand, you could get a RW HH wig for around $400+. Now they are thousands of dollars. It's staggering. Yes, I bought gob-tons of wigs when I first started out. There was not the same support and resources as there is today, as far as FB, IG, (did not exist -- I am not on social media other than YT), youtube reviewers, on and on. Twenty years ago, and for a number of subsequent years, I belonged to a wig support group online, although it was a private group, one had to "apply" and be invited. People would post stills of the wigs they bought and give their opinions on the wigs. There would be a section for questions and answers, one for styling products, tips on how to customize, etc. Because the technology at the time was not like it is today, the colors were rarely, if ever, accurate. So there is an enormous amount of information readily available for wig wearers these days, especially for the ones who are just beginning their journey. I just watched a great video yesterday and I recommend it for all "beginners" and not-so beginners (lol): channel "Spare Hair Love Affair," and it is entitled "Quit Wasting Money on Wigs You Won't Wear." It was spot on with every point. Thanks again for your video content. Appreciate you very much.

My hair is thinning at the front and I would love to have a wig but I am afraid people will say why are you wearing a wig how do you get over, that
@frontporchwigchat626010 ай бұрын
First, let me tell you that most people are just not that observant. They're not looking at your hair line to see if you're wearing a wig. Second, learn how to measure your head, circumference as well as ear to ear and hairline to nape to see if you can wear an average cap or need a petite or even a large. Most people can wear average. Buy the most realistic wig you can get, but when your own hair is thin, many wigs, to you, will look like way too much hair. A wig close to your own color and style is a good way to be stealthy about it. Learn what brands use less permatease (hairs that make a wig poof out and look "wiggy" and give lift to the style) and less density (thickness/number of hairs on the wig itself). Then, when you get a wig, do not try it on until you put on makeup and have a camera ready to take a selfie or do a short video clip of yourself. Bathroom mirrors are the worst for assessing wigs. And put the wig at the right level -four finger widths between the eyebrow and the hairline is a good way to measure where to place the hairline of the wig. Then when you've done all that, stand tall and smile. In other words, fake it until you make it! I have two videos called "A Wig Confidence Story"and a video entitled "Fake It 'Til You Make It" that may help you. ~Cynthia

So new to your channel and wigs, trying to learn as much as I can, I’m going to be 63 this year and I absolutely love the wig you are wearing!! But I’m afraid of a full wig at first, want to try a topper, have you had any of them and can you recommend one?
@frontporchwigchat626010 ай бұрын
I started with a topper and because my hair was already very thin, it was a mistake. Clips must have something to grab onto and they can pull and cause pain. I went immediately to wigs after I sold the topper. They have improved toppers in the past few years, of course, and I don't have the information to recommend one. The one I had was the Jon Renau Top Notch and it was a decent one, but you have to match your hair color fairly closely, which can be tricky. What I recommend is getting a wig that is low density with little to zero permatease *probably not the wig I'm wearing, very poufy on top, a good bit of permatease*. And just know that if you have advanced hair loss, it can really seem like way too much hair at first. Thanks for watching and I wish you success on your faux hair journey! ~Cynthia P.S. by the way, the Top Notch was about $150 when I purchased mine and now sells for $265, yikes! As much as a full wig.

This is not just regarding wigs, but it is regarding anything in life where we as consumers are hit hard on every day purchases. It was permatease for me. With 1st wig I went to a wig shop. Know NOTHING. And lady had me pic a wig out of catalog. She had about 20 wigs on display but they were all short or odd colors. She said find something you like in this book. I said closest, looking at this one small book (didn’t know that was a problem at time either) I didn’t know the name brand or anything at time - I just pointed ;) She had me pay $250 up front and owed $275 when came in to pick up. She called and I drove to the next town and she opened the box and put it on me. OMG! I know now…It was Estetica Verona. She positioned it on my head and I said is it too big? She said no. But it didn’t look right. And I’m use to big hair with my bio hair. But not super thick of the top like a mullet or mushroom like this. No wasn’t use to that. I said, I don’t like it. Can I get a different one (she didn’t tell me I had to take it before) but right then she said, No, I had to pay her the balance and no exchanges. I hadn’t worn it out of store, tag was still on it, and she she took out of box and tried it on me. I barely touched it. I know better now. And now I know about permatease. I even went back to that town and shop and asked her to help me make it wearable. I said you didn’t measure my head - my friend says it’s way too big for me and measured my head and I have a 21 a - 21.25 cir. Shop lady said, “I don’t need to measure your head your average and this fits everybody. I asked her to show me because my friend said the back of the wig when put on my hairline goes down practically to my shoulder blades 😂 Lady sat me down and pull the wig little more than an inch above my eyebrows and said, “There. It fits” I said, “I can’t wear it like that.” My hair line is way above that. She said, “Well, that is the way it fits”. I showed my friend and she fell on floor laughing. And I asked about the big bulk and she said she would thin it for me… I think it made it worse when I learned about permatease a month or so later - I understood more. Now I would get a hand tied cap. Doesn’t sit up off your head as much. Hugs your head more. It’s not the amount of hair the is off your head (say 1/2” off scalp) It’s the permatease bulk on your scalp making it look weird- Less scalp and hairline bulk, I believe, looks less like a mushroom:) 🍄
