This product isn't for LGSs or online dealers. It's for grocery stores, where parents don't want to spend $12 on a Sexy Lion packs. I personally don't have a problem with giving new players an on-ramp to MTG. No one is forcing pros to buy these. Large retailers like Target and Walmart have a HUGE impact on what kind of products get made. Ask any Hasbro toy collector.

Since it wasn't just "1 rare/mythic, plus another possible rare/mythic foil" with set being able to get up to 4. There is functionally no way these could take off to overtake Play boosters, and they are 100% for Big Box stores, though how they plan to package these for there, I dunno.

Not enough of the player base draft for wizards to care about the format. They still "design" sets around draft but it takes almost no effort to create commons and uncommon cards that have a theme in a 30 year old game. We ALL know if wizards could they would only print commander products and monetize the fxck out of arena.

Just a thought but they could be puffing up their numbers for investors. Create a bunch of super cheap products, sell it to the middle man then at annual investors meeting, they can say "Oh yeah we have a +51% in pack and boost box sells this year" which increasing your sold individual products by 51% sounds amazing, a borderline miracle event.

My first thought on reading it was the inclusion of the phrase "select locations". They wouldn't make a high-end product unavailable for WPN member stores. It's probably the big box retailers. You know it better than anyone else: distributors lost millions of dollars in sales from theft and UPC misscans at self checkout. This creates a cheap product that has visibility and market penetration at non-specialty stores, and is not a big deal if they get stolen. Fat packs and collector packs are probably going to get phased out of Walmart and replaced with value and play boosters.

Maybe they signed a contract with a printing company saying they will make x amount of 7 card pack sets a year. But since the aftermath sets failed. they still need to print something. So there solution was put the cheapest cards we can in them and sell them as cheap as we can call them value boosters. Then we save the money from not having to design a mini set!!!

In the food service example, the item or service meets 2 needs, but gives more than 2 options. Here there's another posibility (because ths product is trying to set a floor), where it's there so people dont just leave a store empty handed saying. I don't know which of the two is closer to what will happen. It will depend on how people react to it: - People will go buy packs and end up with the bad cheap one, to not leave empty handed. - No one buys them because people buy packs to get good cards to care about, not trash for trash value. There's no excitement/gamble involved in opening this one (The mid soda) Everyone likes cheaper stuff, but the people getting into magic understand where the value is, just like people getting into Warhammer understand it's an expensive hobbie. If you put the cheap stuff in a cheap bundle, my guess is people wont buy it because they wont be excited for it.

I think these value packs exist for impulse purchases by parents at Walmart when their kids see cute animal characters from Bloomburrow. The kids are meant to look at the art and then a small percentage of them will remember and go down the rabbit hole. For these to be a value to anyone they need to be 2 dollars or less. While I hope Wizards discovered that they have priced people out and this becomes a loss leader or sample pack going forward, I completely expect these to be 3 or 4 dollars which looks like a value next to 5, 6, or 7 dollar play packs

My prediction is that the value booster is going to be about 10 card packs, 1 rare, 2 uncommon, 5 common, and 1 token. About 40 packs per box and they will be color balanced enough that people will want to draft them, but it would require drafting 4 boosters instead of the traditional 3. Then if there is a pack per win it saves the stores money for prize support.

You typically end up with around 40 playable cards (not including basic lands)in your draft pool after all packs are cracked. Play boosters have 15 cards, typically 13 are playable not counting the basic and token. The new “value” packs (Rosewaters used toilet paper cut up & inserted into a shiny mtg pack) will have 7 cards. Broken down as 3 common, 2 uncommon, 1 wildcard, 1 land card or “special guest” there’s no rare slot at all. Though they are advertising you could COULD! Get up to 2 Rares per pack! In the wildcard or special guest slot. To draft these packs, it could and probably will be done by people but you’ll need 6-7 packs to get the card pool = to opening 3 play boosters. Not sure how that will work out from a cost perspective vs buying 3 “play boosters”.. but I feel like you would pay nearly the same money to buy 6-7 value packs to draft as you would buying 3 play boosters.. from a value perspective I’m going to always buy the play booster that has guaranteed rare(s). I don’t know how much these new value packs will cost, but I’m going to assume somewhere in the $2.xx range depending where you buy it. I haven’t bought regular packs in years but I think they are in the $4.xx range each. Not speaking in exact numbers but it’s prob safe to assume that it takes 2 value packs to = 1 play booster for quantity (not quality) of cards (Play = 15 total cards / Value = 7 x 2 packs 14 total cards) so in the end you will pay nearly the same money for 2 packs of literal wrapped shit as you would for 1 play booster that you actually will get at least 1 guaranteed rare in. It’s obvious that this Value product isn’t for us, or anyone that’s played magic seriously for more than 5 minutes. The way I see it, it’s a way to keep mtg product on the shelves of retail stores like Walmart. Problem with these stores is theft is rampant and unchecked. I imagine we will see a shift where the majority of what you see at Walmart will be these value packs and less high end product like collector boxes as a way of mitigating loss. With the rare pull % on value packs not published yet (at least I can’t find it) I imagine it’s low. Hopefully this pure chaff product won’t be overprinted (it will) and dilute the value of the set.

Two reasons: first, big retail shop were probably mad because they didn't have a cheap product to put in scam mystery boxes and the like. Second, they saw the reaction of people not beliving rares and mythic are worth the new price point because there is no longer an over abbundance of common/uncommon, since the draft booster was discontinued.

The sad thing is they have been predatory for a much longer time. I was disgusted at how Commander legends increased the price and claimed you get more rares but when I opened a case of 6 boxes, I noticed a lot of so called "rares" are in every box and in reality, that made them uncommon. I had six copies of so many junk "rares" and only 1 lotus, 1 vamp, 1 manadrain, across 6 boxes of a sealed case. I only got 14 of the dual lands that I needed 20 of for a full play set for 2 headed giant. They are predatory. What they should do is make every box so good that everyone wants to buy 4 boxes to get complete play sets.

Its like the dollar store packs of pokemon but they only had 3 cards to keep them low. At 7 cards in a pack i just can't see where the price can be less than half of the price of a play booster. So in my mind the math is play booster price divided by 2 then subtract another dollar because no guaranteed rare slot. Mind you pokemon also has the segment of people where at 5 years old or so you just must own a stack of pokemon cards regardless of rarity and value because everyone else at school has some.
