The original plan, as formulated by the Marines, had a recon team of six operators (Marine Recon). But, when the mission went to the SEALs, they elected to only send four men. Also, strangely, the SEAL team opted to go into the mission with one of the least powered communication radios available to them: MBITR AN/PRC-148. The 148 is low in power, as compared to the heavier AN/PRC-117, which the SEALs opted against. Trapped in the gulch where they were ambushed, the 148 would have been useless as the signal would have not gotten out of the terrain. The satellite phone they had as back-up had a similar disadvantage due to satellite coverage in the terrain. Typically, special operations communications doctrine calls for four separate methods of communication in an operation (Primary, Alternate, Contingency, Emergency, or "PACE"). The AN/PRC-117 would have been a good "primary" in this terrain. While tragic, it is important that lessons from the errors made in this mission go to improve future tactics and techniques so that these incidents can be mitigated, or altogether avoided.

Decent analysis; The 82 mm M-1937 Soviet mortars weighs over 120 lbs and has a range of approx 300 meters, it take 3 men to operate effectively. The JEM is also the lightest and smallest and combat proven, crypto modernization program & certified by NSA to protect the confidentiality of voice and data. Also PACE exists for a specific mission or task, not a specific unit, because the plan must consider both intra /inter-unit sharing of information.

Operation "Red Wings" was a Marine Corps operation where Phase 1 (recon) and Phase 2 (direct action) were to be performed by Task Force Blue (ST 10 and SDVT) since the air assets from Task Force Brown (160th SOAR) were SOF (SOF doctrine required this type of SOF involvement if their air assets were to be used). After action reports and post-operation intelligence revealed that - opposed to early, mostly exaggerated reports - the SEALs faced no more than 10 fighters at the time of the ambush. However, their positional advantage over the SEALs (high ground) greatly multiplied the enemy combat power and gave the appearance of more enemy. Mostly unknown to the public (but already released to the media) the infiltration helicopters erroneously dropped the fast rope at the infil site after the SEALs descended. This is a common procedure during direct action missions, but may have actually given away the presence of the SEAL team by morning. Better communication between the SEALs and the aviators could have prevented this. It is likely that - in the dark and with the noise - the SEALs had no idea this huge piece of equipment was left behind in the open.
@eliot19707 жыл бұрын
Juan Perez good point. People often also don't know that the original insertion point was where the helicopter was shot down. The muj. (Not taliban) were waiting for them . Luttrell clearly states in his book that the team were aware of the dropped rope and made an attempt ( obviously failed) to hide it. It was the rope. Not the shepherds he loves blaming that have them away.

Intel on the area by Marine units assigned to that AOR, Navy analysis of the video released by the Taliban after the firefight, and interview transcript of Afghan who saved Marcus. So, a few things. That, and the FBI agent (former SEAL) originally assigned to Task Force Blue for that rotation (they were there to handle the counter-drug SSE tasks during SOF operations) was later assigned to our unit in SE AFG, so he had insight.

Im from Ireland [Dublin] and I must say I have maximum respect for these Navy Seals I have been reading a lot about them and I think they do American proud. I have a heavy heart knowing those guys died. but It took over 50 Taliban to take out three Seals. Now that is some going very impressive. I wonder if there are many seals with Irish blood? I would love to know

All of you ignorant, lying, *filthy*, *reeking* hypocrites make my blood boil. Don't you *dare* use the word freedom. You say that you respect these fallen soldiers while you just disrespected to no end the countless innocent people, including women and children, killed unjustly in cold blood by claiming it was in defense of your freedom. What a disgusting, lying, stinking creature you are. Sure, proclaim the actions of your beloved troops as in defense of *your nation's interests*, but you have absolutely no right to claim anything that they or your nation does is in the name of freedom, human rights, and justice. Your nation and your soldiers have NOTHING to do with any of that. Your nations' absolute refusal to lift a finger to help prevent the massive civilian slaughter and rape in Syria proves more than ever before that there is no actual goal of protecting justice and freedom, and you don't give two craps about human rights despite what your leaders used as context for their invasions. That your governments' claims of protecting "freedom" around the world is a complete farce should really be pretty damn clear by now, even to the least intelligent halfwit on the planet. At least have the decency to admit and be honest about something that is clear and plain as the bloody sun. And yes, I and every decent human being would be more than willing to defend and die for their land and people in the face of a real threat. Not everyone is a corrupt, foul smelling hypocrite and lying coward like yourself.
