It's extremely hard to judge players that you never saw play, but I think this list is hard to argue with. Until this last Worlds, I have always said Kenny was the GOAT. But Paul changed my mind this year. I'm glad he got Stevie up on the list, too. He was crushing pros when he was a teenager and he's still playing at a high level in his early 40s. This list was well thought out R.M. should be proud of his work. I'm super lucky to have seen and played with 4 of these guys in tournament play. My biggest claim to fame was holding the tee box for the first 7 holes against Ken, Stevie, and Johnny Lissaman on a 3rd round lead card back in '96. (That I was the course designer has NO bearing on that........hardly.)

Definitely agree putting Ricky above Feldberg And Schultz. He is currently the world #1 and this is easily the hardest the competition has ever been. @gtownwr The stroke margin between the two of them is tiny, head to head stats are equal since 2017, and Ricky is currently been ranking higher in all above sources I’ve cited. Majors aren’t what make you rank higher statistically, but they are big deals, with harder fields; obviously they are more difficult to take down. Because of that, I think McBeth is the best player of this time, but Ricky is currently on top in rankings.

Good list. I agree with the 1 and 2 spot for the reason you stated. It was nice to see Will Schusterick on that list. I remember when he was winning everything but Worlds. Super nice guy in person. I remember getting a disc golfer magazine back in the day with Will Schusterick on the cover, I think he was ranked #1 at the time, and inside was a small section with the players to look out for. One of them was a shaggy teenager named Paul McBeth and he was ranked somewhere near 18th...

Yeah, totally agree! Will Schusterick should be a name that the younger generations know! Unfortunately with the internet, especially the way modern DG is attached at the hip to the internet/content facts and accomplishments are covered up or swayed by personal opinions/debates or “content” that is only being put out for the views/likes as a source for income. Will is definitely one of the modern games greats, as well as Nikko! Once again, looking from a far with a non-bias/non-internet swayed opinion, Nikko is totally being screwed by this “Modern internet based DG industry” people don’t understand the psychology of emotional manipulation, in its entirety is a form a mind control. If you got mad when I said Nikko is being screwed by the internet, I challenge you to research “emotional manipulation using modern technology”

It would be players like Paul McBeth, and Ricky Wysocki as well that as far as major title victories, points, earnings will either give Climo a run for his money, or possibly even exceed past Climo’s accomplishments. Truly, the only outstanding achievement that will takes years, decades to outdo would be Climo’s 12 World Titles. McBeth has won 6. I believe he is currently the closest to that potential..I root for McBeth all the time, each year. I like his sportsmanship, dedication and devotion to the sport of disc golf. It is incredible how he gives back and has done so much for the disc golf community. He’s very hard on himself though when he falls short to victories/doesn’t play his best. So many changes to the sport, so it's really impossible to tell how some of the Legacy guys would stand up today. Honestly, I feel like I could shoot -10 consistently on a lot of courses they used in the 70s-90s, but we have such better technology now and way more discs to play with, so that's not really fair. I’m not the biggest McBeth fan (just as im not the biggest ovechkin/crosby/gretzky/mcdavid and messi/maradona/ronaldo fan in hockey/football) but he’s defenitely the #1 player/figure to do it and I praise him for his success. Being a fan is about being enthusiastic and supporting of someones existence, style and persona. Most importantly, many discgolfers seems to believe that being the best version of yourself is what matters the most (more than being deemed #1), which creates a super supportive environment in the sport that is fantastic to see! This will create even more fantastic discgolfers, when more players on tour simultaneously can reach greatness-status! :)

Fun video and topic. This is something probably most of us are giving a thought from time to time. Personally I don't think titles are that relevant. Consistency (points divided with elite series participations) and rating (compared to others in that era) are more relevant. World titles can't be used as measurement by it self. It's a solo event! Between Paul and Ricky I would say that Ricky is the better thrower and has more tools. But Ricky also makes more unforced mistakes, which has cost him many titles. Also don't forget that a win by one stroke does not mean you are the better disc golfer even though you won the title. But if you consistently win titles with at least a couple of strokes each time it would mean that you can predict a probable win even next time. In that case a title is worth more. It's really typical that titles are used as a measure of greatness. In many other sports world titles depend on who has the most points at the end of a season. Also it's weird to compare active players with players from a distant era. Materials, course designs, rules, competition and skill develop over the years. I think it's safe to say that none pre millennium top golfer would stand a chance against an active top golfer if you wouldn't change anything on them. Anything else is just speculation.

Great video! I'd only swap Climo and Wysocki for the same reason McBeth beats Climo. Frankly, I doubt Climo in his prime could hang with McBeth and Wysocki, and the only reason McBeth or Wysocki don't have better stats in some areas than Climo, the only reason neither of those two totally dominated the 2010s the same way Climo dominated, is because Paul & Ricky had to battle against each other, the two greatest disc golfers of all time.
@jamalydude
@jamalydude Жыл бұрын
For sure. I think Climo has more accolades, but skill wise Ricky definitely would win more out of 100. Ricky just happens to play in the same era as Paul. Much like the Jazz to the Bulls in the 90s
@joeblow2426
@joeblow2426 Жыл бұрын
And Climo had to compete against Barry Shultz, Ron Russell, and Scott Stokley. It’s not like he had no one to challenge him. Barry is over 50 and currently a 1022 rated player. I think he would easily be a top 5 player if he was a young man today. Paul and Ricky had greater skill sets than Ken, but they also had better and more disc choices to work with. Ken was generally more consistent and made less errors than Ricky and Paul do, though he played on less challenging courses, but with less consistent discs (In the 1990s your disk could hit a tree and suddenly it was substantially less stable than it has the throw before.) He was the hallmark of consistency. Although less consistent than Ken, Paul has had some amazingly low rounds (-18!). So, while fun to argue, it is really hard to make a determination about who is best without a level playing field. It is easy to determine that Paul has mostly bested Ricky, but much harder to say Paul or Ricky is better than Ken.
@danday9697
@danday9697 Жыл бұрын
It's tough. I don't think he'd be top 10 in today's game. So you need to have a line where accolades outweigh skill. I have no doubt that Ricky, eagle, and Calvin would beat him most if not all events, but you can't put those guys ahead of him

Yet they would be irrelevant in Climo's time. Climo was the best with the tools he was given and nobody has even come close. Paul and Ricky have better technology, and the pool only seems better because of recency bias and nobody is currently doing what climo did back then.

I don't agree with the abstract argument that it's harder to win now. It is true that there are MORE players, but more players doesn't mean more top contender players. In the modern era it's no question that Paul and Ricky are the 2 best players, oftentimes if one of them is on lead card final round, but the other isn't, they will win that tournament. It was just like that in Climo's time, except he was dealing with Barry and Ron, in both eras there were top 32 players that could come out and win a tournament on a given day, but Climo remained mistake-free and dominant. I also want to add MY OWN abstract argument and say that if Climo hadn't experienced his Career-ending hip injury, he would have 3 more World titles, maybe a couple USDGC, and some more European open titles as well, some of which may be some of the titles Paul currently owns. I like Paul and I don't want to diminish his career I just think there's a lot of recency (and coverage) bias with him.

Climo versus McBeth. That's a tough one. It's like Jordan versus Lebron. The disc golf game is different now. The discs have changed, the competition is better now, the money/prizes have gone up. Climo won many worlds by double digits stokes. He coasted because 2nd place wasn't even close. Don't be so quick to say those championships don't count as much because the competition wasn't like it is today. Maybe, I actually think it would be quite the opposite. I don't think he'd be a top 20, maybe not top 50 Player. I'd think he'd compete in the woods but would get destroyed in open golf. Normally i think legends would still be a legend in all eras, but disc golf has changed quite massively in that time. People are throwing forehands further than his backhand. What used to be a good putt is now routine. Courses are harder. You almost need a forehand in today's game with exceptions to some courses. He wouldn't sniff top 10

Great segment. And though ranking the greats of all time has to be difficult, your criteria does make sense. Except for order of the top 2. Paul is by far the most fierce competitor of his time for sure. But he still is only halfway there to just tying Ken. Based on how you ranked Paul ahead of Ken, when Paul retires someone playing the generation following him could accrue half of Paul's # of titles and be ranked(all-time) higher than Paul. If the field continued to grow and players kept getting better after Paul retires would you then rank someone with half of Paul's titles higher than Paul? Just my opinion. Nonetheless, really good content and effort spent making this segment.
@mickleTpickle
@mickleTpickle Жыл бұрын
Pretty flawed logic because you’re only considering worlds. He even states Paul has 17 majors while ken has 18, but he values more recent majors and dominance higher. If you think worlds is all that matters, of course Ken is number one and that will never change. But dominating a sport in its infancy will always be (fairly or not) considered lesser than dominating today. That’s why basketball GOAT conversations these days are just MJ vs LBJ, while leaving out those who dominated their era like Wilt, Kareem, Russell, Magic, Bird, Dr J, etc.
@Chubbydippin
@Chubbydippin Жыл бұрын
@@mickleTpickle Maybe so. And if so, it wouldn't be the only flaw I've had or been accused of having. That being said, I think it's in both the name/word itself and what it represents. Winning at "Worlds" is to me the pinnacle of accomplishment. "Best in the world." Or maybe as this obsession with the abbreviation of everything will soon refer to it as, "BIW". Doing what he did with 'inferiorly' flying discs and fewer competitors at the time, somehow lessens his achievements in the eyes of so many it seems. Ken's contemporaries and the technology of the time weren't of his choosing nor something he could control. It was how it was then. Side note, it is odd how it's called the "World Series" in baseball, yet only teams from the MLB are competing in it. Either way, it's always going to be a highly contested and slippery slope to rank all time greats of different era's in any sport. Context and #'s, at odds once again.

Simon is good, but until recently he hasn't been the kind of threat the other players on the list have been. Historically Simon is streaky, but it's looking like his new mentality could put him into the scary good category in a year or two.

I need someone's help explaining to me the breakdown for Elite Series wins, National Tour Wins and DGPT Wins. I would like to really know where Paul and Ricky stand head to head. I can't really fully grasp how they count them. Super appreciative to anyone willing to run the numbers and cite where they got these numbers. This is what I have based on the PDGA wins profile for each player. NT/ES: Paul has 25 and Ricky has 23 Not sure if these include DGPT wins or not as they have them listed as NT or ES.

Not a fan of Nikko's behavior but I do agree he should be on the list. Hate him or love him, YOU can't beat him at DG. I've watched him play in person and he's up there with the best. Sadly, his temper is his downfall, not his game. Simon should be on the list, too or at least on a near future list. :)

Is it impossible to compare performance from different eras? Eg, scores on similar courses, or even individual holes? How much does evolving disc technology make this impossible? And are courses today just too different from those in the 90's or 00's, say? Just curious.
@spencerclemens7555
@spencerclemens7555 Жыл бұрын
Not to take anything away from players in the 90's, they just played what was in front of them. But if disc golfers now played the courses that they played in the 90's, eighteen unders would be a common occurrence. It's hard to even compare the two eras.

Overall cash winnings is hard to credibly calculate, there was so much less prize money in the 90's combined with the fact it has to be corrected for comparable value to todays money, to make any comparison. Climo's 8 yr. 90'-98' sting is a feat

if you put Paul and Ken at their peak (not sure Paul has even reached that)... I think Paul beats him more times that not. No disrespect to Ken but the game changes the courses change and Paul is just the next gen. Now if a few years we will start to see these current next gen players taking the crown from Paul. They has a long road to match his career but I do see these kids that grew up on disc golf eventually winning. Paul's body will eventually be the limiting factor age catches all of us.

Agree wholeheartedly. What kills me is some new fans think a peak Ken vs. a peak Paul means Paul wins every single time. I think he wins more for sure, but people think because the talent pool was smaller that these older players weren't good. That's just not correct. Ken was born to throw and putt, just like Paul. Best of both generations hands down no debating imo

It's good to realize the differences in generations. It's like putting Wayne Gretzky in today's NHL. He wouldn't have had half the career he had, because the entire game has changed. He was far and away the best of his time period, but there are tons of players that eclipse his skill set nowadays.

What era of equipment will they be using? People seem to forget the huge differences. In the 90s you only had base plastic and your bomber disc was a 6 speed. You also putted on 10 or if lucky 12 chain baskets. Yes. The game has changed but the big change was equipment not talent.
@getlostinit3D

@@joshhill5932 Good points but you also didn't have 1200 ft holes aka the ball golf style courses. The pars also change with the equipment making the courses harder. Its a hard thing to compare due to so many variables.

I appreciate all the hard work that went into this list, the one thing that bugs me is these lists seem to begin with a narrative in mind and doesn't align well with Majors or Worlds won. In the PGA they would never limit someone based on the field because they had their challenges too, like equipment, number of courses to play, similar to the PDGA. Tiger Woods with better equipment, fitness and nutrition has not been able to surpass Jack Nicklaus who same as Climo was from a different Era. The PGA would never dare to downplay Jack's place as the GOAT of Golf, Tiger knows it, the World knows it and respects it. Now if we have built our sport on golf then we should hold the records held by our Champions in higher regard. Paul is great, no doubt about it, same as I'd say Tiger Woods is great but Tiger is #2 and Jack Nicklaus is #1. Disc Golf should be compared to Golf because it is the same format, one player against the field, past basketball champions should not be the comparison basketball is a team sport, football is a team sport.

Seriously, Hellmuth has been at the top in poker since THE LATE EIGHTIES and he's still Top Ten even OVER THIRTY-FIVE YEARS into his career!

Between 2013 and 2015 McBeth won 10 majors. At the same time of in Kenny's career there was only one major every year. If Ken had the opportunity to compete in 4 or 5 majors every year during his prime he would be a 40 time major winner. Kenny is #1

Love this video! But Ken's accomplishments were more impressive than Paul's. A much more meaningful comparison would be between Ken Climo and Michael Jordan. Paul (at this stage in his career at least) is much more of a Lebron - some people call them the greatest, but in the bigger picture,... not really. Paul still needs 3-5 more years of dominance and brand success to get into the GOAT conversation IMHO
