In a 1995 game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and Minnesota Vikings, Steelers head coach Bill Cowher was so upset with referee Gordon McCarter for a penalty called on a Fuad Reveiz field goal, that it led to what might be the greatest coaching meltdown and coaching outburst of all-time. I had never heard about this moment until I made a highlight from this game for my channel. Truly amazing that not only did Cowher not get ejected, but that the refs ended up being suspended. Seems like if that happened today, the NFL would just issue a statement the following week saying "whoops our bad we'll try and do better next time". And of course we have this gay ass Vikings fan who can't admit that his team got a free break. He's only worried that Cowher was upset. The official was unharmed & later apologized for fucking up. He felt bad and later did apologize to the Steelers. The bigger thing is that it was a botched call, not that Bill Cowher got upset. If Cowher didn't get upset, there'd be something wrong with him.

Refs have WAY TOO MUCH control over games even to this day. Literally to today. Oct 11, 2020.... refs took away 2TDs from the giants and gave the game to the cowgirls. There is never punishment for them blowing calls or just flat helping teams. This video being the exception to that. I've never seen rers fined and didn't even know this happened until I saw this video. I'm a steelers fan too. Dunno how I didn't know about this. Players get fined all the time for stuff. And at my job if I "completely miss something" or fuck up anywhere near as bad as refs do, I'd be in trouble if not just fired.... Refs need penalized and fined every time they make a wrong call...... Maybe then they'll start getting their shit right........

I have autism but I remember certain things you would never understand! That referee crew was a corrupt crew! This was the first Steelers game I ever went to and I was sitting up high! When I heard our first penalty, the first thing I said was oh no not Gordon McCarter! Whenever he would do a Steelers game, I would cringe! I mean who would know the full name and recognize his voice from high up the stadium if they didn’t have a point!

Trash coach? He was a 1 and 2 seed 6 times ( 4 were 1 seeds) and only one of the 1 seeds were with Ben. Tomlin has always had Ben and has never been a 1 seed and a 2 seed only twice. Remember this like it was yesterday and I'm glad Cowher reacted like that and I don't care if he apologized or not and told his daughters he was wrong for PR reasons. The refs are paid to be professional too and do their jobs properly and not give free points to certain teams. I know the refs can't go back on their decisions but they do deserve and ear full when they royally screw up.

idk its a slimpery slope. I mean there was no review process at this point. If you allow a coach to bring you evidence between plays it opens a can of worms. Does a coach next bring you a picture showing a guy was tackled an inch or two back? or that a player was held on a play? Im a steelers fan, but if there isn't a set review process then its hard to blame the officials for not reviewing it.

One of the things I remember about this moment, that wasn't mentioned was when the announcers were talking about the team discipline from Cowher. It's kind of an important part to what happened as well. When the call came the players went and lined up on the sideline. All 11 of them. Cowher counted there were 11. He trusted his players and had the photo sent down, because he knew if 11 lined up that means there were only 11 out there.

I saw this game live and remember thinking at the time that the NFL would come down hard on Cowher, but wondering if anything would happen with the officials. At that time, the NFL had no provisions for ejecting anyone other than players (unlike the NCAA, which does). Although this has technically changed, the preference is still to not eject coaching staff and handle it administratively after the fact. Also, Gordon McCarter and Ben Montgomery (the line judge who called the penalty) were not actually suspended, but they were fined their game checks for the incident, and if memory serves correctly, did not get any playoff games.

Interestingly enough, despite that blunder of a game, despite Cowher was on the right side of that moment, he and his team moved on and keep on majoritily the winning way route and on their way to the Super Bowl that same season, although they would be defeated in the end. Imagine if the Steelers had won that SB title, that would indeed had put that tirade of an incident to rest.

I remember this back when Peyton Manning showed it off when he was talking about the history of the NFL and mentioned how photography was introduced into the NFL and how it became useful and he showed it being used with this as an example. This reminds me of Refs back in the 70s where they made a mistake with counting the number of downs and an entire officiating crew was suspended for costing a team a down. This information was given by former Steeler radio broadcaster Jack Flemming. But in Cowher's case only 2 officials were suspended and fined. If it were me I would have suspended those officials for a lot longer period of time like 4 or 5 games because of how crucial being able to count is.

Possibly better? Idk. I grew up with Tomlin and have always loved his mentality and how he deals with the media. Both great coaches. However, I could see myself play for Cowher more than Tomlin. Idk why, but it’s just how I feel for some weird reason. Now if it was between Belichick or Cowher, 100% Cowher with no hesitation since many regard Belichick as the GOAT

Cowher knew how to use a ball control offense to milk the clock. His teams were always at or near the top in time of possession. Tomlin is a good coach, but you knew when Cowher was up at halftime, the game was in hand.

There's always going to be blown calls and unless it is the last play of the game, it is what separates champions numerous times to non champions. You have to move on and most do but a team like Pittsburgh couldn't because there coach isn't level headed. So they were going to lose anyway but used this as an excuse for playing awful. It was only 3 points and you had a half time to regroup, STOP!!!
