I'm 600 ELO, I started play chess barely a moth ago. Once I played a brilliant move. I sacrificed a knight for a forced checkmate. I was super happy, but until I watched this video I didn't know that it had meant much. Now I'm really proud, thanks!

@@NotMeJustborrowedsame here because when I beat a bot, that was 800 elo and before, I was 400, I went into analysis and it said that I played like a 2000 elo player and the next day after, my elo magically went from 400 to 2000 until I lost to many grand masters and stuff.

Brilliant game Anna. First time round I figured out the full combination, second time I figured the first move and the mate that follows if he captures the bishop - but after capturing the knight I only saw 22. Rxd8+ Rxd8 23. Bxd8 winning the piece back and staying a pawn up. Completely missed the skewer. The best move I've played in a competitive game was a rather more modest one, in a rook endgame which invited my opponent to capture a pawn with check. It wasn't forced - he could have declined the pawn and held the draw comfortably - but I guessed that capturing with check would be such an obvious move that he'd play it automatically, and he did. The point of the sac was that his rook had no squares, so he was forced to exchange it - doing so led to a pawn endgame in which I had a passed a-pawn immediately and could create a passed h-pawn a few moves later. There was no way his king could stop two pawns on opposite edges of the board, and I won easily.

I saw the moves but years of calculating tactics helped me. Indeed as below I often win from a lost game! Not so much these days...I once played a combination it took a computer a long time to see. This was against a very strong player (in NZ) and it involved more intuition or position evaluation and some calculation. But I always wanted a combo where I put a N on say e5 and a B on g5 when there was perhaps a pawn on f6....I played through all of Alekhine's games and in one he played a tactic that he said was surprising...it wasn't one he knew. It was obvious that he had made a study of combinations and tactics (some modern players don't so much). You played a great game....I don't always look at the computer....I do for a bit then switch it off so I can study "human moves"......Your game very entertaining as always!!

8:09 2 minutes and I could not find it. You had 2:03 on the clock, so I know I wouldn't have found it in the same game. What I did notice afterwards is, that brilliant move was made possible by black's pieces being in all the wrong spots, particularly c5 and e7, preventing the queen from moving to those defensive positions after taking your knight. Your follow up bishop move after that capture is just brutal. Even in my peak chess playing days back when I was 19, I don't think I could have calculated all that in that amount of time, let alone now. Salut, Anna.

8:16 Bg5!! If Qxg5 Qe6 check and it would eventually be a smothered mate or mate with Qf7. Therefore Qxe5, but then Bf4 skewers the queen to the rook on c7. If Qb6 to avoid the other problems, white can simply play Rxd8 Bxd8 Bxd8 and win a bishop.

Anna, this cow opening of yours is intriguing no doubt, but I must give you fair warning to some of my best moves, #1 as already mentioned, "The Hickory Incursion" which is designed to capture your Queen, then of course, complete surrender. Secondly, I've been working on what I call the "Stonewall Maneuver" which is designed to go after one of your flanks, or if at peak level, both your flanks. Either way, the Cow opening is vulnerable to my strategy

Just want to say thank you for the content! Love your channel! Quick question for anyone with advice. My wife passed away last year. I have been searching endlessly for hobbies to fill the hours in the day. Until stumbling upon this channel, relearning chess had never crossed my mind. My grandmother attempted to teach me as a child to no avail, but I absolutely love the game and have always wanted to really learn the theory and strategy behind it. I was just wondering if there were any books or videos on chess theory or strategy that anyone would recommend. And also some platforms online or apps that would be good for a beginner. And yes I know learning something complicated and new at 37 is almost impossible, but I do have probably at least 5 hours a day to commit to learning and more on the weekends. So nothing is impossible. Sorry for the long post. Thank you in advance.

Don't do yourself down! At 37, you can definitely get back into it. I recommend Daniel King's Powerplay channel and also Eric Rosen. Daniel is highly charasmatic, with long experience of commentating chess games and it shows. Eric is also a very good commentator, with a calm, relaxed style, and he goes through his own games, and includes material for beginners.

@@djgresearch thank you so much for the tips! The more I have been watching, the more I am fascinated and want to understand the "why" of each move offensively and defensively. I figure I'm obsessive enough, and have more than enough free time to figure it out as long as I put in the effort. Heck before chess I picked up bowling and was able to go from a 62 to a 200 average in about 2 weeks every day at the lanes. So fingers crossed!

What if black moves queen F8? You protect your bishop, and also the check mate. Even if white wants to double check the rook and the king on F7 after the check in E6, you can take the knight with the queen and exchange queens. I think the possition is still better for white, but you don’t loose any piece. What do you think??
