This movie is just so over-the-top extravagant, MGM putting every resource to the test. The mechanics of the “Pretty Girl” number fascinate me. That stupendous turning spiral column, somehow wired for lights, and that massive curtain that must weigh close to a ton that hangs from a device that not only raises and lowers it in perfect sequence, but itself turns in perfect timing with the column. Mechanical genius.

What purpose is served by omitting two thirds of the image? Half of the appeal of these extravaganzas is in the compositional qualities of the cinematography. To simply present the middle one-third is to reveal a woeful lack of aesthetic appreciation, as well as to negate the contributions of the art director, the cinematographer, and the choreographer. I'm amazed that anyone would think this was a good idea.

None of beauties in this film are alive today, but their beauty will be kept in this movie forever just like a time capsule.

Vertical frame cutting off most of the image. Why? Stupid way to upload.

There never was a more elegant time in US theater. What a shame it's become. Just about money, now.

Too bad they chopped up the final medley. When I first saw this I fell out of my chair. Spectacular!
